I remember many moons ago seeing a table with recommended gearing for all the major circuits in the UK. I can't seem to find it now - anyone have any idea where I might get one?

Sorry no :(
But out of intrest, are you going to buy a combination of sprockets then?
I have two combinations I use ... 14 44 and ... er ... 14 45 ... i.e. I have a standard SV and an SVS rear sprocket and swap them over depending on where I am at!! :smt036 I could do with more 'range' than that, but I am too tight to buy more sporckets and as I am only trackdaying ... what is the point in trying to gear perfectly? ;)
What odd combinations. I thought the idea of terack racing is top speed. If so, then why would you want to knock some off your top end wehn fitting a 14t front?

Is it?!!? ... if so, why don't I put a 16t sprocket on!! ;)

Sometimes it is better for a lap to have more acceleration between corners to get to the next one than getting up to top speed on straight. Somewhere like Snetterton, your gonna want top speed, but maybe somewhere like...Oulton, few more turns not as long-a straights(Okay probably not much difference in the two tracks lol). Just my opinion on it all, possibly the standard on an SV suits all tracks, but I suppose if you find your not hitting anywhere close to SV top speed on longest straight (which in theory you should) you opt to utilise the opportunity of a bit more acceleration. Thats the way I'dve thought it worked.

You have to gear for maximum drive from the corners and also you need to have the gear changes in the right places as best as you can.
I always ran:
15-45 on the minitwin at Snett
15-44 on the tuned SV at Snett
14-45 on the minitwin and tuned bike at Brands
14-46 on both at Pembrey
15-45 on the tuned bike at Cadwell
14-44 on the Minitwin at Cadwell

Exactly, at Cadwell in an Austin 7 it's better to use ratios from a Nippy gearbox than a close ration set, as 3rd gear in a Nippy box is ideal for Coppice in VSCC racing, but I digress...

I'm going to Donnington at the end of the month, and think the 15/46 arrangement I've got at the moment may well be geared too high...

Id certainly look at 15-45 for Donny.

That high eh, I may well stick with what I've got then.
Cheers!

Donny is a FAST track, I think you will be fine with 15/46
At Brands last weekend I was using 14-44 on my minitwin bike. Worked out almost exactly right, only just shy of the red line in top down the main straight.
Here are the ratios of the various gearing combinations:
15/44 = 0.340 (Stock Gearing)
15/45 = 0.333
15/46 = 0.326
14/44 = 0.318
14/45 = 0.311
14/46 = 0.304
The lower the number the more acceleration but the less top speed.

Since when will an SV rev out in top gear anyway?

It does with a 14t on and if you tuck in 8)
Mine revvs out about 1/2 way down the backstraight at Silverstone!! :( ... I am also pretty much on the limiter in top driving hard on the exit of/through Abbey!!

Fair point, but I doubt there's much actual top speed difference in it terms of lap time and drive between/in corners

Yep, if you over gear the bike for the track, it'd never be able to achieve top speed before you hit the brakes .. so you gear it accordingly to get the acceleration and gear change advantages that does, quite a lot of laptime can be lost down a straight, if you under gear, but you might be able to steal this back and more elsewhere, therefore what you choose to do 8)
Gearing can make a difference to your lap times. The extra acceleration is not a small amount. If you gear to nearly max out the revs in top at the end of the fastest part of the circuit then you are getting the most acceleration while not losing out on top end by hitting the rev limiter early. Sometimes gearing so you max out in top a bit early might give you so much more in other parts of the circuit that its worth losing 5 mph top end on others at the end of the straight. Conversely it might be better to over gear slightly to reduce gear changes in other parts of the circuit. Each gear change can cost upto a quarter of a second.

Ive just done my first track day for years at Llandow in wales ,Its short a bit like lyden but flat ,I bought my brothers minitwin for the track ,I have a 2008 R1 for the road .
I managed to run with in a second of my brothers time but could not get the right gear for the chicane 2nd is to snatch y and 3rd has no grunt ,at the moment its 45 at the back ,I was thinking of going to a 46 to perk up 3rd ,there is no problem top speed as its to short to get into 6th.
any advise would be great ,also Im running EBC prolite race discs and EBC HH pads but found there binding ,I have stripped cleaned dust seals in calipers ,red grease etc,I found if you crack off the caliper bolts the wheel spins freely and when I torque them up there binding ,will they need shimming ?

I know this is an old thread but just wanted to comment about the gearing. I used 15-45 the other week at snet as advised. It was way too low, ended up working my way up to 16-44 by the end of the weekend. I was sitting up by the end of the straight trying to keep it from revving out too much.
Anyone got any thoughts?
Cheers, jay.

14/47 works for me at Cadwell.
