Hello!
I'm currently just a pillion (to rubberduckofdeath) but I am hoping to complete my CBT course and DAS test this year. I spent the best part of £1k getting leathers, lid etc so I could ride safely with him (he wouldn't let me on the back until I was well protected!) so now I feel i'm ready to bite the bullet and take the test myself.
I've always been interested in bikes and now I have protective gear and enjoy the thrill of riding as pillion, I really want to ride myself.
Any advice / tips to get me started would be most appreciated!
Thanks!
Cat :)

Welcome!
My advice is to go out and practise using the clutch on his GSXR1000 he's got there. It wont hurt you, promise :smt066
Na, seriuosly - riding bikes is a completly differant experiance to riding pillion; you'll have much more respect for how much work goes into riding even if you decide that after the CBT riding really isnt for you and your happy being a pillion!
My girlfreind maria (miss alpinestarhero) has been expressing wishes to learn to ride...anyone got a CG125 we can borrow :D

My theory test book turned up today, so i'm going to get reading tonight. I want to try and do my CBT in April so I need to get some money together soon so I can think about bike shopping!! I'm open to suggestions, but i'm only 5' 2" :( Limits me a little but i'm not letting it put me off!!

Do you mean bike shopping for a full power bike (in anticipation of a stunning test pass ) or a learner legal 125?
Have you decided where you are going to do your CBT?
I did mine at Ridesure (http://www.ridesuretraining.co.uk/) which is based in Dunsfold. There's loads of space to practice before you go on the road which I really liked.
Hi :)
An SV has already been proven to be fine for 5'2"
If you don't need a bike for transport, just fun, don't waste your time buying a 125, just go straight to the SV.
So are we going to see you tonight?
missrubberduckofdeath
03-03-08, 03:52 PM
I'm not sure where i'll do it yet. I guess i'll decide when i'm ready to book. As for the bike, I want to do a Direct Access test so I don't have to be restricted to 125cc but not sure if i should do the test straight after the CBT or get a 125 to learn on...hmmm.
I know which would be more sensible, but who likes sensible!!
Ridesure +1 for CBT & big  Riding the Top Gear track & they let me loose on a 500cc for my CBT :D

Thanks Stu. Yeah i'd love an SV and it's really been the height thing that's made me consider other options but if you say it'll be ok i'll take your word for it! I should really go and sit on a few and see how they feel. I'm getting VERY excited right now!!
So what's tonight?!
More sensible would be straight to DAS, IMO

Yup, on my CBT I remember my instructor explaining countersteering to me over the intercom thingy as I was riding round Hammerhead:cool:
Practiced my U-turns outside the TopGear studio.

Tonight.
SV's are easily lowered - don't put up with a standasrd one.
You can sit on mine if you like, plus you can get a scooped out seat to lower it even further than mine.

Well, restricted to 33bhp dosnt mean the end of fun; I have had many good times on my restricted SV :D the 125cc might make the training and test a litte easier for you, then just get an SV and go ride and get used to managing a big bike in your own time, without the pressure of a test to prepare for :D

+1 and defo get in before the test changes.
After October (or whenever it is) the closest test centres will be Newbury and Burgess Hill I think. The one in Farnborough(?) isn't opening until later (next year I think).

Truth be said your height won't limit things too much, there are plenty of ways getting around it. Samnooshka here on the forum is about that height and she managed to do it by modifying her SV somewhat. This being SV forum of course I'd recommend a SV650, probably a naked model as it changes your riding position and makes it easier to put your leg down. There other options like the ducati monster & an old 400. Both of those you need to buy very very carefully. I am sure Mr. WubberDuckieOfDeath would help.
My girlfreind maria (miss alpinestarhero) has been expressing wishes to learn to ride...anyone got a CG125 we can borrow :D
Matt, There is a place in west byfleet that let's you do something called an induction course for £40. It's basically 2hr on a 125 around a car park, doing some exercises that are actually done in a CBT. PM if you want the details.

Helooo and welcome! Good to see you on here!
i am too a pillion at the mo but looking to take my test soon. Prob April/May! Phil bought me a bike for xmas, a 125. Some Japanese version of a Honday CG a Quingi or something!!! Managed to ride it a little yesterday - a bit wobbly but never the less, both feet off the ground and moving forward!!!
We also have a SV650 - that will be mine when I pass and have some confidence to ride. yep 3 bikes, two cars and no garage!!!
So will we be seeing you at AR08? - I am going as a pillion, but I reckon Phil may kick me off at some point so he can go faster without being deafend!
I may need a lift if anyone fancies having a pillion!??
Anyway - Hope you are ok and welcome to the crazy org!

i have found pointies taller but law really is vertically challenged (in the nicest possible way of course) all good things come in small packages (well I hope so if Lees nude pic is anything to go by) lol
my raptor is about the lowest bike you can ride without going down the cruiser route

Yes I know I'm short. I found out today at the MOT that my headlight aim was too high due to it being lowered. Been blinding people all this time!
Hi MissRDOD:D
Another pillion here, but one who plans to stay as one. You think 5' 2" is short, try being 4' 10":D Not tall enough to ride anything fun enough, so quite happy to just stay on the back:cool:

I can't remember the last time i sat on our Raptor, but I got long legs so never had a problem with most standard set ups, til I got my black bike that came with jack up kit installed. I could still put my feet down...on the balls... but made me feel a little unsafe, so ripped em out, and got some OEM ones off dirtydog
I thiink the only bike I've not got my feet down flat on was a Triumph Trident Sprinty thing, but that belong to a 6ft2 geezer
i was balls of my feet on sv. sat on DDs daytona and could not reach the ground with either foot. just reached the pegs. my legs are 27" short though.
raptor is both feet down and I LOVE IT

As i say i'm not exactly tall at about 5'8" ish and i got a fair few cramps the first time i rode it which was only 75 miles!! A 650 raptor might be the way to go if you don't fit onb an SV same engine after all
