Hi, if you were a pretty new rider, had just bought an sv650 and had to choose a helmet...

My primary concern is obviously safety, but I dont have THAT much cash (after the bike, insurance, DA course etc- all sorting this week).

So, as always I know I will have to compromise.

Just wondered if I could benefit from others experience with this one...

I am looking for a decent level of protection... lightweight as poss.

Full face, and budget is around ?100. Am I being realistic? - oh... and most importantly, it has to be Black!!! :smt026

One that fits your head... a Hundred pound lid that fits you properly is going to give better protection than a five hundred pound Arai that doesnt.

Get down your local bike shop and try a few on and see which fits best etc etc, then have a look on line and try and find a better price.

Personally I dont know what is available for your budget, if you can find a bit more cash then have a look at the Shoei Raid II, always gets good reviews that one does.

GBP90 will get you a Caberg V2 or AGV, or HJC.

Remember to dress for the crash, not for the ride.

HJC if it fits, I got an AC-11 a few years ago for GBP99 and is still going strong, came 2nd in the Ride helmet test a few years ago.

I'm with Tim. I've only had the helmet a few months but my HJC is the most comfortable I've ever tried, although it was GBP140. It's an FG-14, if you're wondering.

Just bought a Shark S800. If it fits your head, I'd recommend it.

But you'll know which one if the right one when you try it on!

Caberg trip, a flip front with integral sun shield. It has a good review from MCM and is right on budget.

Do a bit shopping about you may find one cheaper.

But the point is you can get good quality helmets at this price range if you know the makes to look for, hence this thread I'd imagine. Mike wants to be safe & not spend too much, nothing wrong with that.

Agreed the main thing you tend to be paying for on the top end helments is the rediced weight and improved sound deadening. Im not saying that a helment is a helmet but you should spend as much as you can afford and look for something made by a reputable brand with the features you want.

I paid £159 for my nolan N84 tribal and its layered fiberglass (not just abs) over the foam inners with removable lining and built in sunvisor. Its not the best but its definately fit for purpose. :smt045 I would reccomend the caberg flip fronts too as a mate has one, but dont buy a cheap flip up as i have heard the catches are the weak point. Any lid over £100 by a good brand should do just fine mate.

Exactly!

199.99 got me an Arai. Its their base model, but i am told they are safety tested to a higher standard that most other lids.

You do need to be comfy of course. Caberg Trip should do for that money..... Flip, Retractable sunvisor, black, ACU Gold Sticker.

Just make sure it's a snug fit - take advise from the shop on fit.

I'm not having a go at you or anybody else, but this statement is not correct.

(As you're about to see, this "helmet safety" thing is a real pet-peeve of mine.)

All helmets are tested to the same standard for the market in which they are sold. For us that's ECE22.05. Snell2005 and US DOT are also quite popular standards to pass.

The old sales scare-tactic, "how much is your head worth" is crap. Safety and cost are not related. (This might be the one good thing that's come from gov't legislation in motorcycling.)

Plastic works better than fiberglass for absorbing g-forces on impact. Plastic is softer. It happens to also be cheaper. It is also heavier.

Brands like Arai cost more because these guys spend a lot to make their stiffer and lighter helmets, made of exotic laminate materials, work as well as cheap plastic ones. There's a good deal of independent research out there to support this (google "blowing the lid off").

These more expensive helmets also generally have much better features - better visors, better venting, better comfort. But they don't always, and a cheap helmet may fit, vent, look, and feel just as good as another which costs 2-3-4X as much.

Go with what fits the best, and is safety-tested to the ECE22.05 standard, and meets what your needs are WRT "other features", such as fit, venting, type of chinstrap... whatever. If that's an Arai (they do make a nice helmet; personally I think they're overpriced), then that's fine, you won't be disappointed.

But don't make the mistake of thinking you are safer with a more expensive helmet. You're not. All helmets that meet the safety standard are safe.
