Save a grand or so an get a Z750

According to one dealers site "90% of the Z1000 for 75% of the price"

Not that I am biased of course

Nah, while I think it does look gorgeous it would be no different to my Hornet is terms of performance. Need something a little more pokey.

Z1000 looks the same TBH - well except for the dual cans and the integrated indy's, which if you didnt want, I would possibly be interested in swapping for (as long as you got a black one :P)

I considered the thou, but the extra cost of insurance put me off, the extra cost of the bike was not THAT big an issue, but I didnt really feel that it was worth the extra. (and that £500 of the extra could go towards improving the suspension to a level beyond that of stock Z1000)

I do see where you are coming from. But after having riddent he Z750 and owned 2 Z1000's I think, while the difference are not huge, it's partly an image thing with the Zed1000. It's such an iconic bike. If I didn't have teh Hornet I would definately be looking at a Z750 though.

I am indeed a tart. This would only be reinforced if you met me!

All the write-ups of the Zed say it's damn good on the road. Still, not sure. Big naked or SS600 (just one that's not as focused as the ZX6R was).

The only differences are the indy's the twin cans and the suspension (maybe another couple of little things I am missing - like the intrument panel and cowl surrounding it)

The 08 Z750 has the same engine (sleeved down)

I think the actual finish/build quality is the same - probably exactly the same in so many ways, due to them sharing the frame, so I would assume rear plastics and tank.

When I compared my zed to a 750 it defo looked like more effort had gone in to little finishing touches. Can't think of what offhand but 750 defo looked more budget.

Lol - really looking forwards to meeting you - have been enjoying our discussions on our disparate views on the Hornet :P

I think that ALL of the current SS600's are too focused - one of my original criteria (that I abandoned) was that I wanted a fairing.

So a Zed of soem description it is then - see sorted for ya.

...and just whats wrong with black :smt009. The only problem with the blue is it will may turn out like the purple blades of the 80s (sorry numbers ;))

...skip the 600s and the Zds - been there done that. Try the Tuono and decide between that and the 675.

Oh and the other one no one has mentioned is the KTM690 SMC (smaller duke looking thing) - not sure if you've been to the new KTM dealer in Bracknell but some tasty toys in there.

Still think you should keep the hornet and get a DR...

Get a used speed triple for less than a street triple. Goes like stink, handles nicely and completely different to the Hornet. What's more you can add as much bling as you like or even get a pre-blinged one if you fancy. Unless it's been overly "enhanced" by the previous owner they seem so go, stop and steer pretty much spot-on straight from the show room.

Else the GSX-R 750 is a sensible buy, but probably a bit too sensible for someone as non-sensible as your good self.

Mate of mine has an X-11. Complete hooligan of a bike and you can pretty much guarantee you'll not end up parked in a long line of them at box-hill or Newlands like you will if you get a recent sports 600/thou.

Or how about going the more classic route. Nice naked bike with clip-ons and go for the cafe-racer look. All the fun but about 50mph slower :)

However I'm off for a blast on a Ducati 1098 shortly so I'm sure my opinion of what constitutes a decent bike will swing towards Italy shortly.

Just get as many test-rides booked on as many bikes as you can. Even if you end up buying nothing, test rides are always a laugh. Reading Honda and Moto select in Farnham are always accommodating if you fancy Honda.

Okay, I have 3 finalists:

1. 2008 Honda Hornet 600. I would of course sell my current Hornet and have this as my only bike. Only £5'500 new so a pretty good option.

2. 2006/7 Speed Triple 1050. Mad bike which goes like stink but high insurance and licence losing potential (with me riding).:smt077

3. 2006 Gixxer 600. 2nd hand bargain at £5'000 with around 2'000 and trick bits thanks to previous. Much more comfy than the ZX6R. Only downside is every fecker has one.

At the moment I am steering towards a new Hornet. Does everything well and the new looks are pretty nice in black. Also it's the most econimcal and sensible solution as this would be my only bike.

Have you tried the new Z750/Z1000 ????

Seriously, I am not just doing my usual Zeds rule/Hornets suck thing.

I am not saying that the 07 Hornet I had was in the best condition - it was definatley abused by a previous hirer, so servicing may have suffered as well.

The Z750 would cost you less - I think ?5k should get you a non-ABS one (P&H @ Crawley had the ABS ones on display at ?5400, ABS is a ?350 option)

End of the day its your choice and you know what you like/want and have much more experience on bikes than me but thats my opinion :P

Mark_h
12-04-08, 10:07 AM
So why not save the 5k and keep your current hornet that you know, love and trust? What does it not do that a new one would apart from leave you c£5k down?

Not sure about the build quality of the Kwaks for all weather use Soulkiss. They are not as good as the Honda's and I ride all through winter. Been through 2 winters on my Hornet and apart from rusty pillion heel plates it's pretty damn good for a 27'000 mile bike.

Mark, I just feel that my bike will be worth absolutely nothing if I keep it any longer. I know that it is mechanically sound but I think there will be very few people willing to buy a 40 - 50'000 mile bike if I were to sell next year. I reckon I could get about ?2'500 for it at the moment but that's about it. So that's almost half a new Hornet.

Well we have plenty of used everyday older Kwaks in the Soho Massive and no-one seems to complain about the build quality.

I'll let you know in a year or so how mine goes :)

TBH I am happy with the quality of the finish on mine, and its done just under 1100 miles in a month and a half.

Let me know. For example I bought a new ZX6R last August, had it 6 months and rode it in December, Jan and Feb on occasional days. Yes, it got rained on but was garaged as well and it still corroded. Wasn't a good sign for me.:smt088

Walk away from the Gixer then..... Mine/Sam's is in a bit of a sorry state from me riding it through winter... I'm not the hottest on cleaning etc. but Fizzy's is only slightly better.

Asked about the CB1000R for Law at the Honda dealer, not expecting a launch until June time apparently...

2006 ZX6R 636.

More comfy than the new one, quicker than the new one, more torque and mide range than the new one just as good round corners.

Oh come on Dan, sod that. I see a simple solution to your quandary here. Ducati 999 - Ducati superbike for only £5k and all because everybody believes it not to be pretty enough.

Buy it, wince at the clutch rattle, grin at the back end noise for 6 months, tick Ducati ownership off the list and then flog it for £5k to someone else. You've kept bikes for less time!

It's funny isn't it...if I start talking about Ducatis i get "You don't really want a Ducati do you?" Translated into girlspeak that reads as "Ducati? Not flippin likely. You'll have another SV and be done with it, sticking the extra money you would have spent in the holiday fund."

That would be fun. Can we go to France please ET?

Only if there is sun forecast for a whole month. You know what the electrics are like on these Italian superbikes

And here is my new mode of transport.

Much stiffer suspension than the old one, perhaps due to mileage but I think the USD's are a little stiffer. Also has a digital speedo, fuel guage and no reserve tap anymore. Other than that feels the same as the last Hornet. Which is great.
