They're looking at replacing Vista with 'Windows 7' in "the next year or so":laughat:

Wow, finally, a decent timeframe for an OS update. This will probably be out in about 2015 though...
There's an update for XP due soon that'll make it embarssingly better than Vista isn't there? Unless they nobble it I suppose

'next year or so'
I very much doubt it. Look at how many years late Vista was.

I can't believe they're writing off Vista already. I see Linus and OSX becomming big players soon...

I think the press report was inaccurate, I work closely with some internal Microsoft employees in Redmond and they were referring to internal pre-release concept products.
No more surprising than being told a car manufacturer is likely working on the details of a new car design.

Is it "Windows 2007", to be released in 2009, hence the subtraction of the first 3 characters to remove any embarrassment or raised hopes?
'apt-get loads-of-security-updates'
I dont think so.

+1.
They're actually scoping a 3year development & rollout schedule. That puts first initial beta's at roughly 2011.
The last I heard from an insider was that they were hoping to release enmass to public in 2015.
FWIW, Windows 7 will be a modular OS, and customers will be offered the opportunity to 'rent' perticular modules for a finite time. Can't say I agree with that in principal, but then, they're a business, and it does make business sense.
I do however like the look of the spec'd deployment platform they'll be using for it. Unfortunate that I know the security won't be up to what it could be, but what more can you expect from MS?

History repeating itself, dare I say Millenium ;)

i have just upgraded my main machine and put vista 64 ultimate on it due to large ram requirements. i had read all the same articals that vista is slower and bloatyer etc etc etc.
but then i remembered there was the same fuss made over xp when that came out, things didnt work right old hardware didnt work, it was bigger etc etc etc....
now having been using vista at home now for a few weeks i couldnt live without it. the instant search features are amazing, its at liest as stable as xp if not more so. i also enjoy gaming and as a platform for gaming i can honestly notice no difference in performance from xp to vista on the same hardware.
to get the to point there is nothing really wrong with vista, in the same way there is nothing really wrong with xp. there is no really good reason to upgrade but there also isnt really a good reason not to....

XP has always been better than vista anyway.

Lets see.
Windows 3.1 : Not too bad.
Windows 95 : Bad. Really quite bad.
Windows NT4 : OK.
Windows 98 : Terrible.
Windows NT5 / 2000 : Reasonable, less stable than NT4.
Windows ME : Astonishingly bad.
Windows NT6 / XP : Pretty bad.
Windows Vista : Wow.
I wonder... how is Windows 7 going to be?
I'd say, given the history of MS operating systems, it will be awful. They seem to be actually making worse operating systems as time goes on.
Honestly, what have they actually improved on since NT4?
Whats better now?
The look and feel?
Its a great car guvner, look at that paint job, touch that seat there. Wonderful.
Does it start?
Emm. Not really. It might, but it will grind to a hideous halt in a couple of hours time.
I see... I'll take it !!
Emmm. Or not.
No thanks.

Not sure I'd agree with your XP verdict, certainly XP Pro at least has been a fairly stable & simple to use OS.
I have no problem with either XP or Vista over and above any other OS. I work in a global architecture team specialising in client OS's in a 150,000 client environment. We have desktop, mobile, tablet pc etc and pretty much every usage scenario except home or gaming.
XP Pro is extremely reliable and Vista the same. This is purely about user preference and perception. I've seen it thousands of times. I can put the same image in front of two people and one hates it while the other loves it. You can never please everybody.
Damn, I really didnt want to slip any work stuff into my forum activity as this is meant to be a skive :-)
This might sound like a cop out but you'll have to trust me. 98% of all the issues we come across (and MS for that matter) are 3rd party driver related. There are literally hundreds of thousands of drivers around and many of them are not developed anywhere close to the standards that the OS code is, honestly, I've seen the reports from the crash dumps.
I've dubbugged loads of blue screens and hangs and without fail, it always comes down to some daft driver that got installed. Occasionally its one that shipped with the OS but thats pretty rare.
But the question still remains, should i upgrade from Windows 3.1?

one thing is for sure if you upgrade the OS then make sure you upgrade your hardware as the new OS need 100TB of hard drive space 100GB of memory and 50000MHZ processors before they will work, thats before you install any kind of programs or games
