View Full Version : feminism according to me...

So I swam, run, played football.
"Stop whistling" my gran would say, "it's not lady like..."
"I don't want to be a lady, I want to be me!". The tomboy inside me was screaming out. Am I a boy girl...was I meant to be a boy...?

NO! I'm a girl who finds the things that girls like... BORING...

But cliches, stereotypes, all the things that the humans with a blinkered vision say is "normal" tends to put a stop to many things...and makes many people unhappy...I'm very lucky!

There is no rule book which really tells us what is right and what is wrong when it comes to us being who we are...
If we try to live by someones else's ideals in the long run we'll be unhappy...

So I run, train Martial Arts, ride a motorcycle, dive, swim, drive like a lunatic at times, ski of any mountain. I will go back to horse riding as well.

Am I a woman...? hell yes...but I AM who I want to be, forgetting what the cliches and stereotypes are, not really caring what most people will think about me. It's beyond the realms of their understanding, so I won't waste my time trying to explain WHY?

To me that's feminism...I will be who I want to be and I will not be told that I can't do it because I'm a girl, or I will not be as good as doing it because of it.

Stand back, that bra is burning mighty strongly!!!

Only joking. I agree with you; no-one should conform to stereotypes...I really love science, but I'm not nerdy (geeky, but not nerdy). I ride bikes, but I'm not a ruffian or a hells angel type. I am deeply into my heavy metal, but I dont have long hair

wish i did have long hair though, perfect for those moments when you need to windmill it, newstead style

oh please - That is hardly outrageous is it?? NONE of those are overly 'blokey' things to do these days .. riding bikes is male dominated, I'd agree, but a female motorcyclist is hardly ground breaking ;) The rest of the stuff has to be equally spread male and female? - apart from horse riding - that is so Girly!! :D

Although you have a point there are lots of people out there who still think women should stick to more ladylike hobbies like cross-stitching and baking (unleash the sexist chauvanists :-P) and it's rather sad. I for one think one should be as much of a rebel as possible and live life to the full, seeing as it is far too short to bother about what other people think.

(however, i do like to bake the odd bun or crumble :D)

...

Who are these people?? ... in this day and age, very few people under the age of say 50 I can tell you that!! ;) .. as for the people over 50, especially the most likely candidates to have that sort of viewpoint (the pensioners) will all be dead soon enough, so the problem then goes away!! 8)

Things and attitudes evolve, it just takes time that is all. By burning bras and making statements about it is actually having the opposite effect, its actually highlighting something is ‘wrong’ and hence segregating yourselves from the pack .. if you just shut up about it and got on with it, no one would care and it would seem a lot more natural .. its basic psychology ..

But we all know you girls like to make a fuss about anything/everything!! :D

Oh and ask any bloke on here - if you found out a girl (you didn't know already) rides a bike - it makes her cool!! :cat: Not a tom-boy!!

Long gone are the days when a girl having the same interest/s as a bloke is a bad thing, just the opposite!! :eye: For example, assuming they don't already, few blokes on here would say they wouldn't want a partner that was at least semi-interested in bikes!! ;)

Who are these people??

My mother be one of them. A few years ago she would have crumpled at the idea of me on a motorbike, or white water rafting or climbing. She has now realised that this is what people do and as a result doesn't chew my ear off with "well I don't agree with it, girls your age ...." and "when I was your age I wouldn't have dreamed of doing such a thing..." etc etc.

Thankfully things are being accepted far more, but there will always be some who frown upon whatever it is you choose to do, not much can be done about that. Just do whatever you want to do, do it wholeheartedly and don't look back. You're living your life, no-one else :)

Gotta agree with this, my parents bought me the first 4 bikes i owned and there both old. I think some girls have a bit of a chip on there shoulder about being a girl instead of just getting on with life and doing what they want to do.

My mother be one of them.

