When will people learn that Big Bang approaches are risky and generally a lot more trouble unless there is a real reason to make the change ASAP. A managed staged migration is a lot safer in most cases.
I can see no reason why BA couldn't of transferred domestic flights a month or so before to work out any teething issues with far less passengers. Then after they had worked them out, add short haul again for a month or two find any issues, then finally add long haul.
Don’t try to do everything at once, its a very risky strategy and things will go wrong no matter how much contingency you have in place (or in BA's case none).

Its a typical example of englands service industry......service completely rubbish and finished to an incredibly poor standard.
I was involved with the opening of a £400m shopping centre recently, on the opening day nearly everything broke, the roof leaked, tiles grout cracked, escalators broke down, plus various other things.
Everything done nowdays is done cheap and with corners cut for maximum profit, which results in EPIC failure such as Heathrow T5 and Wembley.
England has a name for itself nowdays in the construction and service industries.
Its not uncommon anymore for manual labour and even contractors/subbies/supplier to be sourced from europe and further afield just to ensure that the service and materials that we get are to a high standard.

And the terminal in Bejing, which is 3 times as big, took half the time, and a thrid of the money opened, without a hitch!

But in beijing, if it did go wrong, i expect the people responsible would suffer dire consequences
Not like here in polite england
"terribly sorry old boy, but theres a slight hitch with the baggage system"
"oh, never mind, lets just cancel some planes and get a cup of tea"

Using slave labour and I bet they got taken out and shot if they complained.

It gets things done though ;)
In all seriousness the firm I work for are international and have several offices in the far east, japan/china/india.
The construction industry is superior and regulated, it is far far ahead of what it used to be.

Worth remembering though that it's not only in England where airport terminal openings go T/U.
In Vancouver, there were similar problems.
And in Denver, CO, USA when they opened a new terminal, there was chaos for 3-4 days following the opening.
I do agree though that a phased opening would have been more appropriate, to just "go live" in one fell swoop is asking for problems.
Using slave labour and I bet they got taken out and shot if they complained.
And the problem with that is? ;)

I work in the construction industry and am currently working on a large PFI school..
It is a sad state of affairs that eveything is done too.... "that'll do" scenario.
It is a well known fact that anything new has problems, this is bigger and as such failed big style...
I saw it on the news last night and stuck me hands in ther air shouting "yea were england and we cant build for toffee" and its sad but true
I was watching a program the night before it opened. It was all about the "new" baggage system, the fact that there are two of them, and that it will"never" go wrong.
oh dear
Reminds me of when I worked in care. Any job we had to get done, get three quotes and go for the cheapest one. Not the one that seemed they could do the job properly mind you...
