View Full Version : Yesterday's leaving speech at work...
Had my last day yesterday.
I'd been there nearly 8 years, it's customary to have a leaving speech from your boss. I've heard some really good leaving speeches over the years & a month ago my boss did a good speech for one of my co-workers.
I was looking forward to mine. My boss started off by talking about current affairs around the world 8 years ago. And that was pretty much it. It was the worst speech I'd ever heard. One of my co-workers even shouted that it was the worst speech ever. It was completely unprepared.
I'm a little bit disappointed by my ex-boss.
More importantly what did you pinch extra above and beyond what you had planned too, due to his incompetence to prepare a better speech for such a valued employee :D

I throw like a girl though, so I'll leave the actualy throwing to someone else

Plenty of time to reflect on him (kindly no doubt) over the next 6 months:smt045

one of the guys at my work retired recently after almost 30 years here. his boss was also utterly unprepared for teh leaving speech, and ended up effectively saying that the guy was boring as there were no good stories to tell about him - and not in a nice/humorous way either!
what an anti-climax to your entire working life...

Hey man, at least your boss said good bye! When I left my last job despite being one of the most pivotal people in the company, he was such a child he didn't even bother to say good bye or be there on the day I left!
I had an ex boss that behaved in a similar manner, just re-affirmed a few of the reasons why I wanted to leave in the first place.
I remember leaving one place. We had to do a 'termination interview' which in itself sounded a little scary but anyhow. So the MD asks me about where I'm going and what I'll be up to etc and then comes out with this gem. He said "It sounds to me like you are only moving because of the better salary, prospects and working environment".
Err, Yeah, I guess that was the reason :-) dozy git
Speachs suck really. Best one i heard was from the lad who left before me. Nothing fancy, but someone asked "whats been your best moment at Simmons" and the reply was "leaving now" which caused a good laugh, and shocked faces to the managment.
On my leaving speach, I was going to remain professional, but i started off saying "well, i just want to say (presses play on pre setup phone song, Queen - I Want to Break Freee)" which got a few laughes, even more when I couldn't stop the bugger.
I started to run out of things to say, so thought, sod it, in front of 60-70 people...
"I'd just like to offer one peice of advice to management, prehapes you will look into looking after your staff a little more, maybe so many won't leave" which got a few claps and cheers from various staff. The management walked away, and i got a lot of handshakes and thumbs up for having the balls to say what everyone else was thinking.
On average, they have gone through about 20 members of IT staff per year, just becuase they couldn't care less. I should have carried on to say "think of how much agency fees you'd be saving" but thought best not to go too far

I also had a leaving do yesterday - kinda, as I am self employed and work inside big companies - so am never a member of staff........but I still got a lunch, a nice card, a pressie (very nice Ciggie Lighter and money for a packet of fags!) a nice (and brief speech!), management up to MD all later came and thanked me individually........which may or may not sound unusual, but.........it was the FIFTH time I have departed this company in the last few years!!
And later today I pick up the new SV650!!!, the sun is shining, it cost me zero to add the SV to my 125 scooter insurance, and no work next week or so.......life is sweet!:smt066
