now with the purchase of my new car happening in the next few weeks (fingers crossed) I've hit a wall, petrol or diesel?

at the moment i have diesel and would go for another one but now everyone has one, mr brown has realised and its not so cheap as it once was.

now if i go for petrol for the new one i get alot better/more car for my money but what i want to know is, a few months down the line will mr brown and his gimps bump up my tax considerably (like everything else) as i know in their words "they want to get petrol engines off the road"

petrol = 1.8L, diesel = 2.2L

TAX: petrol ?166, diesel ?145

INSURANCE : both the same

MPG: petrol 27.7 with lead foot, diesel 34 with lead foot (but usual is around a claimed 50MPG compared to 34MPG for petrol)

0-60: same (i don't really care about this:))

now as you can see the only advantage for diesel is slightly cheaper TAX and slightly better MPG, but with the way the fuel prices are going it cancels its self out really, no?

i don't know what to do :smt095

diesel is good but unless your doing 15k plus a year they never pay for themselves, i choose petrol because the car was (in my case) 3k cheaper than a diesel model, and i enjoy the performance of a petrol car, the turbo lag on my vw passat made me sleepy.

With the figures you're giving you'd need to be doing at least 18k miles a year for 5 years for it to be worth it. I've got a diesel and it it will probably never pay its extra worth but it's not as depressing week to week to fill it up. Smoke and mirrors.

A mate of mine did the sums and worked out somehow, that diesel would have to be about ?2 a litre for a diesel car to be uneconomic. Based on this he bought a diesel Audi A4. My Golf is a diesel and I like it coz you don;t have to thrash the A^$e off it there is nothing to prove. That and the 60mpg I got on a recent trip down to Dorset

i can't afford to buy a car because it's fun, i buy a car to get me and 4 other people, plus their luggage, and our dog, or me and my survey equipment, from A-->B with the minimum of fuss and the minimum of cost...;)

I like diesels because they are grunty, no need to change gear all the time.

Ever heard the Audi R10? Me neither.
Thats a diesel, and they've done well in LMP1, so they're not all boring :-P

I'd have a diesel car, as cars are pretty boring in general unless they're completely stupid ones.

I've never gone along with that sentiment. Diesels are hopeless below turbo range, and redline at 5.5 krpm whilst running out of puff before that. That doesn't make for an engine that you don't have to change gears very often with. In my experience an equivalent NA petrol car is much more easy on the gearstick, with a smoother delivery of power through a longer rev range, even if it doesn't hit the tdi torque figures. I also hate the way diesels have a first gear which runs to about 20 mph! So annoying, On the plus side they chug up hills without going near the throttle.

Go for a diesel if it makes financial sense, otherwise don't bother.

well i went diesel for all of 6 months then i got bored:( my little diesel spell cost me ?1500 in depreciation in that 6 months!, yea the mpg is great but its just no fun unless your on a motorway, i like my petrol car:) yea tax is nudging ?200 per year and my average mpg is about 25 to the gallon buy hell its fun:) i only drive about 6k per year so pointless having a diesel for me.

My Merc (C200 estate) is a diesel and it's boring. Really boring. Slow - and then slow again. I wish I'd had the petrol. That said, I was in Cornwall over Easter and on the way back it did 45mpg. Not bad for an automatic 2.2 and very heavy estate car. And at 90 it's fairly frugal too. Still wish I had the petrol though...

I'm thinking of getting rid of my diesel. Cost of Diesel is like 10p a litre more than petrol! Car tax is steep as we get punished for 'smoke emissions' (bollox) so that is £210 next year.

Trouble is, no one wants to buy diesels now so I lose all ways!

My Skoda Octavia 1.9TDi (diesel) takes a wee all over my girlfriend 1.2 Nissam micra petrol on MPG, i get 100 miles to ?12 (at current price), speed not that bad aswell.

You should have not been so tight and got the C270 Diesel. :D

Although I liked the C320 I had for a while. Company cars do spoil you :(

Another reason I gone off my diesel X-Trail is global warming means I don't need 4x4 really, so I fancy something more fun. A V6 petrol sounds appealing.....

Im looking to offload my MX5 now, Ive taxed it for 6 months and its got a years MOT & Serviced. Im sick of cars, they dont excite me and if anything I just want something to get to work & back, but at the same time a hatch which can transport stuff about. Its all well and good to have a nice car, but at the end of the day, if its just a means of getting from A to B, whats the point in spending a fortune on something where you could put the money to something which you actually enjoy? I never thought Id see the day when I was beginning to dislike driving but 10 years in and Im starting to get sick. Maybe its just a phase.

