nope, and i never would.

My moms cousin is a magician who used to do hypnosis in his show. hes good, got his own TV show in South Africa. But he stopped as he relised that he didnt know what he was doing, and that noone actaully knows what they are doing.

They understand that this action causes that responce, but that is is, there is no knowledge of how.

That to me is scary, my brain is too important to be messed with. Why pay someone to mess with it, especially if youve got an expensive lid! ;)

A former work colleague who had recently qualified offered me treatment some years ago.It was to get me off the cigs.I have to say that it worked incredibly well.

+1 my exs Dad used it to stop smoking and it worked really well for him.

(this is not in contradiction to my previous post, I still would not do it)

What's it for?
There's NO risk to your brain whatsoever.

there might not be, but that dosent meen to say that there is none.

It is was such a fool proof thing, and if it was actually understood, dont you think the government would offer it as a treatment for smoking?

I had this debate about diet pills, if they worked, dont you think everyone would use them and there would be no fat people!?

The government don't use it for many reasons. Diet pills are effectively speed; that's why everyone isn't on them.
I've had a lot of involvement in this field so feel suitably qualified to comment.

Hypnotherapy doesn't work on everyone, iirc. Also, if it's something you really don't want to do, hypnotherapy can't make you do it. So it won't work to help you give something if you don't really want to.

Yes, went to the same person my husband went to in order to quit smoking.
He's stopped for over 5 years and I still smoke on and off :(

... And say if you use hypnotherapy to quit smoking, I think it's a way to make the whole giving up process easier.

I think it works for some people, but ultimately if you're using it to do something like stop smoking you need to want to give up in the first place.

edit: Famin_Squirrel beat me to it :)

I tried it a few times to help me, but it didn't work for me. Some people it works for, some people it doesn't. It may work for you. Even if it helps you through the placebo effect, then it's achieved something. I'd go for it if I were you - if you don't like it, don't go back.

As long as you don't get this dude...."Look into my eyes, look into my eyes, the eyes, the eyes, not around the eyes, don't look around the eyes..." :smt119

Seriously though, if you read around and research it a bit then might be worth a try or you could just try the old will power trick and substitute the mars bars for something a bit healthier like a brunchbar or summat. Obviously I'm not saying one should quit the chocolate as that would just be plain silly as well as a crime :smt040

Lmao!

Well it's supposed to work, there's one that comes to uni occasionally who always seems to be really popular but then I guess that's mainly a performance thing. I'm assuming the hypnotism that goes on in shows etc different to the hypnotism for health problems, addictions and such?

I wouldn't get involved in any of the circus-trickery type of hypnosis, but 1:1 with a qualified, reputable practitioner can work. Basically, they use a relaxation technique coupled with a 'memory-jogger' to train yourself not to repeat habitual behaviour - it's about unlearning stuff. Works for some, but not others.
I'm not a fan of NLP, but that uses some of the same techniques.

True. I went for some to give up fags and it turns out I'm too strong willed to be hypnotised.

Mind you it could have been the whinging, monotonous tone of the bloke trying to be "soothing"! :)

Only works on "suggestable" people accordingly.

Do you think I could get someone to hypnotise me into thinking that my OH's snoring is lovely and soothing and in fact will help me to get to sleep, just like, say a nice wee cat purring sweetly or something...Since being diagnosed as having an underactive thyroid its been like sleeping next to a nest of angry hippos!!!!
