View Full Version : What should I do to pretty up my trackday fairings?
Just bought some pretty rough fairings off ebay (back door-reserve wasn't met!) and I want to paint them up for the track just to make the bike look a bit nicer for those physics defying photos I'm gonna get from Silverstone. It's a black Daytona 675 and the fairings are black but pretty badly scraped. I thought I'd give them a good rub down and fill if needed and a quick blow over with matt or satin paint.
What do the org's people think?

Yeah go for it, I did that for the last couple of years on a temporary set of bodywork I was only going to use for 1 meeting ! ;)
Its somehow satisfying to beat the crap out of some nice shiny Ducati on a scruffy looking rat bike :smt045

How dare you! I don't want it to look like a scruffy rat bike! I've got an old tranny outside for that.
Got any piccies?
:)
P.S. I'll be lucky if I get passed the restricted SV boys coming on the trackday. :(

Matt black, applied with a stick. And some duct tape for good measure

Got any pics of the damage Darren?
I'll have a better look tomorrow and take some. I don't know if I could call it damage but they certainly haven't been looked after. They might clean up ok. Like I say they're added cash protection for the track. The rear plastic has a whole rubbed through it though which I'm going to try and sort. Don't think I could get any shiny paint good enough.

Matt Black hammerite applied with an idiots hand!! **I'm an available idiot for a small fee!!**
Gloss white  White bikes always looks cool on the track.
Although black and white vehicles are supposed to be a real pain to take photos due to focusing etc.
Put the bike in the garage, mask off the tyres then drop a stick of dynamite into a tin of magnolia and run.....

Eh? How does that work - surely areas of high contrast (and it doesn't get more contrasty than black and white!) would make auto-magical focusing work even easier!
From wikipedia:
"Contrast measurement is achieved by measuring contrast within a sensor field, through the lens. The intensity difference between adjacent pixels of the sensor naturally increases with correct image focus. The optical system can thereby be adjusted until the maximum contrast is detected. This is a common method in video cameras and consumer-level digital cameras that lack shutters. In this method, AF does not involve actual distance measurement at all."
Anyway, geek lesson aside, I would go with a predominantly white bike with black and red detailing. For example:

Obviously not copying these designs, but I think the combination of colours is pretty tasteful and timeless :)
Cheers fellas. Jester I've got TWO idiot hands for free! If I need a third then I've got a coppers jar somewhere.
I've cleaned them up tonight and they're not that bad at all. The rear plastic bit has been down the road a few times though. Gonna try and repair that in time. Oh, and the seller neglected to say that he'd cut chunks out of them to fit sliders.
Reckon I'll just get some stickers to whack on it to make the bike stick out in trackday pics. Hmmmmn.
What stickers though? Suggest something. I've considered a big Union Jack on either side but doubt I'd get one the right size.

Nah... forget the union jack, how about just some small triumph stickers and the 675 daytona markings as seen on this years 675???
NO WAY! I've got the 2007 and think the latest decals are fugly.
Maybe just a big Triumph.
Right then, how about this? Or a variation. I only have the faring lower from under the headlights down and the rear piece to play with. I though I could do it with this decal:

DOn't critisise the artwork, I done it paint and I want to SCRREEEEAAAMM!!

Yeah I like that, but try to do it less KTM-y... I'd suggest black and red rather than orange
I did notice the similarity. I wanted something with a good contrast. It took me so long in paint. I really wanted to hit something by the time I was done. Some of it was done pixel by pixel but after I'd saved it I tried to change the colours and there were speckles all over it again!
Think the logo could be angled a bit more clockwise. Looks a bit bent to me, like a sort of optical illusion.
Will carry on playing.
What about these babies?

I like the black and blue, might nick that scheme for my CBR6
That's gonna look stooopid with Triumph written on it!
Do it, do it.
Wouldn't it be funny if we both turned up with the same paint jobs!

You should have handed the job off to the GIMP
No, I dont mean Bear in a mask.
This GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/), the GNU Image Manipulation Program.
Basically a free program, almost as powerful as Photoshop, and most of the stuff it doesn't do is not really useful to the average home bodger.
And the price is right two.
Now comes in Linux, Windows and OSX flavours, all consistant with each other (so you only have to learn how to use it once)

A few cc's perhaps ;), but no that's not it .
Cheers Mark.

Isn't that the old triumph logo? </anorak>
Spot on Dan! Mark PMd me. Must pay more attention.
After Mark's PM I'm thinking a matt or satin orangey red with the correct logo and having it angled a bit more as in the later pics.
WIll download that Soulkiss thanks. Was downloading a Photoshop trial last night and due to the missus using my computer to download all of the latest series of Skins, one episode twice, I ran out of room on the main partition! Sorted now though. No more Skins! He he.

Logo on the tank is Red? as well as what Dan said
Isn't this all tempting fate? As in: The more you do the more likely you are to crash and spoil it!
Personally the red/black version gets my vote.

Nicely spotted Saeed but it isn't on the later ones. Mine is gold I think but that won't be changing. I'll have to play with the new logo and try and do it to look more realistic. What do you think Devil?

I'm probably going to redo some spare plastic for trackdays... I'm as yet undecided whether to make a hi-viz jacket bike or a pink bike