I think you need to be able to distinguish between your parents/mother caring for you/your safety and thinking what you do is tom-boy!! ;) What you said there slaps me in the face they are thinking about the danger elements of what you do - the way she worded it wasn't perhaps the best way to get results, but caring about her daughters welfare is simply being a (good) mum!!!!!!! 8)

I am sure if you played football or playing darts or something there would be much less of a fuss made - not the sort of things your mother would have done either, but I am sure she cares very little from the feminism point of view, just your chosen interests have a big danger element! - why don't you ask her about it!! ;)

Caring is one thing but I know for a fact my mam used to (and still does to an extent) have a very set idea in her head about what I should and shouldn't be doing. She still likes to point out to me what is and what isn't a man's/woman's car for example...

I just take it with a pinch of salt now though, I know that most of what she says is just her maternal ways kicking in so yes you be right there, but she is still very set in her opinions when it comes to 'acting like a lady should' :smt102

Luckily all the girls i've seen have had no interest in bikes at all. You can hardly escape them if you glance in your mirror and there they are, let alone as ballast on the pillion seat.

Having said that, if they enjoyed cleaning the bike(like Lissa) then i wouldn't have any complaints. :D

A toy-boy is something an older woman has if the bloke she is seeing is very young...

A TOM-BOY is a girl who does stereotypically 'boys' things.

Mmkay? :p

Personally I think if some of you blokes can put up posts whining about the women in your lives then the girlies are perfectly within their rights to post something like this when something in their life sparks it off.

If you think laMon's bleating unnecessarily, in her defense and as an example some comments I've had about starting up my women's rugby team has had it's fair share of sexist crap and oddly enough only ever from those outside the rugby fraternity.

Why exactly should I choose to go to the bar twice for a half each time when I can just get a pint once? Spread that out across the whole evening and I'd spend most of my time at the bar waiting to be served. Yay.

I don't make a song and dance about being a girl and drinking pints. THEY do.

:p

In fact I reckon the majority of us don't make a song and dance about being girls and doing 'boys' things, it's the people who make the comments about it.

... and chauvenism...

But, this goes hand in hand with letting others do the same, like it or not.

I've never been a 'girly' girl, played football, cricket, climbed trees (in fact I once spent 36 hours up a tree until my parents agreed NOT to make me be a bridesmaid) and had mostly lads as mates growing up. I did ride horses, but living at a racing stables it was hard not too:D

I drank pints when I was still a drinker, have never knitted anything in my life, and work in a mostly male environment.

Am I a rampant feminist? No. I don't shout if men are courteous enough to hold a door open for me, I don't get all arsey if they call me 'my dear' or 'my love', and I don't think all women should be bra-burning, hairy-legged amazons. I think women should be who they are happy being, and if that's all fluffy and pink that's fine by me.

And to be fair how many of the male sort have been prevented from doing what they want (possibly childcare?) BECAUSE they're male?

As Bem (1975) said Androgeny is the most psychologically healthy way to be - that is equal parts (in terms of behaviour, personality, traits etc, and not biology) of masculine and feminine and gender neutral traits.

You are right, I wouldn't find that attractive/endearing!! (that doesn't mean I wouldn't like you as such) ..

Ok, so sure, a woman who lets the odd 'sly one go' and giggles about it is fine, we all do it, it actually makes it more acceptable when you do it as a bloke (in their presence), but to 'let her rip', belch loudly and not be embarrassed by the fact/girly shy about - that's just filthy!! As is drinking pints! :(

There are some fundamental things that I (me, this is ME - everyone is different - lots of others might like a blatantly uncouth woman) find attractive about a woman acting like a woman!! I'd be questioning my own s3xuality if I found a woman who acts just like a bloke (a boorish one at that) attractive!! ;)

As I said, having interest in a variety of things that boys are into is actually a bonus, but that isn't acting like a bloke! ;)

Your point is irrelevant as YOU have stated you don't like women doing it at all.

I find anyone doing it hilarious in the right setting. MOST settings are the right setting, with the exception of probably posh restaurants... though just thinking about it I'm sitting here giggling.

