Hi all, getting my bike back on the road next week, having new tyres fitted. As I’ve fallen off before due to new tyres, douse anyone know how to help remove the slippynuss of a new tyre?
I’ve got the tyres in my garage at the moment was thinking of scrubbing them with something rough to remove the waxy coating.

Just go steady on them, or maybe find a trackday-junkie to bake them for a bit in tyre warmers? Dunno whether that's a good idea or not, but I heard it somewhere.

take care and ride sencibly with gradualy increasing lean angles. try to get them on a dry day becasue new tires in the rain is not fun or safe!

Do you know anyone with a set of tyre warmers?!?!?
'sweating' the tyres in warmers to let the goo seep out then going out for a ride on hot rubber is the way forward :)
Whatever you do, don't spray brake cleaner or any other solvent on the tyres as someone is bound to suggest ... you wouldn't do that on a condom before using it would you!?!? ;) ... it's simply not the brightest thing to do!! :D

scrubbing in new tyres at this time of year is character building.
Seriously just ride it, taking it steady build up the speed and lean angle. Riding on the road really is the best way IMHO of scrubbing them in.

Im with the others, im having to scrub my daytonas tyres in, just ride that little bit extra steady on the road until you are happy that they are scrubbed in, i will admit im gonna get some help with getting the edges scrubbed in as im not quite that confident on her yet-so will be ahnding her over to my fella when the better weathers here :thumleft::oops:

Why?
Surely you won't need the edge of the tyre until you are leaning it over and when you are leaning it over that far, you will quickly scrub them in yourself!
Seems strange to me. :)

yeah just take it steady
i tend to get some petrol on a rag and wipe it on the tyres to get rid of the wax but make sure you get the petrol off lol and not use diesal :)

im trying to lean it over but edge needs scrubbing in before im 100% confident to lean it over....vicious circle...plus its a good excuse to let treacle get his hands on her ;)

I just had new tyres and rode home in the hail and rain. Just be sensible and be progressive with the throttle and lean angles.
My tyres are scrubbed in now

I wouldn't.
The most extreme I'd get is to scrub them with water and a brush.

I thought washing them was ******** anyway? Surely what you need to do is get some heat into the tyre, ergo go for a ride.
consider how it is for racing, if you're lucky you might get two or three laps to scrub in a new set before proper balls out racing on them.
Gradually build up on them and you'll be fine. Riding them normally and getting a little warmth into them should also sort out the edges, you dont necessarily need to lean them right over to the edge for that.
Tyre warmers would be the luxury approach :-), you get to heat them up whilst watching through the kitchen window with a cuppa.
Come to think of it, tyre warmers before a road ride is something I've never considered ;-) might get me to work faster.

I thought it was a bit strange too ... in short I think we can assume Paws doesn't want to be seen with 15" chicken strips!! :D

I still have small chicken strips. :) (My excuse is i've only ridden the bike in dodgy weather or with a dodgy knee :p)
I'm waiting for better weather then i see it as a challenge to get rid of them. Everyone on the R6 forum i use reckons its pretty difficult(compared to other tyres) to get all the way to the edge on the stock rubber.

Yeah right :-)
Consensus is overwhelmingly that its more work. Of course it can be done, but lots of people complained they were having trouble on the Dunlops and as soon as they switched hoops, no chicken strips. There are lots of photos. :D

I should also point out that in the thread i'm refering to, doing a trackday is seen as cheating. :)

ermm im not bothered about chicken strips , its just i know treacle is a better rider than i am and can get the edges scrubbed in better and quicker than i could....also means i can my hands on his 10 if i wanted..

lol,the guys are trying to wind me up as im have un-scrubbed/un-used strips on the edges of my tyres on my new daytona, ive not had it long enough to really feel 100% on leaning it over so im gonna hand it over to my fella so he can have a play and finish scrubbing them in for me...but it also means i get to play with his zx10 if i want ;)

So you haven't ridden it long enough to get eh feel and lean it over, yet you expect to had the keys to treacle and him to do it on his first ride?!!? :D
Also will having scrubbed tyres to the edges suddenly make you start flicking it on its side ... I think not ;) That will come with time as your confidence grows, you will get further and further over ... so in short, you don't need anyone to scrub your tyres in for you, you can/will do it for yourself (in time).

ermm yes as treacle is a more confident rider and is used to riding something with abit more omph to it than a little sv like i am! i only get to use the daytona at weekends had it 3 weeks, its been used one weekend so far..
i wont be "suddenly" flicking it from side to side but i havent quite the confidence yet to take it that bit further...whereas treacle has....
they arent ideal tyres to be running in winter weather and i hate scrubbing tyres in at the best of times-let alone in this weather!

