My new one* arrived this morning :D ...I now have a pathological need to attack something with a cut-off disc- anything will do, as long as I can hear that little motor scream, feel the disc slicing through and smell burning stuff.

I'm off to the garage, I may be some time.

the discs shatter with alarming regularity, i've yet to have one embed itself in the soft flesh of my arm but i've no doubt it'll happen one day...

Great little bits of kit, but yes the cutting discs can break easy. Don't try to cut any fork legs!!

I know about discs shattering, this is my third Dremel. I've been using them for nearly 20 years.

Thanks for the warnings though, appreciated.

They were clearing those out of B&Q a while back, I got one at the time... That wee clickwheel thing's clever eh? Then you see how much the replacement discs are :( If you've not had the flexi-drive before (I hadn't) read the run-in instructions, if you don't do it right you end up with all the grease in the wrong place, very annoying. Er, or so I hear, not that I'd do a fool thing like ignore the instructions.

Seems a very good price for what you get, sure it's the older model dremel but it's just as good as far as I can tell.

You're supposed to run it dremel-up, tip down for a few minutes- gets some heat into it and distributes the grease. You can actually hear and feel it happening, which is kind of cool, the speed rises over the time perior and at first it heats up in some places, by the end it loses the hotspots. But the main downer if you do it wrong like I did is that loads of grease runs into the chuck part and makes a terrible mess.

I did nearly get a bit of shattered disk in the eye. Which reminds me I need more cutting discs. Got me out of some fixes has the old dremel, and into a few as well. Very useful for cutting a slot in a cheese allen bolt ;)

It must be just me then. I can't see the purpose of a dremmel.

You need these cutting discs, they don't shatter

Been using this type for a few years and never broken one yet. They do go blunt eventually, but last a lot longer than the stone type.

I make stuff like little brackets for the race bikes, and modify fairings etc, There's also the number of rusty old heaps I sometimes need to cut exhaust nuts off to save studs when working on them. My Dremel is one of the most over-used pieces of equipment I have to hand.

For that sort of stuff, I have a selection of grinders, die grinders, air chisels, air hacksaws, sanders, polishers etc. I have never seen the point of a small jack of all master of non type tool

That's all very well if you have a second van to take all that lot to a race track with you....I don't. One Dremel that I can fit in my toolchest does nicely. in my garage there's a huge variety of power tools for different purposes, but the Dremel more often than not gets used in preference to others because it is so versatile.

Timwilky does make a valid point, but then my Dremel cost ?40 and came with an assortment of tools, that's not going to buy an awful lot of air tools. Or a compressor for that matter  I do have a compressor btw but for most people all of the different tools + compressor + decent line (since you don't want a rubbish one underfoot if you're using it a lot) doesn't make a lot of sense for the amount it gets used.

But ?40 for a Dremel, well, that's not a lot to pay but very handy when (for example) Scooby Drew brings the Rust Ninja over and you end up having to slot a fairing bolt to remove it, and then you need to cut a suspension bolt off, and there's no space for a grinder (really that was a reciprocating saw job to be honest, but my brother thoughtlessly took his back)

On the subject of air tools, I think I used my air ratchet twice, just can't be bothered with it- I've stuck a socket adaptor into a cordless drill instead, it's almost as effective and doesn't have hte hassle of the hose.