So, ok, maybe a serious 'us' conversation or an argument is the wrong setting... but that's only because it shows a certain lack of seriousness in a serious situation.

I'd find it funny at a funeral though...

I used to film university lectures for a living. I'd often have to mentally hammer myself to keep from giggling when even the memory of someone letting rip would replay over and over again in my head. I'd be standing there grinning like an idiot, nearly in tears.

Ok, so you did see that girls ARE allowed to pass wind, but as for the rest of it - not quite ;) .. girls can 'loud and proud' and swig pints if they like (good luck to them) it is 'allowed' but (to my mind) it just makes them 'Rough'!!

i.e. after you have guzzled 6 pints, consequently burped and farted such that it has reverberated the whole room (probably making me gag over the smell too) .. Uhh???? :-s

A large, lidded cast-iron pot with a fold-away, bail handle. Originally, the dutch oven was used as just that, a bread oven. In the days when most families lacked modern stoves, and depended on the fire-place hearth for their cooking, a dutch oven could be filled with bread dough, lidded and buried in hot embers in order to bake the bread. Nowdays, the dutch oven is usually placed atop the stove to cook beans and stews, though sometimes it is still used in a conventional oven to cook bread loaves and baked beans. In rare instances, a cast-iron dutch oven can double as a deep-fryer.

There you go me ArtyLady  ;)

A large, lidded cast-iron pot with a fold-away, bail handle. Originally, the dutch oven was used as just that, a bread oven. In the days when most families lacked modern stoves, and depended on the fire-place hearth for their cooking, a dutch oven could be filled with bread dough, lidded and buried in hot embers in order to bake the bread. Nowdays, the dutch oven is usually placed atop the stove to cook beans and stews, though sometimes it is still used in a conventional oven to cook bread loaves and baked beans. Actually, dutch ovens are unacceptable and the end result is the aggressor in agony, squealing like a stuck pig. My sense of humour ends there.

:smt045

So farts aren't ALWAYS acceptable then?!!? Make up your mind woman (and I now evidently have to use that term very loosely)!! ;)

ArtyLady ... its nice to see there is still a little innocence out there ;) ... but here is the full urban dictionary explanation of Dutch oven, with example!! 8)

Dutch oven:

When one passes gas under the cover, and forces his or her spouse,or companion to smell their creation by throwing the cover over ones head..

Blue_ passed gas and thought to himself "thats a good one" and felt it should not go unnoticed, so he pulled the covers over unexpecting Pings head. hearing her curse and and gag he is satisfied. thus giving her a dutch oven..

Personally, I hate femminism...

... and chauvenism...

... I prefer 'personalism'. Do what you want to do, be who you want to be, and never accept being labeled unless it is with your own name.

But, this goes hand in hand with letting others do the same, like it or not.

Im with You there K, have encouraged my kids to do what they were interested in not what they should be doing as a gender. Hope they take that forward in their lives.

im not what i would class as a lady. I ride bikes, take part in mauy thai kickboxing, used to drink pints (but I fall over now) but saying that when I go out I like to wear skirts. I love nice underwear. Not very good in heels but feel good when I do wear them. Ive not really had any bad experiences being a female biker but as soon as they hear Im a mum there are a few raised eyebrows. Its as if you have to stop all fun activities once you become a mum. its more tolerated a girl doing "boyish" activities than a boy doing "girlish" stuff. when my son was young he used to love playing with his sisters polly pocket toys, his dad went mad saying he would turn out gay!!!

I used to play with my sister barbi stuff - although mostly I liked to crash her barbi camper van down the stairs. I didn't turn out gay (que comments from the TVSF lot about my hair).

I think the divide between the sexes has been getting smaller in all aspects of life, although i accept there is still a certain amount of discrimination (positive and negative). A lot of girls I know DO conform to certain female stereotypes in some aspects, but in others are more masculine than me. Just be who you want I guess, no one with any sort of brain should look down or judge you for being happy with who you are!

No shame in that whatsoever, I can't imagine life with a 'clean' mind, how boring!! O:)
