View Full Version : Which earphones for riding?
Hi,
I love listening to music as I ride, and I've been using the same old MP3 player forever, but now the earphones have fallen apart and I need a replacement. Most of the ones you can get now are the sort that actually stick in your ear, and I was wondering does anyone have experience of how comfy these are in a helmet?
Thanks.
Thanks those look good, they don't go all the way in the ear canal which is what I wasn't sure about. Lots of good reviews too, I'll give those a try, cheers :)
I wear Panasonic Clip-On Spiral Earphones (Model RP-HS9) but they are rather hard to get hold of now, its because I just don't get on with the in-ear type. The just fall out, or hurt rather a lot, so these are good due to there thin design. Can rub the top of your ear on long journey's, but its much better the ear pain I got.

Can use them with earplugs
Personally I take them out of their foam padding & insert them behind the lining of the helmet - can't feel them at all but hear them fine.
Hi Stu, those look good, never seen any earphones specifically designed for bike helmets before. I've ordered some others now, but still I'll take those off your hands for ?15 if you still have them? PM sent anyways :)

I'm tempted by a pair of Denon C100s, I believe that's the name. About £150.

At that price I would go for custom earplugs with inbuilt headphones (not that I get on with customs)
If you want to spend 10% of that & few pence on earplugs I have plenty more helmet speakers. pm replied Larry :)

I listen to music with headphones while I sleep, whenever I ride, it works out that I use headphones about 12 hours of the day on average, so I tend to allot a higher budget to them :D They're in-ear type, a bit of noise cancelling so I can have it down a bit quieter and still hear over the wind, whilst being able to hear traffic better as well. I might have to go for some of those helmet speakers when I'm back on the road though, I love anything that has some sort of jack on the end of it.

No probs :)
I usually have them on me :)
I have tried may a earphone< most of the above. However, the best fitting and most comfortable where my Sony Ericsson ear phones. You see, they are slightly curved so fit the shape of the ear really well, and are the plug type and have a 3.5mm jack but a short lead as they are meant to plug into the hands free part of the kit.

I did asdas headphones: 69p remove the head strap so its just the speakers, and they sloted in to my arai perfectly, double sided carpet tape to hold them in place, and was far better than any headphones I'd previously tried.

If you happen to have a sony ericsson of some kind the in-in-ear (the ones that sit in the ear canal) headphones work brilliantly. They block out road and wind noise and the sound is really clear. What's more is that you can't feel them when you're wearing them. Couldn't recommend them enough.

I think you will find those are EX71's
Try the seinheisers - exactly the same effect, only better :)

The sony earphones stay in your ear far better than anything else. Trouble is my girlfriend is annoyed that I nicked the earphones for her mobile!

Wow! I didnt realise everyone seems to ride with music on!
Would you recommend this to new riders or would it be too distracting?
I currently ride with plugs wedged firmly in and cant hear too much of anything. I have suffered with v.bad ear ache due to wind noise and was considering getting a whisper kit for my Shoei to cut the wind noise but suddenly music might be an option!

My Sennheiser CX300s (£39, Currys), broke at the jack and I got some crappy ones until my mum found the receipt (yay) and I have to say, I missed those earphones more than pretty much any person I've ever missed.
Got some sony-ericsson that fit in the ear that cut out a lot of external noise. However they have a tendency to move (fall out) at time, which is a pain.
So I have now got some Phillips ones from Carphone Warehouse (£25), these have clip over the ears as well as fitting into the ears. Sound quality is excellent and they remain in the same place even with a tight fitting crash helment. The only drawback is that the Phillips ones don't quite fit as sungly in as the sony-ericsson one (but since sony ones tend to move over time this is not really a major drawback relatively).

Listening to music isn't the safest thing for riding a bike but then like others I still do it! Shame to block out the sound of my v twin though. A whisper kit for the Shoei is a good idea although I found that it doesn't make quite as much of a difference as advertised, I now use mine pretty much all the time.
I bought senn cx300 after reading reviews but like others I found they kept falling out even after changing the size of ear bud rubbish for me, at the moment using stardard ipod headphones. Like the look of those iasus HS92's though Stu, PM sent

i used to listen to music all the time, dont enjoy so much anymore. i also found that my riding started to mirror the music i was listening to... prodigy and rage against the machine got banned after the first couple of times filtering at silly speeds!

on the advice of this thread I got some CX300s for my birthday, they are cracking, good enough to use as earplugs (for short trips at least) without music but fantastic fit and sound great even at speed. very impressed.
I was told earlier this year whilst taking my CBT that listening to music was illegal as its likely to block the sound of emergency vehicles, is this correct? Wouldnt mind something to block a bit of noise, i have a shoei lid with whisper strip, most noise is coming from the visor.

Better tell cage manufacturers to stop putting radios and cd players in cars then eh?
Hadn't heard about it being illegal and can't imagine it is. It may not be the best idea but I don't think its much worse than just my ear plugs.
if you don't currently use earplugs I'd advise trying some of them first to get used to the sensory reduction but entirely up to you, from the earlier thread it seems a popular idea heh :)

I had some shure E2c headphones which i used to ride with and they were great till i caught the cord on a kitchen draw handle and knackered them. £60 down the pan :(
Then i found some by a company called ultimate ears and they are completely modular. So if you break a bit you can replace them, and also if you rip the wire out you can just plug them back together.
Not ridden with them yet but they are top class for canceling out everything on planes and noisy people in offices :) oh and they give a really good quality sound.

The sony ones are great - The best versions are the ones for Sony Erricsson phones as they are quite flat and therefore dont get pulled out as easily as the others. In addition they are also cheaper if you buy them from ebay.
Note - you will also need to buy an extension cord as the earphone pieces from the phone plug into the microphone piece and are therefore only long enough to reach your chest!
Hi all, a quick bump to let you know of some bargains that are available from play.com at the moment:
Shure SE110 Sound Isolating Earphones £17.99 reduced from £70
http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronics/4-/3497721/Shure-SE110-Sound-Isolating-Earphones/Product.html
Goldring GX200 with comply foam tips £17.99 reduced from £50
http://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronics/4-/3440287/Goldring-GX200-Hi-Fi-Stereo-Earphones/Product.html
I went for the Goldrings which turned up today because of the foam tips you get included as well at the silicone tips. The foam tips you squeeze and then allow them to expand in your ear so they create a tight seal which I think will be ideal on the bike. Won't get a chance to try em out on the bike til the weekend though.
