View Full Version : New... just wanted to say Ello...
Hello, New to these forums... just wanted to say hello! - and ask some SV questions.... sorry if this is in the wrong catagory, if so can the mods move it? - just I did have some questions related to this bit of the forum
I have a Direct Access booked for this coming week...:-? God I hate tests!!!
I did the sensible thing though... bought an SV650 before hand!
Going to pick it up tomrw morning. (in a van, of course...)
Just wanted to ask a couple of questions...
1) Am I completely mad?
2) What are people's opinions of the '99 sv650? - its naked, art racing can (slip on)
3) Do people think its a good first bike? (I have been on bikes before, but not in uk... just Spain and Thailand)
4) The bike has about 27k miles on it... so long as its been looked after, should I be expecting many more (will go in for service soon as I get it)
5) I want to get some security for the bike... what do people recommend (alarm/immob/locks etc) - I will be riding the bike pretty much every day, and live in Bristol... so security is a good idea I think!
Cheers in advance!
Mike

get a data tool, and alarmed disc lock and a wocking great chain... and good insurance
I have a 99 curvy naked...it's sweet! I think you have chosen agood first bike.
If you are looking for a chain, get an Almax chain.
http://www.almax-security-chains.co.uk/
There are known amongst those in the know as being the best you can buy. If you do decide to buy one, you can get a discount by saying you are on the Visordown forum. I think you get 10%, so it's worth it.
Good luck with the test!
Thanks everyone! - great advice
Cheers for the welcome also!
- One question... whats a Curvey??? - why is it called that? - Sorry for being dumb!!!

it's basically the older model of sv ie. 1999-2002 model. known as this because of it's more curvey styling. whereas the 2003 onwards model has quite a pointy look.
you chose very well in your decision, as curveys are by far the fastest (especially in yellow) and better looking!! ;)

Alas, its not Yellow... its Blue.
Does that make it slower??? :smt017 lol!
Blue is pretty fast, not as quick as black but waaay faster than cowardly yellow *hides*

Ah! thats okay then...
its actually described as blue with gold flex... not got it yet (tomrw... can't wait! lol!) I wonder what the effect the blue flex (flecks i think!) will make on the speed... maybe it will give it more torque???
One more question... whats the s... as in sv650 or sv650s...
Mike
(sorry to sound so dumb... just I have not got it yet, so i am wondering what model it is in fact!!!)
Edit: Here is a piccy of said bike...

The SV650S is the one with the half fairing, yours, being nekkid will just be a SV650.
Post pics when it arrives so we can poke fun at your lawn/garage/whatever else is in the background ;)
Look up... I edited my post. (not my piccy... its from the bloke i am buying it off)

Not bad, ART can, Pyramid Belly Pan, braided hoses and rearsets. Just needs a fender extender and crash bungs by the looks.
His grass needs a cut and look at the state of the borders!

Explain... (sorry:confused:)

Okay... so this is it? http://holeshot.com/images/cache/350x262_5_sv650_k3_front_fender_extender.jpg
It extends the mud guard??? - any practical benfit of this, or is it purely aesthetics?

And how could you see the hoses in that piccy??!!!

It stops water ingress to the front spark plug, probably the most common problem the SV suffers from.

Well it's a crap pic, but the routing doesn't look like the standard hoses and the bars are cheap renthal knock offs.

Hi, welcome to the forum and good luck for your test next week. Congratulations on getting an SV, especially a Curvy!
1) No your not mad!!!
2) Curvy's are the best and any loud pipe will do!!!
3) Yes, the SV will teach you a lot and is relatively safe for newbies (not idiot proof though).
4) 27k miles is no problem for an SV or even a bike of that age, low mileage for age I think personally.
5) Move out of Bristol!!! I wouldn't bother with an immobiliser, bikes get picked up and thrown in to the back of a van here in the UK. An alarm would be better but to be honest how many people take any notice of alarms nowadays? A good chain wrapped through the swingarm and wheel to a solid fixed object is the best thing to do, not 100% secure but a thief may just look to a bike beside yours with no chain on for ease!
Fender Extender for a Curvy ('99-'02 model SV) which you can get from Pyramid Plastics (http://www.pyramid-plastics.co.uk)....
http://www.pyramid-plastics.co.uk/catalog/images/05010.jpg
And for Crash bungs it seems most would opt for Motosliders...

Oh, the ad says they are renthal bars... but maybe they are knock offs...
I will take your advice on the fender extender then! - thanks for the advice mate :-)... now... the important question... what colour to get the fender extender in!

Well in the pictures nothing, Pyramid used the same picture for both products. Basically on is matt black while the other is Carbon Fibre look, which looks terrible.

http://www.kingpin-seo.co.uk/bike/5fd8_1.JPG
No effect on the speed, but as a flex is a plug cable, it may limit your range...
Bonjoir monsewer, wilkommen zu hausen. If anyone tells you I'm a deviant it's only because I didn't ask THEM to sit on my knee...
PJ: Get your own thread dude! :D
