Meet 'Lion Star' - otherwise known as Daz, 'The Big Dog' or Cripple.;)

There is a riding school/rescue centre where I help out. They had a fire early in Feb destroying a barn and some of the stables - HERE (http://www.comancheequestrian.com/) - so everyone's out in the fields getting extra muddy.
Daz was the only horse there who isn't part of the centre, but is on livery. Then his 'owner' (and I use the term loosely here) started coming over less and less and now hasn't been seen for nearly two months and he last contact was a text three weeks ago.
It's feckin' snowed since then!:smt092
He was originally saved from goign to the meat man, and we think she has some idea he was going to be a dream horse and a real rags to riches story - she saves him and then goes on to be some fantastic showjumping champion or something.
Only she then discovers not only had he got a mild respiratory problem, but he's suffered severe tendon damage to both hind legs, and on the near side it was pretty much severed!
Badly treated and not really a riding prospect...
... so she loses interest (or something, hasn't been in touch to find out )...
... and he drops condition. He's a pure Thoroughbred - so needs a lot of TLC, mental stimulation and care as having to be out 24/7 he'll lose weight at the drop of a hat.
She'd not been to feed him, rug him up when it got colder - nothing. He's turning into a rescue case by default and the owners of the centre have been feeding him instead and using rugs off thier own horses.
But with a lot of kit lost in the fire, it's become a bit of a lottery at times to see who gets what. Espescially as Daz is a shade over 17 hh (5'8 1/2" at the shoulder to the uninitiated) so such a big lad there is little available that fits him.
As a couple of cripples we've kinda bonded so he's become my fosterling. At least now he's putting on a bit of weight:

As a single cylinder, single horsepower model goes, it's a bit tall but pulls well in first gear.

You'll be out of luck with that, I dont think givi do a monorack yet to take a topbox. Once again, my ride remains very practicle whilst being fun at the same time.
Although I'm sure Givi can sort something out for you :D
On topic now; its a beautiful horse. I'm a little wary of horses, they are pretty powerfull but a little jumpy, but in the couple of times I've ridden them I've thouroulgy enjoyed it - theres something pretty awesome about riding a horse.

Oh, will you be riding him along to the AR08? :D
The rear shocks are as dodgy as hell so riding is out of the question at the moment - unless you want the backend wallowing out on you every now and then. ;)
Kinda means that I'm 'doing a Kwak' at the moment and spending most of my time cleaning and polishing.
The rope is just there for show, like a poor disc-lock, the real anti-theft device is a fully installed bag of nerves round strangers, or even anyone who has been out of his sight for about ten minutes.
I must have one of those tags installed that they put on cat collars to open the cat-flap cos it allows me to get close.
Need to try Super-Plus rather than regular fuel for better economy though. ;)
I see from photo's 1 & 2 you've gone from full Faired to a naked version in photo 3.
It's a clever design see - couple of clips, couple of buckles and baddabing, bob's your uncle, job done n all that. ;)
Another reason I can't put it on the road yet is that the tyres have no tread on them, but at least that means there's also no nails in there. :p
I wonder how long we can keep the horse/bike comparisons going? ;)
Hi
I had to give up horse riding/owning a few month ago because my back pain was getting too much. It wasn't fun anymore.
I've sold some of my tack but still have a heap of odds and ends like grooming stuff, bandages, ropes, lunge, ...... left over.
Would that be any use/help to you?
If you want it, PM me your address and I'll send it.
Would be nice, if the things go to a good home.

A Horse, that is so Girly!! :D
Sounds like he has a few problems, ok, so he is not going to win the derby, but is he rideable?
And if the owner didn't want him, why not sell him/give him away rather tahn jsut neglect him? .. that is so 'wrong' :smt018 :(

He'd never get through an MOT
No Brakes
No Horn
Can't see a rear reflector, let alone lights or speedo
Kick start I presume

all depends on how excitable Daz gets...;)

It must be the pointy/curvy hybrid. Pointy at the front end but curvy at the back.

He's not rideable at the moment, apart from the loss of condition his worst hind leg can just about deal with his own weight - even though I'm not supersized, even my skinny little frame is too much for him at the moment.
A little work, a lot of patience and time - he could be up for a little light schooling or local hacking - but there's always going to be the chance that his near-hind will give way at any time. The severed tendon is healed, but poorly and the connection isn't great.
There is the remote possibility of an op to replace it with a carbonfibre weave - but it's not guarenteed to work, expensive and the trauma and recovery time needs to be weighed against his quality of life.
If life can be made as good as possible then should he be put through it just to allow for the potential to work a bit harder? It's an unknown at the moment really.
As for his absentee owner - hmmm - who knows what's going on in her mind. :silent:
The centre had found somewhere he could have gone a while ago - 100 acres, not requirement for work, just to be a companion animal - but she refused to release him. Go figure.
They are waiting to hear back from various welfare organisations with a better idea of their legal standpoint. At the moment they are stymied, they can't rehome him but refuse to let him suffer - as I say, he's becomming a rescue case by default - it's just how long it takes.

Brakes are detachable, and the horn is a fitment of the rider - both are required before being allowed on the road. Though it has got four gears (one being reverse ;)) this model isn't capable of breaking any speedlimits.
Lights not required as it's daylight use only.

Just TRY not to get too attached to him, just in case she decided to move him ... but he sounds like a 'keeper' :)
Do you have another horse he can 'companion' (and be a companion to himself)

If she shows her face round the stables for anything other than signing him over to the center, then she'll won't get a piece of my mind... I don't have enough to spare. ;)
I am not a violent person, but she runs the risk of getting a piece of something else.:smt075
I don't have a horse of my own, yet. I used to about 20 years ago, and plan on getting another before I finish my degree...
... as long as he's got some kind of secure future I'll be happy wherever he ends up - be it with me or somewhere else.
Mr Toad, :smt018 but :smt082.

Oh man - I've not seen any Thelwell stuff for aaaaages - makes me feel about 12 again!
They've got a couple of Shetland poinies that look just like that - all fuzz, beady eyes, diddy little legs and very cheeky dispositions. One of the miniatures keeps sneaking out into the yard every time we bring Grey in from the field - Grey is a rather tall 3 yr old Shire stallion and she nips out by simply keeping pace and walking under his belly!

I've went on ebay and bought it yesterday... It arrived in the post today.
Funny AS... :smt045

Oh my god, I cant believe Daz's owner has treated him that way - Id report the owner to the RSPCA and get the horse taken off him/her.
Great to see that you're taking care of him - he looks lovely :D

Absolutely nothing going on in her mind, she's off her rocker to let such a beautiful animal waste away like that :smt076
He's looking fab now though K, pat on the back for you :) (I'm sure he appreciates it too :D)
