View Full Version : The Definative 2008 Glasgow Easter Egg Run Thread

:riding:SV Ecosse:riding:
WILL meet up at the PC World (Finneston) car park (same place as last year) BUT from 10:00am for an 10:30am departure down the road to the SECC car park parade assembly point due to the following.
Due to the large number of people attending the run these days there is too many for Yorkhill to cope with. The first 3,000 to arrive at our SECC assembly point will be allowed to finish the run at Yorkhill whilst everyone else will need to follow the marshals back to the SECC.
PLEASE NOTE: The early meeting and transfer to the assembly point is intended to get us into the first bunch of bikes and, perhaps more importantly- to allow us a reasonably smooth run through the city. Those engines don't like being starved of air flow! Besides which it's a great opportunity to get as many shiny SVs through the red lights at a decent & sensible speed whilst the cars are held back by :plod:.
Note also that the route has been changed because of the Clydeside Expressway changes etc. Visit http://glasgoweggrun.mag-uk.org/Route.php for details and then pop "back" to their homepage for other info. I'll be posting details of our group meet on their site as I did last year.
***EDIT*** - it's not easy to follow particularly quickly especially if you're not local. Easy enough, just follow the masses.
I HAVE MADE THIS MAP (http://www.independentphoto.co.uk/media/sv650/2008EggRunRoute.jpg) WHICH YOU CAN ACCESS AND PRINT DIRECTLY.
Post your intent to attend below and I'll add names to this first post as they tumble in.......

Add my name in Garry :) !
I can offer a pillion space to anyone who is bike-less for whatever reason (KK I'll give you first refusal, perhaps someone else can offer as well and between us we'll manage you and the wee one).
If anywhere kind of between Harthill and Glasgow I can pick up, if not I'll pick up from the centre of Glasgow, ie: Bus or train stations, etc.
Offer open to any SV Ecosse friends or family. Sorry, don't want to offer this on the MAG website as I don't fancy carrying a complete stranger, you never know if you'll get someone whose never been on pillion.

As long as you're not in the first mad dash, it's not usually tight riding... We usually end up about halway down, which helps to reduce the stop/start stuff. You'll be fine ;)

I'm confused Garry - I love my Kwak IL4. The blade - still waiting on a good day for testing again - was too frosty the day I was out. The Duke - not test rode one mate(848?) I've had a shot of a 1098 - didn't like it at all. Far to wee for me and my hands kept banging the front fairings. Yuk

Didn't have the "5 Mobile phone adaptors" a couple of years ago when I bought it, but I rather suspect it would work crap anyway. It looks like this (http://www.lidl.co.uk/uk/home.nsf/pages/c.o.20080320.p.Intercom_Set.ar11) that they're advertising again this year.....

Well, it's snowing a wee bit but not lying at all, hopefully it'll be fine tomorrow. I've pointed a hose at my bike for the first time in 3 months so it better stay nice!
We don't seem to have an easties meet-up... So, what I'll do is, I'll quickly swing by the Maybury services (Shell station) at 9-ish, but I won't be hanging about, and I'll do the same at Harthill whenever I pass there (about 9.30), if anyone wants to meet up then be there or there then or then :smt023
But, if you're waiting there and I don't show up, don't be too shocked, I am very lazy and I won't be going if the weather isn't decent.

Yep, I was popping in and out of neutral and coasting wherever i could to save my clutch and my hand. Think Jullyburd was right not to ride in that when she's only been on the bike twice. I wonder if they intended to have an everyone at once free-for-all getting out of the SECC car park!
northwind
24-03-08, 07:34 PM
It reminded me of an old-style running Le Mans start- huge line of bikes all turning onto a tiny tiny road. Did you see how many never even made it out of the SECC perimeter road? I saw a Rocket 3 and an older japanese sports bike which had obviously boiled over or otherwise sprung a fluid leak, Gav Hogg mentioned that one of the Scooby Doos binned it on the roundabout, about 10 bikes were left in the car parks because they couldn't get them to start...
At least mine only stopped working in minor ways  (the horns didn't work because the earth wasn't plugged in, who'd have thought it)

A mass crazy free for all start it was!! Tis the best way to do it. No doubt the health 'n' safety zealots will put an end to it for next year, and ruin the fun..
It was a slow run - I just filtered past everybody by hook or crook till I got near the front. Only to find out the lead copper bike and marshalls were doing 15mph:confused::confused: No wonder the run was going that slow and leading to bottlenecks.. A few of the people I spoke to at the end of the run were complaining too about the pace of the run... Remember when the entire route was closed down in both directions so the bikes could get opened up to stop the overheating???? That was the fun times.:thumleft::thumleft:
Another point - cars on the main road on the gt western road indicating to turn right against the flow of the bikes. Didn't the halfwits know this run was on, and they'd have to wait the best part of an hour to get into the junction as no biker was going to stop for them??? Why didn't the police on foot patrol move them on???

Hahahahahahaha - the first pic in that Suzuki Owners club string of pictures, with the two lone SVs sticking out from all the rest......that's Beaniebike's and mine.....
My mate Stuart (who helps organise the run) told us to put them exactly there so that we could guarantee getting back to SECC in time for me to get changed to gig....... felt somewhat conspicuous getting ready to go in front of those thousands of bikes honking horns and revving engines......I was so relieved when I got on the bike, thumbed the starter and it started.....:D

I think they've actually almost taken the health and safety too far.....so much so that it's become a different health and safety concern!!!
I'll also hold my hand up and say part of my day job is actually health and safety manager at an electronics company -now erring on the side of caution is one thing, but this run was taken to new levels, which I suspect could have become unsafe.
The coordination of other traffic by the police seemed poorly done this year in comparison to the last 7 years worth of runs I've been on.
My average speed (near the front was about) 8 mph......peaking at one point only at 19mph (I then had to slam on the anchors mind you!!!). Never got above second gear (and was rarely even in that) and top temp I saw on my bike was 107 C (but I have full fairings).
I hope they can sort some of this for next year, or I may just take a break from it next year to see how it pans out - would be a shame as my son, who came pillion this year for the first time ever, really enjoyed himself!!!

Hahahahahahaha - the first pic in that Suzuki Owners club string of pictures, with the two lone SVs sticking out from all the rest......that's Beaniebike's and mine.....
I saw those two before the start, took a wee photo... I thought I recognised the twin cans on Beaniebike's black 650 :smt023

Glad we were further back then. My average was quite slow - didn't check since I was too busy making noise and waving etc, but the peak was WAY above that on Gt Western Rd & Dumbarton Rd:cool:

OK folks......
......the good news is that I've figured out a way of extracting my video from the camera and onto the PC or anything else without giving in to some robbing French mob who want paying for a codec.
The picture and sound from the on-bike footage is rock solid :riding:. All I need to do now is make something out of it!
I'll get something posted at some before next Easter!
