Hi guys,
I am new to this site just wondering if any of you can help. I have a 1999 sv650 naked and the ODO-trip reading always seems to be a lot higher than what I actually do. Today i did around 60 miles and the trip counter said 100. It seems as though the reading is in KPH rather than MPH which this Speedo is.
Has anybody else experienced this problem and what did you do????
Any help would be great!
So the speedo is in KMH or MPH?

The speedo is reading in MPH

Possible could be that a previous owner put in a new dial backing for the Speedo so it would read in MPH, unfortunately the ODO will continue to read in KPH.
Do you know if the bike is an import?

As far as i am aware it is a full UK spec bike.
Is there any way i can check if this has been done!

What colour is the speedo dial?
What does it say in the Service history book i.e. dealer that sold the bike originally?
What does it say on the V5?
I wouldn't have thought it is a fault with any of the speedo components as its reading in MPH on the Speedo, do you know if its rough accurate (i.e. if you go through a 30 limit are most of the other vehicles at the same speed in front and behind?). If you are not 100% sure on the Speedo's accuracy you could get a mate to ride/drive in front of you at 30mph and then 50mph and see what your speedo reads!

the speedo seems to be fairly accurate. this is why i am puzzled!
The speedo has a white background same as the Rev counter.
there is no service history other than MOTs with the bike.

White is the OEM colour, I think there must have been some sort of switch done in the past. Keep checking back here in case someone knows exactly what is wrong, bump the thread if it starts getting quiet in a day or two (just write 'bump' in the message box and it will bring it back to the top of the list).

My thoughts are the same as Dangerous. Even if the bike was a UK bike, it's so old it might have had a replacement unit fitted due to failure or accident, and Euro speedos generally tend to be cheaper. Can you take a pic of the speedo face Steve? At least it means your bike has covered less miles than you thought :).................unless the speedo is a replacement.:(

You can get a gadget for converting mph to kph ( Demon Tweeks? )
Has one of these been fitted?

That would affect both though, the only way that makes sense to me is theres a mph face on a set of clocks configured in kph

i will take a picture and post today.
I have looked on the log book and it doesnt say that it is an import anywhere.
it has all of the mots and the recorded milage seems to add up so i dont think that it is a new odo but like som of you guys have suggested it seems asthough the speedo may have been changed at some point. just the unit looks asthough its all one unit which is why it seems wierd to me that the speedo is in mph and the odo is in kph.

You can change the face of the Speedo and Rev Counter easily, it may be that at some point the speedo died or got damaged and a previous owner made the face swap with a KMH unit instead.

Thanks for the help at least the mileage isn’t as high as I originally believed anyway!

This would change both the Speedo and the ODO at the same time.

Yeap, my mistake but going by his discription of what is happening it was obvious that it was swapped.

went out today and glanced down at the thank!
the warning is in ITALIAN...... hadn't even looked at it before!!
must have been a parallel import in 1999.
do you think that site will do a conversion for the odo??

Perhaps you know Eyetalian and hadn't realised.
Why bother with converting. Just do the maths in your head. All the servicing is in Kms anyway. :D

Yeah, I'm sure they could help. Give them an email and tell them that you have had your KMH Speedo converted at some point but the ODO has not been converted, might cost a bit less. It seems that you have to send the clocks to them though!
