It connects to the battery to stop it loosing charge if a car/bike is off the road for a while. Its like a recharger, but just stops the battery loosing charge so quickly.

Can't remember for the life of me what its called, anyone help?

The Optimate is the trade name for a conditioner/trickle charger; so 3 replies - 1 answer just by different names!

I'd say it was 2 answers ;)

A trickle charger is normally a 'dumb' charger, it will just keep charging whatever state the battery is in, leave it on for a week and the battery will probably go BANG  A conditioner or optimate/acumate/Oximizer (those 3 are indeed brand names) etc are intelligent chargers that sense the state of the battery and charge accordingly. These sort of 'intelligent' chargers can be left on 24/7 without the risk of damage and will maintain the battery at full charge, so it will always be ready to go 8)

Your mum wants to get an Optimate (or its equivalent) dude

And if she is feeling generous, I would recommend the wall bracket too ;).
Much better option than the floor/balanced on seat etc.