I have an X5 sport, which is petrol, but if i was to buy another car then it would definitely be diesel. I rarely use it so i'm shielded from the real cost of running it, but when my dads in england and uses it he always gripes about the cost of filling it.

Go with Petrol!!!

Diesel's are unpleasantly noisy..... and they stink.
And Petrol Cars have more power!!

Or you could turn to something totally different....

My SV runs on natural gas...... :o
but still makes plenty of power due to some advanced weight savings.

Got a new plate and this registration from DMV yesterday!!!

To be fair....
Gas is what petrol is called in the U.S.
(Just thought it was funny)

As for the weight....
I guess they "expect" me to be flying.... :smt102

Love my Focus diesel, but I do loads of motorway miles. I drove the 1.6 petrol Focus (rental car) on a regular journey of mine and it did 35mpg in comparrison to my cars regular 48 (real world- not gay trip-computer optimistism) and it was gutless.

Diesel all the way- you can drive fast without the guilt

I had a brief spell with an old 1994 Rover 418 TD recently and thrashing it around it did 45mpg or about 420 miles to ?45 of diesel. Now got myself a Mk1 MX5 and it does 30mpg or about 250 miles to ?40 of petrol - but how much more fun! :D:D:D

If you do the miles its worth it - if you dont and are a "petrol-head" then whats the point?

I'm sure you need to be doing 24k a year for a diesel to be worthwhile.

I would opt for the diesel myself, although at the price I saw it this morning I dont think i would bother.

Petrol = 108.9p
Diesel = 121.9p

Ouch £70+ a tank

Sorry mate, get out of buying American rubbish cars and get hold of a modern European or Japanese diesel car. E.G. BMW 3.5 litre straight 6 or the VW/AUDI 2.7 V6 sound like proper 6-cyl engines and go like stink. (Added advantage of getting a European car is they go round corners and have headlights that actually light the road!) Less exotic stuff like Toyota 2.2 or Honda 2.2 are also mighty fine engines and kick out plenty of power.

That was he BP just off junction 26 of the M1 lol

LPG was 59.9p......hardly worth the bother LPG anymore, plus the tax saving on it is being removed at some point soon.

Petro ,diesel or LPG no matter which,it all depends what you want from your car.Running costs is not just fuel, servicing cost, tax and insurance, plus depreciation is what gives your cost per mileI have just sold my diesel as I was doing in excess of 20K per year and it was the cheaper optionNow that I have no commute to work I have changed to a small sports coupe which is slightly more on fuel but because of the reduced mileage cheaper on insurance and I have less servicing costs it works out about the same mile for mile-----JUST LOADS MORE FUN------------

Petrol anyday, but I've got diesal at the mo, only because it was a cancelled order at the Fiat garage and I quite liked it.

When they offered it to me for £7k instead of £12k I bit their hand off, bargain hey!

But the turbo takes about 6hours to kick in, well it feels like it!

But if I want to go fast I've got my bike for that.

well i do about 150-200 a week so it works out around the 10000 a year mark, at the moment my car does 65MPG easy but as people say, its very very slow (straight diesel, non turbo)

but what gets me annoyed is that my car will do 65MPG+ and yet my mates will do 35-40mpg but they're both the same tax banding and the tax on my current cage has gone up in the past 6 months.

so at the mo im practically given up on diesel that why im considering petrol, the way i look at it is:

Advantages of petrol: quick(ish)/fun, i know more about them than diesel, running costs sort of the same a diesel (now), i get alot more car for my money.

only disadvantage i can think of is my tax shooting up in a few months, the price of diesel falling (yeah right:lol:)

American cars rubbish???
Yes They Are!!!! (God Bless Them)
I'm in the car repair business!!!

America makes no performance cars except the $$$$$ exotics (Corvette, Viper, Ford GT) none of which would be useful for touring or everyday use.

Can't beat the Japanese for reliability.
The BMW"s are good cars too.
The VW's they sell here are....er...well...not up to par with the others mentioned.

Honestly have not seen a Japanese car with a diesel since at least 02' maybe earlier....
Likewise..a diesel V6 VW/Audi. (Lot's of diesel 4's)
The performance cars they sell here (at least all the jap. cars I've seen) have turbo's and such but are petrol powered.
Diesel is not that popular here. America is looking to petrol/ethynol blended fuels as the new alternative.
One state already sells only Ethynol blended fuel.

I've always been told NOT to add alchohol to carb'ed motorcycles.
(without changing jets)
I wonder how this stuff will affect my SV!!!!:o

Oh and sorry diesel fans....
I guess I really haven't seen a modern diesel.

I still say go Petrol!!
(I don't sell diesel) ;)
