View Full Version : Knockhill track night anyone? Fri 18th April

I've banned myself from trackdays. But not track evenings :smt077 The first one is rolling around on the 18th of April, which is my brother's birthday but that's OK, I have a spare. Anyone fancy it? I'm still not 100% myself but thought I'd put the word out...

It's tempting...
*exhales* Want to do the Newcomers Track Day first though (109 quid!) because, yes, I really am that timid. :(
ooh its after pay day maybe. not done one on raptor yet though. maybe maybe maybe lol
Tiger you dont need to pay more for newcomer. the evening things are quite quiet, you get instruction before going on and no one really bothers you and its about half the price normally

Yeah, I did an evening one for my first as well, it was ideal. From the ones I've been in and watched, the novice group in the evening is way more novicey than the novice group on the full days is, you get more clowns in the wrong group at weekends. But the evening was a great intro to trackdays. Short sessions too, which would annoy me on a full day but it's quite good when you're just getting into it. Though that might have changed of course.
I'd be back in novice anyway, I'd do intermediate I suppose if there was an inters session but I'm definately not advanced :smt045 and I won't be pulling out the stops either, if I do this one it'll be a bit more relaxed.

How much is for the evening sessions?

£45. Which is actually pretty expensive for the tracktime you get to be honest, £55 gets you into one of the open pit day sessions (for comparison, the evenings I've done I think we did 28 fast laps, on the one open session half day I did I put in about 100 laps despite breaks and a crash). If you want top value, really the open pit days are the only option but they mix up the loons with the sane, the track bikes with the commuters... Not ideal. This is more expensive but more controlled.

Thanks. I may come along for that. What do they mean by "track bikes only"?
If you didn't really corner any faster or brake any later than you would on the road, would folk get ****ed off with you? I'd like to do a track day and get the benefits involved, but my bike is still relatively new what puts me off is I really don't want the upset nor the expense of binning it.
Can you turn up and pay on the gate once you know if the weather is dry? Does it cost anything to come and watch and get a feel for how it all works?
Do they insist on leathers and race boots, or are my usual textiles and aqua boots OK?
Sorry for the spanish inquisition :silent:
EDIT: Sorry, scratch all that. I found the FAQ page. I can't do it I don't have leathers. Might come up and say hello though if the weathers good.

That's weird, I'm pretty sure that should say "Road bikes only", they'd have to be mental to run a novice session with track bikes only :smt101 I'll drop them a wee email.
But aye, to answer the questions anyway, you need full leathers, either zip together or one-piece. Personally I'd feel safer in my Wolf leather-and-textile bottoms and Furygan leather jacket that don't zip together than I do in my cheapy FT suit, but that's by the by. Race boots not needed but if you turned up in flipflops I think they'll have some words. In theory you can book on the night but they do often sell out, me and Ianofbhills turned up for one and there were only advanced spaces, to which we said "b****r that"
(if I end up not going and there's anyone else who thinks they're my shape, let me know, my FT suit is already nicely crashed in so you'd be welcome to a lend- if you kill it you pay for it but if it gets a wee bit more scratched up, I don't really care)
You really can go out and ride as slow as you want... It might **** people off, but that's their problem. You're very unlikely to really slow anyone down, the only bad ones are the people on big bikes who can't corner as they're so unpredictable in bends but you can't pass them on the straights, I hate that. But it's the job of the person behind to pass, it's never your job to worry about the person behind. This is more or less what novice is for. You'd annoy people more by crashing and red flagging the session- that's one downer of these small sessions, you only get 4 or at most 5 sessions, so if one or more gets redflagged you lose a lot of time.
Viewing is free. Though frankly it's a wee bit boring. When we last did a real Ecosse track evening (couple of years ago) I think there were about 15 people there but only 5 on track.

Thanks for all the info Northy. The FAQ explains a "track bike" as being anything with lights and a sidestand, as opposed to a full on race bike, which are not allowed. It also says you can hire leathers, but I intend to buy some this summer so I can wait.

