Dave Grohl is superb, hes worked with a whole load of bands..Queens of the stone age, Tenacious D etc. Nirvana were ok, had Kurt Cobain not been a plonker, then they could have gone a little further, but in all honesty I think they'd have had their day after a couple more albums.
And I'm going to say foo fighters anyway, because we've always wound my other half up for looking like him in his Nirvana days!

considering dave grohl was the drummer for nirvana and then the lead in foo fighters, plus being a little more sane. Oh and not forgetting the great songs, i'll have to say foo fighters!

Honestly I am shocked. Respect people's opinion but do not understant it.
Nirvana was perhaps the most influencing band in the 90s. Set up new genre. Kobain's vocals were fantastic ... loud, raw, full of anger and frustration. He was a tormented soul that's for sure, but hell of a musician.
For me Foo fighters are one of many but Nirvana was one off.

Seriously people it has to be Nirvana! I like Foo Fighters, but better than Nirvana? Come off it!
I'll forgive the teenage oiks as they are probably too young to have any recollection of that era and its immediate aftermath.
You only have to look at the charts to tell there is no accounting for some peoples tastes.

I'm not so sure he was that good a musician, yes they were there at the time of a very influential time in music, but they got the popularity vote built on the foundations laid by such bands as Green River, Butthole Surfers, Mudhoney etc. don't get me wrong i don't mind Nirvana, i was at the age of 19 or there abouts when they came out, I prefered Pearl Jam, but their predecessor Mother Love Bone were considered more influential of the time.
I also prefer Alice In Chains to Nirvana..Layne Stayley had a voice sooooo unique. I could go on about the grunge scene for ages as the music has stuck with me all these years....perhaps more so than my beloved goth stuff, which is another story.....

Kurt not good enough? Well I suppose that is a matter of choice. Surely there have been better singers/guitarists than him but no ONE ... I will repeat that NO ONE with more passion.
As for MLB being considered more influential I am not sure? Considered by expert maybe. But than we can argue about any band. I used to love Razor ... yet no one seemed to notice them at that time. As far as the vocal goes ... He had a voice that was unique if you know what I mean?

well Dave, we could argue over music for hours. In our houses we have two big passions, bikes and music. my other halfs best mate owns a music shop, and got very embarassed when he saw that my othe half owned more than was actually in his shop!!!!!!
Its like you say, its all a matter of choice, for instance my other half could quite easily sit and listen to Cannibal Corpse( which would quite frankly make me beat the hi fi with a big hammer) and on the other hand talk fondly at seeing James Brown in Leeds, 2 years before he died.
TBH the only Nirvana album that I really do like listening to regularly is 'Unplugged', to which it usually ends up with me getting my guitar out to( then the other half wants to beat the hi-fi)

they were the band that Pearl Jam were formed from. Andy wood was the lead singer, who incidently like Kurt Kobain was another tortured soul, he died of a drugs overdose. I think all the members of Pearl Jam (apart from Eddie Vedder) originated from there

I think Simon Neil from Biffy Clyro would out-passionate him in a straight passion-fight. For one thing, he's not dead :D But also, he can sing a bit as well as making horrible gargling noises.

I prefer the foo's, they have some good humor i their music. Nirvana wasnt really that great. Good, but not great.
But then, I'd rather listen to chilrden of bodom or metallica

Foo Fighters for me, too. Got 4 tickets to see them in Wembley this June so looking forward to that :D
Ignoring the whose best thing (I can't say) but sadly most stuff like this will be won by who's currently most popular. Hence all the "best blah blah of the year/decade" etc having recent commercial successes as the winner.
LoTR - good films maybe - best of all time, Nope.
Harry Potter - ditto

Two very different styles of music. Nirvanana were raw, passionate and very deep. The foo's tend to be much more relaxed about their songs, while no bad thing it's very different. I have to say though that the foo's latest album, (EPSAG) while really good almost borders on mainstream at points. Don't get me wrong I love the foo's but Nirvana were a musical revolution, leaps and bounds ahead of the Foo's. Greater without a doubt.
I once saw Dave Grohl asked this question. He replied something along the lines that:
"Nirvana was like a bomb just waiting to go off all the time. The Foo fighters are more like a carnival!"
I think he preferred the Foo fighters, and Kurt isn't around to vote the other way. I've got favourite tracks from both bands, depends on the mood to some extent.
Sure people aren't voting for Nirvana because Kurt went out in a blaze of glory? There's strong passion and imagery there, but it doesn't make his work better, just means we never got to know if the next album was any good... And the Foo fighters have kicked out several very good albums.
Jambo

possibly because he was "only the drummer" in Nirvana ?
possibly because he was "only the drummer" in Nirvana ?
Well as I pointed out dear old Kurt didn't feel like hanging about to put forward his side of the argument, and who knows, if he had maybe the Foo Fighters would be very different, if they existed at all...
But he's spent more time with either band than the rest of us so I thought it was worth mentioning...

Dave grohl was also the drummer for the queens of the stone age as well wasnt he ? voted for Nirvana cos of there influence on music but dont think they would have lasted much longer anyway, quite like the Foo fighters though, get to my age though and its all just noise and what are they singing ? you cant hear the words ! and they want to get the hair cut :D
Foo Fighters for me, too. Got 4 tickets to see them in Wembley this June so looking forward to that :D
Have I ever told you how much I admire and respect you ? cos I do you know :D

I voted for Foo Fighters. I like their music more than Nirvana's (I have 3 Nirvana albums, and virtually all Foo albums). It really p*sses me off when people ask a question then have a pop at others when they don't get the answers they wanted. Before I get flamed for that I'd like to point out that its not aimed at ANYONE in particular, its just a general observation. My own musical tastes are so diverse that I could listen to nearly anything as long as I like it. I like to listen to stuff from Keane and 1Republic all the way thru to Limp Bizkit and Nine Inch Nails. I don't tend to analyse who is the best at this or that (musically anyway). If I like a given track then I'll listen to it. Incidentally, the album I'm currently listening to on the CD player in the van is Nirvana's self titled album.
Go Figure!!

See, I don't think they were, it's just that Nirvana were taking their ideas from bands most people have never heard of, whereas the Foo Fighters aren't. I don't think Kurt ever claimed to be doing anything revolutionary, though I could be wrong there, he was always good for pointing out the debt his music owed to other bands.
nirvarna as grohl wouldnt be where he is today without them

Calm down Emo kids. Nirvana were really just a rip off of the Pixies, nothing new. Wanna know the last thing that went through Kurt Cobains mind?

Pffff that is not true at all, they are wildly different!
Despite agreeing that Cobain is not a superhero, Nirvana were FAR more influential than the Foo Fighters and therefore get my vote.

Foo Foo's..
Muah... I like them both...

Edit: and that's for their different qualities. Neither to me is better. If I'm in a heavy angry mood I'll tend to listen to Nirvana and if I'm in a happy rocky mood, I'll listen to Foo Fighters.
