Am just after some opinions here cos i haven`t got a clue :D
My son`s birthday is coming up and I`m buying him a tv (prob 37" or 40") the tv will mainly be used for his X box games so am wondering whether plasma or LCD would be best for this kind of use.
Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks Kwak... and thats the sort of price I was roughly expecting to pay. So is LCD better than plasma for the xbox games?

Any brand name LCD with HDMI that is on a good offer.
We have sony bravia, philips and samsung. Samsung has rubbish sound, pictures good on all of them.

dunno about that but you will pay more for plasma, ive had a few things off ebuyer and they seem like a good company with no problems.

I have a Sharp Aquos Screen that displays 1080p HDTV and the picture is amazing , it`s LCD and nowadays they are good enough for gaming on any of the new consoles .

+1, I have a 32" samsung and is fine for xbox. I've heard a few people mention bad sound but I can't find anything wrong with mine. I'd go for lcd over plasma.

I'd buy him a pushbike, a rugby ball and some boxing gloves, not endorse that he sits at home with an X-box!!
Anyway, to actually answer your question ... I am no expert in this area -but a mate is, I seem to recall him saying something like you can experience 'ghosting' with some LCDs and High Definition TV/gaming can't you?
Someone expand on this for me plz!! 8)

lol.. a pushbike (he wouldn`t thank me) a rugby ball he`d probs throw at me and boxing gloves i`d be tempted to use and throw a punch when he next comes home drunk dressed in an inflatable 3 foot wide buzz lightyear suit and can`t get thru the front door without being deflated!!
In honesty I don`t like the fact he spends so much time in his room gaming but he`s old enough to do his own thing and he`s only home every other month so I shouldn`t complain
Big thanks everyone for all your help

The ghosting is reffering to the refresh rate of OLD LCD Tv`s . Anything that refreshes the screen at 16 milliseconds or under is adequate for fast moving games . The old ones (around 21 Milliseconds) used to almost display 2 images , that`s what caused the ghosting or blurred effect . You would be hard pushed to get one like this now , unless that is you buy one from Argos for under 200 quid LOL .
LCD has overtaken Plasma in the benefits stakes now , and as others have said , you can`t go wrong with a Samsung , the BDX in Black is a nice TV .

Ghosting is caused by the persistence of illumination of the pixels in LCD tellys. Thus with fast moving objects such as motor racing, race games etc, you can get a (barely) discernible trail behind the object. Also LCDs tend to have a blurring of the background in sports type programs where the camera is following the ball - up to you if this is an issue. All of the above are more evident in HD mode.
The big downside of plasma tellys is 'burn-in' where if you leave an image on the screen for a long time it can 'etch' itself to the screen and leave a permanent ghost of the image visible. This is a problem for those who pause a game and then forget about it..
I watched LCD and Plasma side by side using a DVD of the type of thing we like to watch (motorsport, paddle sports, action movies) and decided that plasma was a better display for us.

PLasma not so good for gaming, i think they are more prone to image burning.
My brother has a toshiba LCD tv (HD, 1080p) in the size you are looking for; he runs his Xbox 360 on it...it looks brilliant

General Rule of thumb is that LCD is best for anything upto 37"
Larger than that you should go for Plasma.
I agree with the screen burn thing. LCD is always better for gaming

Good plan... he`s actually still away for his birthday and won`t be home til the following week... i`ll stack all the dishes and leave them for him for his return :smt041

So by the sounds of it I should go for a 37" LCD... he does tend to pause the games and go off and do something else. Just wish there wasn`t so much choice out there

How old is the lad?
I can't make out if he is nearer 13 or 31!! :D
This would have a direct bearing on how much he needs slapping about by his mum to get him into shape/line!! :D