My point is - why do you need treacle to scrub them in at all?!!? ... why scrub in a tyre in a place you won't be using (for now) and not likely to suddenly jump onto; it just doesn't make any sense ...
Oh and if he is only getting a go to scrub the tyres in, does that make him a 'scrubber' !?!? :D

Just take a long 150 mile countryside run on a dry day, take it easy on the outbound journey, push a bit harder when your heading for home - job done.

ermm because i do wanna use the bike and i do sometimes wanna go out on her, i didnt buy it to sit outside under a cover ,plus i wanna see what my baby can do in the right kinda hands/rider, ive already promised treacle when shes run in he can take her on track.
Hmmm nope it doesnt make him a scrubber, it makes him a rider who i trust on a 3 week old bike with new tyres :smt023 (and its payback for him laughing that i have to run it in) :smt087
Now shall we stop de-railing?

Do you see what I did there?!?!?!?! :takeabow: :D
Paws .. it is your bike, but I find it funny how you are covering up the fact you want someone else to wear off your chicken strips under the guise of it being safer for you to then ride .. when at the end of the day it doesn't make it any safer if you are not using that part (for now) anyway!! :D
Its vanity young lady, just admit it (we all already know it anyway) and we can move on!! ;) :smt044

ermm not covering up at all-ask treacle-hes seen me riding her-im going into corners either v v slowly or near bolt upright as i dont trust the tyres, felt like riding on ice when i first picked the bike up :o id rather he at least scrubs the edges in abit further than id feel comfortable doing at the mo and then i can start taking corners with abit more faith in the tyres, and then i can finish them off come summer :)

Ah, I see, bearing in mind that in reality if treacle can lean it far enough to scrub the tyres in, you could have - this is an issue 'in your head' and the only way to resolve is to have belief the tyres will grip if you lean over, to gain this faith you have to see it has been done before ... I see that now.
If you really really don't like the tyres and it is taking much of the joy out of riding (no one likes riding scared the tyres are going to let go), then why not change them for something you have used and loved before? You don't have to chuck the ones on there away, slap them back on when you have got more used to the bike/in the summer!! 8) Or flog them if you now have a mental block with them ...

I don't know, all this talk of getting hold of Treacle's 10', flicking it side to side and finishing them off come summer is all a bit much for me 8-[
I'd like my personal scrubber-in too :smt023
So I'll give you £50 for the Pirelli's ;-) :-)

I know treacle can lean it far enough over, just check out his trackday pic ;)
Yes it is a case of faith and confidence, and after having 2 offs in one year (one minor and one major) its something im slowly re-building-add on thats a new bike and still quite alien and v extreme to me compared to the sv =paws asking for help-something im not ashamed in doing, id rather see treacle prove its a confidence/mind thing and HOW to do it, then try and do it myself and bin a 3 week old bike
NEVER had a full on sports bike-let alone one thats running sports tyres, the sv ran metz roadtecs, havent got a mental block with-just they arent the easiest tyres to have on in this weather and i nknow teryiamonkey and edski will agree with me there, also small thing of lack of cash means i dont have luxery of changing tyres.

I never doubted for a second that Treacle could do it .. I just didn't see why you needed him to do it for you ;) ... but I see that now.
The Trumpa comes with Supercorsas on right? Personally I think they are fabulous tyres, hot cold, wet, dry, they still inspire confidence ...
But I also know what it is like to have a mental block with tyres ...
If seeing Mr T riding them doesn't sort your head out, then I suggest if you liked the metz, then get a pair of them chucked on 8)

Having fallen off 3 weeks ago on new tyres I'd say take it real easy for the first few miles. Weave it in and out gently on the straights, but the most likely place to fall off is leaning the bike too much in the slow corners, ie mini roundabouts, t-junctions etc. I was half a mile away from the bike shop, if that :-)
In fact the last thing that went through my mind as I turned right from a t-junction was how well I was taking the corner with the new tyres and wham, on my a55 with the bike facing the wrong way. Very annoyed indeed!
So my tip - dont lean it round the real slow corners, try and steer it round if you can, then use the faster speed straights to weave the bike in and out to expose more of the tyre to the road.

Tell you what, we will bake your tyres in my warmers at packing up time on Monday at silverstone. By the time I have loaded everything up in my van your tyres will be nice and toasty and you can ride off home!! 8)
The baking process sweats out all the goo and with hot tyres you will ooze confidence ... that is unless it is still p1ssing of rain and then there is no point!! :smt012
