View Full Version : Gah! Exhaust fitting Help please (NOT SV - VFR!)

My lovely new Staintune exhausts are here at last and I removed the old exhaust and lots of body work to fit the new ones.
New Link pipe went on after some persuasion with a hacksaw and lots of swearing.
Left hand can fitted lovely.
Right Hand can................ will simply not 'slip-on' over the link pipe. The opening in the can is about 0.5 mm too small to slip over the link pipe. No matter what I try, it wont fit. Took the whole lot to an engineering firm so see if they could do anything, but none of the bits would fit on their machines. Best they could suggest was a dremel with a flap wheel to see if that would ease the bore of the can 'slip-on tube' enough to fit. I have no dremmel and no where to get one.
Anyone got any suggestions as to how I can open up this tube just a 0.5 mm (or so) so the damn things will fit?

Might be a dumb solution.
Heat the pipe you want opened up and cool the other pipe that needs to slip inside it. Might be enough to get it to slip over...

Tried heat, but not cooling to. hmmmm maybe.....

Hi Mike. Had the same problem with mine. Have you got an exhaust fitting place local? All they need to do is use a round wedge and wallop into the pipe a few times to flare the pipe. I think they use them quite a bit.

Is not a pipe that needs flaring. it is the part of the can where the link pipe slips INSIDE, need the link pipe shrinking or the part of the can ground out a little.

So no pipe at all jutting out from the can. Bugger.
Sorry Mike, no further tips. Any chance you could post a pic? Somebody might be inspired.

One last thing. Are the cans handed? Maybe swap em over.

Cans are handed. LHS can fits fine to both link pipes. RHS will not fit either. Hence I conclude that the RHS can is too narrow and the link pipes are fine.

Well sadly the only real option is to dismantle the 1 can and sound off to Staintune. Why does nothing ever fit without "adapting".:smt013
However I guess you've cut some off the standard system and you're beyond the point of no return.
If Yorkie Chris were there perhaps he could weld it up.

If you got the cans new from staintune then I sugest you contact them and ask for another right hand silencer! If you got it new but second hand its a shame you don't have a dremel as that would blitz the job in no time, try cutting some slots in the link pipe so when the can is slid over the top it compresses a little...

Mind you .5mm is small, heating the link pipe up and forcing the silencer in with a rubber hammer should work. Either mark the can and link pipe so they will line up straight before hand and do it off the bike or be very careful on what you apply heat to (and the surrounding area).

Old system should re-fit Pete. Not a total disaster.

Shame it's just a bit too far for an evening ride, I have a shiny new Dremel just waiting to get busy on something!
The sun is out, it's very tempting!

Have done this, but it will have to come from Australia as the effing inporters have none in stock (and mine just arrived from OZ!)

Done the heat, no avail. The can fits OVER the link pipe, not the other way round. Photo to come....

The link pipe fits INSIDE the hole shown. This hole is too small as can will not fit left or right hand side.

Yeah, like most. I mean cut 4 slots into the connecting tube, like seen below. When you slide the can over the top of the connecting tube the tube has some movement and will hopefully compress. I did this with a LeoVince can years ago, just don't cut down further than the amount of the connecting tube that is inside the can once fitted.

One thing about your can, is it the very edge that is to big all the whole bit (i.e. does the end have a lip on it from when the metal tube was cut)?
Luckypants

Well is not a flange or burr. The slip on is very tight and goes on about half as far as it needs to until it is totally jammed.
might try the cutting after speaking to the importer tomorrow and seeing what Staintune in oz have said and his views on cutting the pipe.

Sorted! :D
Made some cuts as suggested by DangerousDave and then fitted a dock off exhaust clamp to crush the link pipe. Used the clamp to bray the hell out of the pipe. The link pipe crushed JUST enough to let the can go on to be fitted and all mounting pints lined up.
Sounds cool........... look out for another post somewhere.

I have video of the various states of the bike (except new exhaust with baffles in, that was rubbish) including no exhaust at all, it sounds good. Will stitch it and post a video after the NW3.
AFTER the NW3???
Listen Mike - it's enough excitement waiting for tomorrow - what you are doing is wrong! You should put us all out of our misery and post at least 1 loud video now...
I need to know whether I have to remove the baffle or not from mine :D can't let u be louder :P

thanks lucky. Now i want a VFR again!!!!!!!!!
I'll never decide on a second bike at this rate!!!!
very tasty :D
i think without the exhausts sounded like a real bike -> see FZ1S :D LOL
but for a VFR it sounds ok I reckon :P

Never heard your bike properly all weekend, must see if I can hear it...
What an improvement on standard. Got to admit i've heard a few cans on the vfr and not been that impressed but they've changed my mind. Nice to hear the v4 in full song. Bet that sounds beastly on the road!

500+ miles later and they are deepening in tone :D. Sounds lovely on the overrun, so am happy.

Sounds sweet! Got a question though - during the 'no exhaust' slot, as the bike revs the back wheel turns?
Why's this (sorry if it's an obvious question!)

I dunno, but I suspect it's something to do with the idler gear spinning the oil which makes the back wheel turn. I do know that happens on every bike I've had if the read wheel not on the deck

I believe it's because it's a wet clutch. That means there is oil (?) between the clutch plates, so even if you rev it in neutral, the oil still transmits some turning force from the engine side of the clutch to the wheel side. Hence, it turns :)