We keep banging on and on about it for a reason, but here we go again........
I'm in the same boat as you - the bike (to me at least) is still pretty knew and expensive, so I don't want.....
the upset nor the expense of binning it.
Quedos is the same.
We'd recommend the Ron Haslam Race School at Donington (and will keep doing so until you're all sick hearing about it!). You could easily book for one of the sessions there, book a cheap return flight into East Midlands airport and do it in a day.
No leathers required.
No Gloves required
No Helmet required
No BIKE required
No Obscene insurance fees required etc - we watched a couple of fellas bin CBR600s & blades, and once they had been dusted down and checked by the medics, were given fresh bikes and sent back out (as long as that's what they wanted).
Top jolly that one! - We're going back again this year\\:D/
Cheers,
Garry;)

Thanks for the info, it does sound great. Trouble is great things cost great money!
I can spend 45 quid at the drop of a hat and just get a :| when I tell the wife. Just have to be be careful not to bin it, (i.e. stick to the speeds and lean angles I already know I can control).
£269 for a half day tutition, plus travel costs needs justifying to the wife :smt035. It would have to be a combined birthday and xmas present and theres other stuff I want for those, i.e. new boots, tail tidy, undertray, hugger, leathers....

The ron haslam day is a good one and is worth the money, i intend on doing it again this summer. Yeah you do use their bikes but if you do bin their cbr6 that's the end of your day, you're not allowed out on the track again. It's their way of getting people not to crash

They run a few sessions throughout the day, you only really get a couple of hours on the track, my session started at 2pm and i was on my way home at about 6.30 after the debrief

And no refund pro rata for the time lost? If thats the case I won't be doing it.
Ron Haslam Race School. They are teaching you a new skill of riding fast round a track, therefore you are there to push yourself a little doing something your not used to, under their instruction and guidance. I'm not paying 270 quid to be told its the end of the day if I crash in the first half hour.
Can you imagine how popular a DAS school would be if they said, sorry, we can't teach you any more 'cos you dropped the bike, but no refunds sorry.
They should equip them with crash protection, custom built if necessary, and accept that its a risk of the business.
the ron haslam school sounds good but I dont like the idea of learning to ride a completely different bike so I wont be bothering. plus at £200+ dearer than knockers ill stick to what I know ;)

Nope no refund. You can really push the cbr600rr without crashing it though, i wasn't eaxactly hanging about on it and didn't come any where near crashing. There were 3 people in my group that binned it and all 3 were lowsides as they were trying to get their knee down.
They do accept that is a risk but try to minimise the risk of getting their bikes totalled by using the threat of ending your day if you bin it.

Ah yeah... If I can't make it, my bike cam will be going spare- I've got a mount to fit it to the mirror of a curvy so if anyone wants a lend for the track night (or in fact for anything else) just give us a shout and you're welcome to a go. Or for any other bike in fact, I can knock up a bracket for it in about 20 minutes if I don't bother taking the sharp edges off :smt106 Otherwise, I'll have it fitted to mine.

Do you need leathers for any track days?
i was thinking of having a summer trip to the nurberg ring via a wee bit of europe, and there would be no point turnning up without leathers to be told i need them :(
yes you need leather for track. either zip together 2 piece or one piece and leather gloves

The lady on the TV weather says it's going to be like tonight. I'm going with her opinion, she has a nice smile.
On the other hand, if it's properly wet, I ain't going... Really don't see the point. Did it before and it was no fun at all. I'd sooner waste ?45 than waste ?45 and an evening. So if it turns out wet my place might be going free (if you want to pay me money that'd be fine too :) )

I'm dead serious about the wet weather comments btw, if the track looks like it'll stay wet then I'm quite happy for someone else to take my place, I'm working on the assumption that the weather will be OK but if anyone's interested in filling in if it's properly wet, let me know- I'll be popping up regardless.

Very good. I was about as fast as mould, mind... Big Daft Lad lapped me about 10 times :D Seems I no longer have the go faster urge... But it was still good, I've always thought you can enjoy a trackday and benefit from it without feeling the need to always go faster... I did overtake someone on a GSXR, but it was a girl so doesn't count
Stuartyboy didn't get on track :( Novice group was full, and advanced was practically empty. There were some very fast dudes in that novice group, and some VERY fast dudes in advanced.
Who crashed? Ah, well, that would be telling, but he did a 1.02 lap on my stopwatch the lap before... We demand PICS!
I may have a few pics and a very short video, but the video camera kept crashing. Vibrations I think, I had it on the fork leg.

Nice pic's Northy. I'd have got a couple of you, but my camera needs a new battery, it was in my tank bag and everytime the camera gets cold the battery just dies completely! It was fully charged last week.
I wondered who was beeping at the Echline roundabout, didn't see you 'til the last minute. I waved once I saw you but I think you were off back down the slip road by that point.
glad you had fun. 1.02 thats shifting a wee bit. a good 20 seconds faster than me, not that that means much lol

No worries, there would have been no exciting ones anyway :smt002 I have pics of me doing a reasonable pace on the hill, I don't need ones of me being a big coward :D It was good to meet you, I was probably a bit distracted so apologies if I was antisocial (couldn't remember your name 2 seconds after you told me!)
but i had been thinking of goving a track night a go, but though i wouldnt be keeping pace with the guys that were out last night! maybe need to do the intro to trackdays first!
You should give it a crack... It's not a race, you can do a road pace like I did last night and nobody's going to laugh at you. To your face at least  but it's still good fun. And it does make you better and more confident, the main reason I did it last night is I've been having confidence problems in right handers, and Knockhill has loads of 'em, so it's a great way to work out some kinks.
Ian's spot on, there were some people in that group that had no place being in Novice- fair enough, there was no Intermediate but I reckon the organisers should have bumped some of those guys up- they'd have been slow for advanced but the group was so small it probably wouldn't have been an issue. There were a few folks unhappy about that, personally I was fine with it as the fast guys were usually pretty considerate on passes but in Novice confidence is the biggest issue usually and it doesn't help if you feel like you're being buzzed constantly.
And yes, **** me it was cold. At the end I was talking to Ralph, and my face had frozen up, I couldn't speak properly

What a night! Couldn’t believe it was dry and then the sun even came out! I had a ball, I did a couple of track mornings, last year and didn’t really enjoy them but last night I loved it. I’m still buzzin!. It really frustrating riding an SV sometimes though, the speed of even a sports 600 on the straights if amazing.

Good spot malks, though it just shows 2 groups now. Also there's spaces in the later May track morning in all groups now as well. Think I'll book into the evening one again, I've got to try and sort my game out ;)
How many people where on the track in each sesion in the last track night?
What i am getting at is it quite easy to get some free track without someone down your neck?

Quite a few... It did get a little crowded at times if people of different speeds all happened to meet up at the same time, but not so much as to be troublesome.
i think i'm going to have to go for the track morning later in may! was so close to booking the track night on the 19th but just remembered i have an exam on the 20th! not saying i'm going to throw it into the gravel or what, but prob not worth the risk.
on a side note anyone any idea how much it is to hire the place out for a night for a group? eg how many do you need to make it viable to do a private booking of the track??
oh and did someone say to knockhill to change the website? as its been fixed now!

Can't hurt to ask. Though I expect the answer is "quite a lot", they take probably 2-3 grand in a well booked track morning...

back in the day when Alvins still existed and they had a club, they used to book it for ?1500 for an evening - the last one that they did killed the club as not enough people subscribed and it had to come out of the till...
iam booked track too we subsidised costs by having colin mcrae and colin edwards with us lol

The Price list
http://www.knockhill.com/corporate/venuehire.php
Evening 2 Hours £1,500.00
So if you could get 30 SV's together it would cost £50 a bike.

I'm in!
cheers for putting that info up. if 30 people were for it then it would be quite reasonable! i'm pretty sur ei could rope in a few people that wanted to go. imagine it would be better that you could put people into similar paced groups etc...
i'm still waiting on an e-mail back from knockhill, few more bits of info i'm wanting to find out. how much of a deposit is needed, who is overall responsible on the night (eg if i book it if someone crashes can they am i liable for insurances etc...) do they provide pace cars like there track evening??? once i find out the details i may be tempted to try and organise something. i'm seeing a little bit of interest so far from here

If you need any help PM me.
i did a couple of private track nights at knockhill with IAM. there were no pace cars. and a few people had textiles on. If you did organise this you would need money up front from people as people say they are interested but then back out leaving organiser with a huge bill.
