View Full Version : What would you commute on/alternative to SV?
Im considering buying another bike, in opposition to the SV something supermoto/traillie which I could commute the 7 miles to work every day and also to have a bit of local scratching on an evening/weekend. Obviously speed isnt a massive issue, but would like a pretty reliable, cheap ride. Cant see the point in using a car for those short distances, even in winter really as there is an alternative route which is only 3.5 miles! Im even considering pedalling it in warmer weather. DRZ400 is the obvious choice for me (even thought about a DT125 which was my teenage dream!) but would be interested in alternative and leftfield ideas.

Thats what I do. I've been pedalling all through the winter this year as well.
I had similar thoughts some time ago, my Gixer thou although a hooge amount of fun it was a tad frustrating on the 40 mile round trip to work in the rush hour. I also considered a DRZ but ended up with a Yamaha MT-03 to supplememnt the Gixer, sort of taking the best bits of a trail bike, super motard and stuffing it iall into a simple road bike that was not too tall. I'd suggest you may want to try one. Unless you intend to go off road it ticks all the boxes and handles a treat.

SuperDuke. :)
The abysmal tank range should just about cover your commute. ;)

Cub 90 :D Commuting legend. If you kill it, you don't care, just crumple it up and throw it in the wastepaper basket and buy another :winner:

CB500 or CBF500. If they are good enough for couriers, then they are good enough for anyone. Bulletproof engines, frugal MPG and cheap to buy & insure :)

Scooter! 125:D Will easily out accelerate cars and top out at around 75 (although will feel like 120!).......I have a similar commute and am lucky to need to hit 60.
Pro's mainly cos' it keeps yer feet dry  - not to be underated! but also for underseat storage and loads more with a topbox.....and after that you would be surprised what you can carry on a Scooter (all that time in the 3rd world was not completely wasted on me :p) Get one that is as slim as possible for filtering / lane splitting. and riding an automatic is a complete no brainer - IME usueful in the morning!
Downside is with the "scratching" - but as said already 75 feels like 120.....and feeks like 175 when cornering :)
So why am I selling and have an SV on order? Dunno? - just felt like it :flower:
for me (even thought about a DT125 which was my teenage dream!)
DT125 sounds good to me, get them derestricted and they are snarling wheelie machines.

Honda Melody:lol:(sorry i'm not helping am i?)
Scooters arent a bad shout actually as I would expect they'd be pretty cheap to run. Cheap tyres, good economy - 80mpg+? and low insurance & tax.
The DT is tempting, although so is a DRZ or XR400. Ive even looked at KTMs and they seem reasonably priced.

Monkey Bike :) Tempted to get one for the summer, what MPG could I expect? (it may finance itself on fuel savings...). Anyone on here got one? (sorry for the slight derail Rob...).

Peugeot speedfight 100!
Just so happens Ive got one for sale! ;)
But seriously, I dnt fancy a monkey bike for filtering. Small things are harder to see. Ever bumped into a child in a crowd?

Cheap tyres? - dunno, same ones for the last 5 years! (but they are chunky)
80MPG? - dunno, fill it up once a month, now around 7 quid. I think.
Insurance - just over 100 quid. I think.
Servicing? trip to a dealer every few years :)
I got a new Aprillia 125 - looked tatty after 5 minutes and although never broken down has leaked oil for a couple of years.........it's italian I should have known the build quality would be cr#p.......my recomendation is........buy Japanese for the build quality. Honda.
Depending on how I get on with the new SV650, my next bike may well be another Scooter (whatever 100/125 4 stroke that Honda makes). Or a Hayabusa :smt096
Id like a go of a monkey bike but as far as commuting on it, I dont think i'd feel safe plus i'd get endless ribbing off the lads from work for turning up on one.
The scooter idea does however sound quite good. Might see how much the insurance would be on my policy.
