View Full Version : Isle of Man
Well next year is the big 4-0 and Mr Lou have been trying to decide where to go and what to do.
Now, I don't go abroad, long story and no one understands if Iexplain anyway, so Mr Lou hit on the idea of taking the bikes to the Isle of Man (not during TT).
I can't wait, though I'm panicking about taking the bikes on the ferry as it's something I've never done before and Oliver is my pride and joy.
But can anyone recommend a nice hotel (don't need it to be cheap, but does need to be quiet) that has secure parking for the bikes. Which are the best towns to stay in?

I have a mate who comes from the IoM - I will have a word :)
I had many a holiday in the IoM. Family from there.
Anywhere on the island is accessible from anywhere so don't think that you've got to stay in Douglas.
Port Erin is a nice costal (there's a surprise) town. The beach is okay. The sea is warm due to the gulf stream.
IoM ice cream is the best I've ever had. Get some crabs from the fisherman when the boats come in (pleae no puns etc!)
There's the Laxy wheel (a big wheel you can go up), a hill you can go up (in mediaeval times they used to put withces in bareels & roll them down, sounds like fun), there is/was a go-karting track.

You have got to camp when you get there. Its cheap and tremendous fun. There is a camp site outside kirk michael which is cheap for camping and if you dont fancy camping they have little villas as well.
Here is a link to their site.

If you dont fancy this place, and your not going during tt or mgp weeks then douglas should be nice. lots of bars resteraunts etc.
Ramsey is also a really nice place to stay just lacks places to eat. Stay away from the indian in the high strret. 4 of us went and non of us ate it was that bad.
Peel and Castle town are very nice as well. Castle town is really nice place to look around. nice little village.
As for the bikes on the ferry. you will be fine. just remember not to use your front brake or you will end up sat on the floor.
You will have to post back when you decide and let us know whats its like.
Hope you enjoy the center of the universe or the Isle of man as other people know it
Stayed in Peel and its a lovley little fishing village with small harbour. Highly advised if you want the quiet side of the island.

Where's it going to go? I know a guy leaves the keys in his at times
Yorkie, Mr Lou said the same! 'We're on an island for gods sake!' But I'm just a bit protective of the triumph.
Sounds like anywhere on the island is good, but I'm afraid camping is out of the question, I love it, but Mr Lou hates it, it has to be a hotel for him, and as he's paying I won't say no!

I met the Head of Manx Heritage once over there at the Laxey Wheel. He left his keys in his ignition, told me he never took them out. Never locked his house when he went out either; the crime level over there is negligable.

maybe he didn't have a very good car?

It's a brilliant place, and the roads are amazing, but if you live there then there's nothing to do except for the biking. Most of the interesting stuff I heard about over there seemed to involved either drunken brawling or shagging each others wives.
