Hi all,
I have made the custom tail tidy with the template from this site. I have been out today (not the first time since its been on) and when i have pulled over and walked round the back of my bike, my number plate has been bent right under the tail of the bike and a perfect arch of a tyre ripped out the bottom of my plate.
Has anyone else had any problems of this sort.
Gutted now as the plate is knackered and the new reflectors i put on have gone and my MOT is on tuesday.
Ive had to cancel the mot and order a plate from MAL Plates.
Going to have to have a re think about the angle and hight of the plate me thinks.:smt076

Yeah its usually good to make sure the tyre isnt going to hit anything, remember the suspension does compress a fair way.

When I made mine, I made it so the number plate was in the middle of where it said on the template. As soon as I offered it up I realised it was far too close to the back wheel. Luckily I had enough material left to make another one. On the second one I just drew a line by eye where I thought the number plate should be, and now it's fine.

+1 i made it so it comes 90 degrees off marking on the temp so its about 6" clear of the tyre

Sorry being thick, did you also find the template put the number plate in the wrong place and have to make a second one?

no, i couldn't remember where i put the plate bracket on the undertray, i think i did the same as you but cant think
-> Wideboy & Shifter
what did you cut the under tray from??? (where did you get it???)
Shifter, great job, what's that exhaust? Did the high level link pipe come with it?
Cheers

Looks like a Blue Flame (http://www.blueflameperformance.com/) exhaust to me....

The zorst is a blue flame, it came with the link pipe, bracket and spacers for the pegs, in fact everything you need. I only got it last week and i got it direct from blue flame, on special offer for ?272 delivered. I am well chuffed with it!:D
The ally I got from a sheet metal place, they did me a sheet big enough to make 3 under trays for a tenner! Much better than paying ?100 for a piece of plastic:)

Forgot to add, Lots of gratitude to wideboy who put up with me PMing him a lot with questions on making these, anything you need to know, he's ya man!

I don't suppose you've got the remaining two??

As I said, the first one was no good because the No. plate was in the wrong place the second one is the one fitted. That leaves me enough metal to make a third.
All you need is a sheet of Aluminium about A3 size, I used 2mm because you have to bend it. If you go to a few places that do metal work and ask them nicely I'm sure they will sell you an off-cut at a reasonable price. If not try a scrap yard.
The hardest part of the job is cutting the plastic off the bike and painting the aluminium.
If you get really stuck speak to either me or Wideboy and between us we should be able to talk you through it.
Wideboy did a good thread on making his that you can find here.

look in the yellow pages for your nearest metal stockist (i.e. makes angled ally brackets and all that stuff) then just knock the door of the workshop in and ask if you could have a offcut.
most likely they will ask you where your from to check your not dodgey or anything

My plate is right at the end of the tail tidy. under the rear light. there is about, sorry was a 8-9 inch gap. How have i managed to compress the rear end that much to catch the plate. when i get on the bike i get around an inch drop so i think my rear shock is set up correctly.
any ideas

Well here goes.
This is what happened to my plate the other day.

Here are some measurements i took. (sorry about the lack of artisctic presence) It is measuring 5 1/2" without me on it to the surface of the tyre directly under the plate
http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n61/andyharding/bimemeasure.jpg
The red line was how my plate was before i bent it back to correct position.

What do you all think. Is the plate too close to the tyre. My new plate is slightly smaller and i am going to mount it an inch higher.

You have got me worried now, that looks to be in the same place mine is!
The only thing I can see is it looks like you have the plate at 90deg from the ground, if it was 90deg from the tray, that would give you a bit more clearance.
It looks like you should have been o.k though, did you hit a massive pot hole or bump up a kerb or something?
Allso that looks like the standard plate, a smaller one would give you even more clearance

shifter is right, also how did you fix the plate bracket to the undertray? could this have possibly moved?
is pretty weird :smt069

No hit nothing. No pot holes, kerbs etc. I was riding hard and it was really windy so all i can think off is during extreme conrers at 100mph the extra push down from the wind has just pushed the back end down too much.
The plate is a 8" x 6" and was mounted originally at 90 degrees to the tray. Just ordered a 7.5" x 5.5" plate from mal plates.

The plate bracket is riveted onto the undertray and is solid. also i have put extra fittings on the tray when i fitted it to make it more stable and to stop extreme vibration.

Think I might nip out and get an even smaller plate just in case (officer):D

Some MOT stations might not bother about it, but the Police are still cracking down on them.

Ill risk it. On the MAL plates website they had the same size plate in the legal section. I just needed one quick so didn't have time to send docs off so went for a show plate. to be honestst its virtualy the same as the legal one. i think the letters are slightly different though.

I think the big issue at m.o.t's is that the characters on the plate are on 2 lines, rather than one single line.

I think I'm going to find 2 people who weigh 18 stone and get them to sit on my bike so I can see what happens with the suspention and the plate.

hmm i don't know what size im going to go for, might make some up out of card and see what looks most legal :)

In the gospel according to Haynes, the rear suspension travel is 125mm, that's 4.9". if you had 5.5" that should have been plenty????

The clamp down by the police is because ANPR can only read standard font, I have no idea why. As for an MOT you should be safe.

I have bit the bullet and been to halfords for a plate to replace my smashed one as my MAL Plate aint turned up yet. My new plate is massive. Its about the size of an A4 aheet of paper. Surley you are aloud them smaller by law.
Well off to the garage for an MOT now. cant wait to get back and put my exhaust and my small plate back on (when it turns up)

The suspension needs to be free to move for the entirety of its travel.
If you ignore this simple rule you might as well stick a screaming eagle on the tank and start wearing those buttock-ventilated leather trousers popularised by John Wayne and Freddy Mercury
