Only ever had the wine blended stuff, not the real thing (felt a little ripped off by the National Trust...)

Liking or disliking mead is a lot like beer... Some of it's good, some of it's wonderful, but some of it can be downright horrid!

I brew my own beer a lot, and a while back, I branched out and made a batch of mead. I experimented a bit and replaced some honey with agave syrup (same cactus fruit that tequila is made from). It was very interesting, and very tasty. A friend of mine that also brews experimented with various spices, and since he doesn't read this site, I think I'm safe saying it was crap!! :p

Where's the 'I don't know' option? (never tried it but would like an experimental slurp withouth committing to a full pint)

Mead is about the same strength as wine - so maybe not a pint..... (tho I have been known to have a pint in the past - yes LARPing again, and yes out of a tankard :P) - mind you, as it IS you Debs, a pint might be just about right..... :P

Best stuff there is comes from Scotland tho :)

Moniack is certainly one of the best meads. A few years ago, a friend and I did a taste test, comparing her favourite (Moniack) with my favourite (St. Anne's). We both concluded that the St. Anne's was very slightly better. Unfortunately St. Anne's Vineyard has stopped making mead.

Shanklin Mead from the Isle of Wight is superb and Lyme Bay Westcountry Mead is also very good.

The best mead that I've ever had was a home-made spiced mead.

I often wonder why supermarkets don't stock mead, as almost everyone I know loves it.

Never tried it but would love to after reading a few fantasy books in which they drank the stuff. :D

Mead is rank !!

Went to a medieval dinner over christmas at cardiff castle. Wicked venue but they gave you a shot of mead on arrival. Nearly spewed my ring before I'd even started !!

They probably gave you some really cheap and nasty stuff. Good quality mead is excellent.

My latest bottle came from Jamaica Inn Smugglers museum in Cornwall, freshly smuggled for my pleasure :). There was a shop in Earlsdon (Coventry) that sold it too. Other than that, its mail order usually or go to a suitably castley and celticy place and they might be selling some!

It's all or nothing, sorry ;). And as I said in my original post, if you can make it to Oxford, you are welcome to try some of mine :)

I get some from an off-licence near Highgate tube station. That's a bit out of your way, but there must be places in Wales that sell it. I've had some very good Welsh mead in the past.

For anyone on the South-East coast, Middle Farm (http://www.middlefarm.com/) near Lewis does a really good range of mead..

Go big and make your own! :) The brewing process is simple (with quality honey and water, you don't even need to boil anything, just mix the ingredients in a big sterile jug!), but you're looking at a minimum 6 months for a decent mead and a year plus for a really good one. A lot like wine, it gets better with age. It's bascially wine made from mostly honey instead of grapes.

I once attempted to make my own mead. I think that it got contaminated (despite careful sterilizing), as it was absolutely vile and had to be thrown out.

I tried some Canadian mead at a ren-faire in Toronto. It was fairly pleasant, but didn't actually taste anything like mead. Mrs Wyrdness and I were most bemused by it.
