I'm looking at buying a bike. Problem is, one possibility is declared SORN and is miles away from me. To purchase tax you need an insurance document, and V5 and somethings?
...This would mean purchasing the bike and insurance but leaving it at its current location (which i dont want to risk) until i recieve all insurance documents, then getting tax, then spending more time and petrol for a second trip to go and get the bike.
Is there any exceptions to tax laws in this situation? I dont really want to risk not having tax on the road incase of an accident etc. but i dont want to make two trips.
Anyone got any tips?

Hire a van/trailer.
Not got any mates with access to a van? If not most van places will do a 4 hour rental for about 20 quid.

I have been considering...not sure if its worth the hassle andmoney...looks like it'll have to be 2 trips or risk it. I'm happy to risk it tbh, but theres always that thought in the back of your head. GAY!

Get the current owner to tax it?
Yep +1, most will do it at cost. If insured of course.
You could give a company like this a call.

I think i may be able to do it....
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/DG_10034732
although my name, address and vehicle changes wont be updated at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency....
...just called dvla tax person and they said it cant be done, so its gonna have to be recovery truck, 2 trips, orrrrr take the risk...which is vry tempting:smt077
It will take 3 days for your tax disc to come through. Get the insurance co to send you the documents and go up then. You have 14 days to cancel with no penalty anyway. So if you go and see the bike and its a dog, then you come home, and cancel the insurance. Then get the bike MOT'd a taxed localy. Ask the vendor if this is possible.

My details have to be updated on the MID and Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency database (V5 attached change to driver/address form) for tax to be processed. I think i'm fighting a loosing battle. Have to make two trips...
Called motorcycle recovery (SOS) and they quoted 200 quid, cus its a fair distance...sod that [-X

Or see if the seller will give you the V5 in exchange for a cash deposit or a cheque, so you can get a insurance cover note and tax the bike, then pay the balance on collecting the bike or collect 4 days later when the cheque clears. You have less to loose if he pretends not to know you when you go to collect it.
You could also ask for proof he's selling from his own address, if he's honest he'll be happy to provide it. Then you shouldn't have much bother. If you pay by cheque and get a reciept so there's an audit trail to show the police, the guy is not likely to do the nasty on you if you can tell the police who he is and where he lives.

good advice, thanks ralph. think thats probably the best route...
i'm fairly content the seller is legit etc. still always best to be safer than sorry!

Not if you go to the post office and buy the tax using the documents on paper.
TBH it really Blows. You ought to be able to collect a Sorn Vehicle then Tax it retrospectively from the date of purchase when your insurance docs come through -
Not that that helps you any...
Edit: Sorry about that - just got unreasonably irritated on your behalf...where did I leave the pills....

There IS a legal way around this problem.
As Sosha said the only exemption on the usual tax / MOT law is if u are riding to a pre-arranged MOT.
So here is what u do.
Book an MOT with a garage near where u live that u don't need to visit again any time soon. Go and view the bike on the morning of the day u have booked the MOT - if u like it buy it and ride it home. If plod stops u, say i'm just on my way to a pre-arranged MOT and give him the details of the garage. If you don't get stopped, take the bike straight home, don't bother with the MOT and get it taxed and tested at your lesiure.
A bit dishonest and u won't be welcome at the bike shop for a while, but a way to ride a sorn bike without risking a big fine.

Do you still need insurance for that though?
Every time I've bought a bike, I've been insured to ride it before MOT'ing it.

Yep you still need insurance.
Another issue is that you are allowed to ride it to get a MOT, however its meant to be within a reasonable distance/close to the start location. I'm sure there is further clarificaion than my loosely worded definition.
If you ride half way up/down the country, then that sure as hell will not fly and you will be rightly prosecuted.
On a brigher note i appear to have sobered up...yay for me.

haha sosha, it is highly irritating and a slight ballache. TBH if i was gonna sell a bike id have it taxed, its off putting having to sort all this out :-s sell it much easier...
Good idea New Leaf! I like it ;)
however the bikes on an 06 plate less than 2 years old...
I'm gonna go look at some showrooms today to see what i can find, may bump into something.
Thanks for everyones input:thumleft:

They are local to you and shoul be cheaper that the London based lot.
Get a quote / insurance from ebike, download and print your certificate, go collect v5 and mot from seller, go post office and give them the right amount of cash, they will swap that for a tax disc then you can ride home,
Whats so hard about that???

Didnt know you could get certificates on the net, thought you had to get them posted. Will look into it!:)

Depends on the post office, some are a bit funny about home-printed certificates.
Make sure if you're going to do it that you print it on a colour laser on good quality paper, then it will look official.
Where do you need to get it from/to ?

If i manage to buy it, west yorkshire to crewe....
but I think leaving a deposit, getting V5 and insurance sorted, and then picking it up a week later is the best idea atm...:smt026

Having thought about this some more - wouldn't it take a while for a cheque to clear anyway? - Have bought a Bike before where I gave the guy a deposit - (he gave me the reg docs & a receipt) & I've picked it up a couple of days later. Plus the wait means you don't feel obligated to buy it when you show up.
Oh and have another.... :smt026
