O.k so i'm wondering, do we (bikers in general) have some sort of warning signal we give to other bikers to alert them to a police presence further down the road for instance?
I have seen several different examples including my mate doing some sort of finger in the air spinning thing which i took to mean to a u-turn, but i think it was supposed to be a spiren spinning round??
Another was some chap doing the Peter Kay "You've left your lights on!" impression.
Just thought if we all had one universal signal it would make things a lot easier....
for oncomming vechs a flash of the headlight usualy, if its for peeps behind incase they did not see them its patting on the top of the helmet, of course this can also apply to peeps comming towards you for when you have passed the plod
If you get caught, warning other road users, you can be done for "perverting the course of justice"....................so don't get caught:smt018

i use thumb down.
i use thumb down.
+1.
Either that, or flash lights (if it's a car oncoming). Or as one person witnessed last Sunday, if I know they're hidden from view of the plod, I'll use hazard lights too.

Good point, wasn't there a bloke who got done for this a while back?
I tend to wave frantically - this I'm hoping translates to the recipient as "something's wrong, somethings dangling off your bike, there's a big tractor round the next bend, there's someone lurking with a laser gun behind the bushes" etc. Either way, they hopefully slow down. And if caught "warning other road users" then I suppose you can use the defence that it's common practice for bikers to nod or give a small wave as they pass, the energy put into that wave and whether it could be considered a warning or a greeting is purely a subjective issue your honour :D

And how are they going to prove you were warning them about the police? You could have been advising them of a hazard.;)
We're always extrememly grateful to the cage drivers who warn us of problems ahead, and lots do:D
I have seen some bikers open and close there hand just on top of there lid to show the police are about so it looks like a flashing light.

Generally, I use a variant on the old "slow down" hand signal, up and down at the side but often with my left hand.
However, I feel morally obliged to point out that if you ride in such a way as to need to rely in these sorts of warnings to stay out of trouble, then perhaps you ought to think about changing your riding!!! That's fair, isn't it Officer?

i use thumb down.
+ 1 as well, some times I will flash lights if in the car.

That's the exact reason why I warn people. Usually it translates roughly to "Watch out, that cage in front of you is about to hit it's brakes!"

Round here, the thumbs down is pretty universal.
Also hand outstretched low opening closing, you have left your indicators on.
i use thumb down.

+1 to all of the above...
on the Peri track around the runway if the RAF coppers (ex Cloggsy) are about , I'll ring the Sqn Sergent Major, so he can inform all departments.

I have my eyes closed on this thread ... but I would use thumbs down myself :)
Altho I like the flashing light mimic on top of the lid :)
I generally flap my left hand in a downwards direction but a thumbs down's a good idea.

I would not dream of attempting to worn other road users that their behaviour is under scrutiny.
Some times I do get cramp when riding and have to wave my hand up and down, somethimg like a slow down signal. I often find that proximity to laser beams brings on the cramps.

I use thumbs down or pat my head. This is not to warn other road uses but simply cus I have muscle spasms occasionally!

Went to Squires nr Sherburn a few weeks ago and although 20 bikes plus were coming from Sherburn not one gestured any warning of police. Thankfully, a van driver flashed me several times and my 6th sense then told me to slow down. 300 yds on there were 3 cop bikes and a van.
I then made the slow down signal to any biker I saw before reaching Sherburn.
A few people have also told me how they've been warned by vans / cars and not by bikers.

After being flashed that many times you had to rely on a sixth sense...What about the other 5? :p
Personally i pat my helmet.

Patting the top of your helmet as well as a flash of the lights to oncomers (what I do also) are pretty much universal signs among riders I've met from around the globe.
Round these parts thumbs down means a bike is down!
Or from someone at a crash scene...a rider was injured (severely or worse).
Don't want to see a biker giving thumbs down 'round here!!!

Well I couldn't smell them, touch them, see them, hear them, or taste them so I suppose it was a 6th sense! ;)
+1 to the out stretched arm doing the slow down thingy, trouble is i get too excited and look like a 1 winged albatros attempting flight :D

That's the point of advanced training isn't it? Improve the observations and all that :-P
How are they going to do someone for making a hand signal? As surely to "pervert the course of justice" they would also have to prove the other guy was speeding before you made the signal.
I pat the top of my lid.

I do the "wave hand up and down like I'm bouncing an invisible ball" gesture, too.
Here's a question, though: how far past the police do you go before you stop warning on-coming motorists? I mean, you don't want anyone getting caught but you also don't want their ride-out being ruined by looking for a copper that's 40 miles down the road either!
A police car pull out infront of me today in Durham...
I was going to gresture a hand signal but thought better of it.
later an oncoming bikecop gave me a nod and a wave, so a nod and a wave back.
