View Full Version : Using Both Lanes

Imagine if you will that you're in your car, not on the bike. As on the bike the question is irrelevant.
So you come upto one of those short dual-cariageway sections, where it's 2 lanes for about quarter of a mile. The left lane is full of lots of people doing their british thing of queueing (crawling at 1 mph) as it goes back to 1 lane and then there's traffic lights a little after (which is what' causing it), the right lane is mostly empty.

If i was in a car, I'd prob sit in the elft hand lane. Why shoot down the right hand lane, only to not be let in at the other end?
But i dont have a car, I use a bike. So i'll go down the right hand lane then carry on filtering when it goes back into one lane

Or was there a question?

Depends, if they're all queueing behind a Micra that's doing 20mph and the speed limit is, say, 40, I'd probably overtake them all.
I drive a tank... people move out of my way.

the one I have in mind is only a 40mph section, so it's like one of those sections which are to ease the traffic into anyway, thus freeing up surrounding areas.

Use the right hand lane, thats what its there for!:smt102

I gun my car down the outside and find a place to slip in as the road merges, I don't see the point in staying in line, you pay for the road use all of it, besides I just saved time. I normally drive fast anyway. I having driving a small car recently, forgot how much fun it is throwing them into corners and roundabouts.

I usually do. But had the missus in the car this morning and got the daggers, so just wondered whether it was me being an agressive driver.
These traffic lights are designed for traffic zip merge after the lights. This means that more cars get through the traffic light on each cycle, meaning less congestion.
The "think" campaign needs to be expanded to "keep left on motorways", "Zip merging is not a crime" etc and might reduce the icidence of numptyism on the roads - then we might actually all get somewhere.
The other issue about this is.... if you are the guy in the outside lane, should you be expected to set off 'smartly' to get ahead, so that the guy in the left lane can make normal progress when the lights change....

Ah ok, in that scenario I'd definitely use the right-hand lane. To me that's not being aggressive, it's just using all of the available road space, and by doing it you're stopping the queue from getting even longer.
We British do love a good queue though don't we?

I would blast down the empty lane of course.
However if i was in the left lane, i wouldn't let you in. ;)
Its one of those things, I have about 6 of these on my journery to work. Every day you are gauranteed to see some fairly aggressive road rage at these spots.
You have the people in the right hand lane who will try and get as far ahead as possible, the type who push and push, they are in the right hand lane inches from the car infront and would rather hit someone than let somebody who waited in the left hand lane to get infront of them.
You have the people in the left hand land who deliberately dont let the people in the right hand lane in, and try everything to stop them, even when the people in the right hand lane are acting fairly.
Then you have the people that do it fairly in both lane, they allow 1 car in from each lane when it closes down to one again.
I judge these points when i get to them now, if the traffic is at a complete standstill and no one is in the right hand lane, I will use it thats whats its there for. If its moving at a decent pace i will normally stay in line.
The arguements and road rage you get at these point is unbelievable, I swear some people go out of their way to get into an arguement at these places.
I just sit back and let people get on with it.

No, the single file comes after the dual-carriage, so Single > Dual > single > lights > single.

LMAO Totally the same. Which made me question my double standards, and they are fine!

I go in the 2nd lane... it's called making progress.
This is also the cause of road works making delays longer!
It's been proven that if everyone went right up to the delay using both lanes, and everyone filtered in, in turn, then it would reduce holds up by a large amount!

If we're honest with ourselves then i'm sure we all were. :smt045
I use the free bit of road, usually, thats what its for.
On my way home, on four wheels, theres a slip road onto a dual carriageway that then rolls down a bank to a fairly major roundabout.
Theres always a queue on the two lanes to the roundabout. Its the same principal:
a) shoot to the very end of the sliproad and force your way in, or
b) politely queue as soon as you get past the chevrons to the slip, with plenty of empty road in front. Let in immediately.
I tend to queue, purely because it causes less hassle with people who force you onto the hard shoulder / crash barrier rather than let you in.
I know which bunch you lot are! I then of course refuse to yield to those who go to the end of the slip, on principle.

i think if you're on the bike then its every man for himself, but if you're in the car then you have to be more polite. I make a point of not letting 'queue-jumpers' in, but i am overly competitive. :)
I would blast down the empty lane of course.
However if i was in the left lane, i wouldn't let you in. ;)
The Mrs is exactly like that!!
For me, I'd go down the right lane (sticking to the speed limit obviously) then tuck back into the left lane where safe.
If I'm in the left lane, and people are being sensible, they can happily go infront of me. It saves stress, and doesn't loose much time comparatively.
However, we have a similar setup near me, Dual > Single (over a bridge) > Dual. You always get numpties coming flying down the right lane & trying to push in last second. If I judge that their overtake will put me (and any passengers) in danger, then I'll happily straddle both lanes to block them before they're even alongside!
However, on the bike, I'm down the right & over the hash markings.
I make a point of not letting 'queue-jumpers' in, but i am overly competitive. :)
Depends how each individual defines "Queue jumpers"
Two lanes with a merging zone... = not queue jumping in my eyes.
But some people think it is...
Near me you have one lane for turn right, two lanes for straight ahead; there is always a queue for straight ahead. people go down the 'turn right' lanes then cut into the 'straight ahead' lane. thats queue jumping and I don't let them in :smt019
On the bike all this never seems to be an issue somehow :smt077...
I think Baph's method works best!
I would blast down the empty lane of course.
However if i was in the left lane, i wouldn't let you in. ;)
:winner:
And if no one let me in the queue at the end, I would stop and slowly edge my car slightly in between two cars to force my way in. ;)

It comes down to lane displine, bad driving winds me up as it casues accidents, well its true.
The amount of people I ask when was the last time you read the highway code, you know some people I don't have think even read it, sad I know but I have the up to date one which I read, so I know what I'm talking about.
Honestly never read the highway code :( lol
I did the theory test... I read it alot.
Same as you can use any side of the road unless marked or in the face of oncoming traffic...

i just leave enough space that if i get a silly bugger like you i can nip in front of the car in front of you
that really grinds their gears, especially when you thank the guy in front with a cheery wave;)

I would go in the right-hand lane and then re-join. In a nice way of course..by indicating and re-joining safely. Not by barging your way in and almost scraping another car in the process (stupid boy-racer did that to me the other day, I was not pleased)

if there are 2 lanes then use them, whats the point of having 2 lanes and only using the left lane

I have a Micra, it never pootles along at 20, unless it's a 20 limit.

Absolutely. Trouble is, you get the idiots in the left lane who won't let traffic merge from the right lane.
But what if i was in the left hand lane and you were in the right?
A crash probably!

If the left lane is empty, go up the inside of them (watching for plod naturally).
Generally scares the bejebus out of them as they think they're in control of the whole motorway.
