Fancy a blast round the lakes. Coming down from Edinburgh. Thought about the following route. Any good? Any other recommendations? Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Well, that copy/paste didn't work!
The route I thought was:
- Penrith
- Keswick
- A5086 to Calder Bridge
- A595 to Boot, then over Hardknott Pass to Coniston
- round to Newby Bridge
- A592 up the side of Lake Windermere
- Ambleside
- Ullswater
- Penrith
- home
Any good?
Cheers.
Don't know the Lakes area so well but I assume the run from Ed down is via the A7 and you could always do A686 (Hartside - Hexham) back up the A68 :)

I've now binned the Hardnott/Wrynose Pass idea. Sounds like they've got a poor surface and very narrow.
What I'm really looking for is fast, good surfaced road with plenty of scenery.
Traffic doesn't bother me as you can zip past it.
Windermere & Ullswater sound good.
Any other ideas?
Thanks very much.

Don't forget to go from Penrith over Hartside, take the A686 out of town, over the tops, stop for a brew at the cafe, then down to Alston, then you have the pick of the roads back North therough NOrthumberland, perhaps Hexham?

Do you intend doing this all in one day from Edinburgh?

yer over the passes are abit narrow and aint a good surface but ont the more main roads like along windermere and ullswater are alwasy way to busy u would never get a clear run round they can be that busy cars are only movin about 10-15mph but if u are luky u might get a slightly more quite day

Yes, all in one day from Edinburgh.
I planned the route on Microsoft Autoroute and it's 320 miles.
Early start to beat a lot of the traffic. Should have plenty of time.
