In Helmet audio

Ok so i know people oin here are split, so please no... "its far to dangerous to ride with headphones" type of comments.... cheers

As im planning on a few long distance rides and faced with a boring commute i wanted Jazz up my ride with a bit of audio.. now i looked at auto coms etc etc but then i would need a water proof Mp3 player or a decent MP3 phone, neither of which i had... and it was looking expensive..

However..

I stumbled across an H20 audio Ipod shuffle waterproof case, it goes on an armband and is garanteed to 10m fully submerged depth.. (more than enough for a spot of rain, and i was bought one along with the nano for my b day) which was on the 12th btw for all yo lot that missed it :p

All the controls are operable with gloves and it sits neatly on your arm, i bought some in helmet speakers from ebay £25 and low and behold.. In helmet audio!

Iv not tested it biking yet, but the volume is ace so far albiet my Roof helmet isnt ideal for the speakers as it sits too close to the ears to be comfortable, so ill go shopping tommorrow for a new helmet that is better.... I wanted a everyday use type not too worried if i drop it helmet and Nitros are right up my street... and cheap too, kittens had 2 and they have been really good... any way.. heres the pics..

The bits and bobs... the shuffle holds roughly 200 songs.. its a 1 gig.. JUST LOOK AT HOW SMALL IT IS!!! (thats the only time ill ever shout that btw)

The cables fit neatly in the helmet seals and the seperate plug alows the helmet to be disconnected from the jacket when reopmved from the bike!

Careful now, you've asked folk not to warn you about the dangers of headphones, but you forgot to mention that you don't want to hear about how dangerous cheap helmets are either! You're skating on thin ice for getting flamed here! ;)

I don't have anything that fancy, I use my Sony Walkman Phone with a 1GB memory card in it. They are as good as any MP3 player if you ask me and don't have to carry two devices. The rubber in ear earphones seal your ear canal like earplugs, and stay still while putting the lid on and off. You can hear the music at 90mph quite clearly. I just stick the phone in an inside pocket, or in the waterproof map pocket on my tank bag.

I am an audio fan as well :cool:

Only on a 125 scooter for the last few years, now upgraded to a Shoei Multitec which I use with an Itouch........"Waterproofed" by being stuck in me inside pocket - the new lid makes a lotta difference to the audio - I have not gone helmet speakers cos' I figure that the audio is better with the earpieces.......just a bit of a fag when taking the helmet off - but the new flip up is loads easier :cool:

Unsafe with Headphones? Simply B#llocks :smt066.....is it safer without headphones, possibly a bit - but you can make the same argument for / against anything.:viking:

I use earbud type earphones, they block a lot of wind noise too, I think I get less noise in total with them than without. As for dangerous, I can still hear sirens, horns etc. The most dangerous thing about it for me is when you hear motorhead it's quite hard to ride slow :-P

Yup, I'm more than happy playing tunes with the airbox/exhaust. Playing "pop" music on a motorcycle is just asking for trouble. I have know idea/ self control how to manage a powerful moto in a 30-70 controlled zone when "Smack My Bee-atch/Overkill/ Jesus Built My Hotrod" kicks in. And have know wish to find out. I'm only allowed to DRIVE with Sigur-Ros/Mogwai playing. (Journey time ends before I have time to "tan" my wrists/burst into tears needing hugs):(

Ear plugs if i'm out of the 30's though. Keeps you warmer and relaxed-er.:)

I wrote off my first car listening to the Prodigy, over onto its roof. When I pushed the car back over and turned it on the music started straight up, so I understand the whole music/self control issue for some. Now I don't even dare hum whilst riding my bike, and god forbid a whistle.

I listened to music whilst riding for the first few months I was on the road using my sony ericsson standard in-ear headphones. I stopped when I started to find myself concentrating on everything but the road - Oops!! They did their job brilliantly and blocked out a lot of wind noise too. I decided it was better for me, as a completely inexperienced rider, to not listen to music and maybe keep my mind on road instead :P

+1 for in-ear headphones (Fontopia from Sony)

I personally wouldn't want to travel long distances without earplugs as I value my hearing too much. The in-ear headphones block out most of the external wind noise (saving your ears) and allow you to listen to music at the same time.

I personnally think that question of safety and listening to music whilst on a bike depends on the individual. I found that my boring M4 communte was far more dangerous without music as my mind wanders if I have nothing to listen to. On the rare occations where I haven't had music on I always have notably more near misses than when when the music is on. I also find that I go faster without music as I am so bored and want to get home.

As one band (I think Offspring) said "...music soothes even the savage beast."

Music on an old Silverwing (years ago), on a Goldwing (ok, ok, ok, its more a car on 2 wheels but the stereo was good!) but I really don't like headphones, personal choice and all tho.

When I got back into biking about 18 months ago, I had difficulty riding and breathing at the same time.;) After about a year of riding(~8000 miles) and also doing a bikesafe weekend I could ride without having to seriously concentrate on every aspect of it(eg where the direction indicator switch is etc). On reflection I suppose that I should have had to to be retested before being allowed to get onto a 70 bhp bike. Anyway, now I have a Bluetooth Cardo Scala rider FM headset with the earphones in my Shoei Multitech lid. Probably should have gone for earbuds and forgot about the mic set up. Sound quality playing MP3 is pants and wind noise at any speed over about 70mph makes the speaker sound inaudible. Maybe I'll get some of the in ear channel buds to connect to the Zumo and dump the Cardo sometime.:confused:
