some people prefer the rear but i'd say the fronts are much better...

I think you should stick with the brakes that are on there. Maybe get some good pads (EBC HH pads?) and some braided hoses?

Trust me unless your bike is being ridden by John McGuinness at weekend or you are a really good track rider. You will never come to the point where your sv's brakes arn't good enough. I would just upgrade the hoses to Goodridge or HEL and put on some decent pads i.e EBC HH. make sure you bleed them good and you will notice a 100% improvement.

Or if you really want more powerful brakes pm me about my adapter plates so you can use GSXR brakes on your SV ;-)

Does John McGuinness ride slower from Monday to Friday?

Just got mine back from the garage with braided hoses and it's chalk and cheese to the how it went to the garage..

(But: they also did new caliper seal sets all round, new master cylinder, new fluid front and rear and new pads at the back. I'm guessing they all helped the feel, but I know the hoses made all the difference on my Spitfire so I'm guessing they are a lot of the difference noticed)

nowt wrong with the SV brakes, it's the forks that are weak

+ 1, the SV brakes are fully up to the job (especially with braided lines).

how difficult a job is it for swapping hoses?

Can you explain this a bit more please? :smt017 Previous points last week and the week before I was having to adjust my braking points for corners as there was little response compared to Gixxer and CBR brakes that I have used...And also discussed on another thread yesterday, a few were saying how pants the brakes feel. Uprating them is the best idea. (Then again, my brakes are probs just fooked)

The SV's brakes are not powerful enough IMHO.

EDIT: But also as said, the SV is a budget bike.

Braided hoses are a nice thing to have. I would never suggest someone replaces old rubber lines with new rubber lines as they're expensive, but having changed to braided lines on my 2001 ZX6R I can honestly say they've made very little difference.

A lot of people replace the brake pads, rebuild the brake caliper so it's working properly, change the brake lines, the brake fluid and bleed the system, then say that the braided lines have improved the brakes. A lot of the time it's the gummed up calipers, shot pads, or old fluid holding you back.

I changed my pads recently, put in EBC organic pads. They give alot more power and feel over the previous (OEM) pads, which were admittedly shot and useless. I have braided hoses waiting at home, and I'm only putting on braided ones because I needed new hoses anyway (the original ones are still on there). I'm hoping new hoses will help with the initial bite, but I'm not expecting much.

Easier than you think to be honest Paul, start at the bottom so all the fluid drains out down there away from you body work and then remove the upper bolts and of course the splitter on the bottom yoke (remove OEM lines in one piece).

If you are accident prone I would recommend you put a piece of wood or plastic between the brake lever and twist grip, this will stop you accidentally pushing the brake lever in and dripping fluid everywhere out of the master cylinder.

Bolt on the new lines using new copper washers (and the stanless banjo's supplied with the line, check first that the banjo bolt going into the mastercylinder is a finer thread than the ones that go into the calipers!). Top up the resevoir and start bleeding the brakes, bleed for the banjo bolts to if the brake still feels a little soggy after doing all this!
