View Full Version : Newbie says Hi!
Hi,
I'm Benn and live in Tunbridge Wells. I currently don't own an SV, but I am looking hard for one at the moment, unfortunately it is taking me a little longer to get the money together as I am looking at Secondhand stuff in dealers, which I know is overpriced, but as I am a bit clueless about what to look for in a secondhand bike, so nervous about buying a bad bike, and my friends are no help either!
Anyway, I just thought I would say hello and hopefully I will be back on here with an SV soon!
Cheers
Benn
Wotcha Benn. I know a few folks in the Soho massive have bikes that may be for sale at the mo, try Teriyakimonkey (call him Teri, he likes that...) and Mr Anderson have bikes which may be going soon, or I think Law is selling his over in Guildford. What's your budget and what are you looking for?
If anyone tells you I'm a deviant, it's just because they don't understand me...

Hi Benn and welcome to the .org
you need to get yourself over to the For Sale section there has been quite a few bike up for sale to suit most budgets in there.
Happy SV hunting
Hi,
Thanks for the welcome! With regard to what I am looking for... I have a budget of around £1500 - £2000 cash wise, but if I went for a dealer model then I could go a bit higher as I can stick some of it on a credit card! Oh, and I would like an 'S'. I don't mind whether its a curvy or pointy one, but obviously the more I can get for my money the better!
I have been looking at a couple in a dealer in Tonbridge near me (Sturdeys) and they currently have a V reg Red curvy with ~12,000 miles on it for £2200, and a 53 reg Copper pointy one with 29,000 miles on it for £2400. Both look nice bikes, but do you think they are overpriced?
Thanks for pointing me in the direction of the For Sale section too, I had a good look on there last night and saw some very nice bikes, but none that were in my price range and close enough to me. Quiffs bike looks good, but Stoke is too far from me really...

Hi Ben, I'm also in tunbridge wells so maybe I'll see you around. I'd say the bikes at Sturdeys are overpriced but I always think that about dealer prices. I may have a mate who is selling his pointy s (55 plate I think) and lives in t wells too. I will ask him next week.

1st off, Welcome Benn with two ens :)
They seem a tad over priced, but about £500. A V plate for that money is shameful and wishful thinking.
You should be able to get something a lot newer for £2k I would shop around, and as said, tehre are plenty of secondhand SV's knocking aorund on these pages. Just don't buy mine!
Hi and welcome. I went to Sturdeys about 4-6 weeks ago. There was a copper SV650S coming in then. So they might have had it for a while. Just offer something ridiculous (cash) and see what they say. You don't know till you've tried. Finns is not too far away from you either. If you're not already looking on www.autotrader.co.uk (http://www.autotrader.co.uk) have a look there. :-)
Edit: this one looks good.

Chutz, thanks for letting me know about Sturdey's prices, I will keep on looking unless they have a major rethink and drop their prices right down I guess I won't be buying from them. I was a little surprised to look at private prices and discover them to be a lot lower than I had expected. I'll also have to keep an eye on the roads when I am driving / riding round town for you, it will be good to meet other bikers.
If your friend is selling his SV then I would be interested in having a look, but a 55 plate may well be above my price range.:(
Viney, thanks for the hello and advice, and just out of curiosity… why shouldn't I buy your bike?
Wow, that SV at Aardvark looks nice, thanks for pointing me in their direction, I haven't heard of them before, so definitely take a wander down there one Saturday to have a look at what they have in there, and the price seems much nicer too! :) I think the copper 650 in Sturdeys must be the same one they have had for a while, they still haven't cleaned it up yet either so I guess that could give me some bartering potential…
Viney, thanks for the hello and advice, and just out of curiosity… why shouldn't I buy your bike?:confused:Becaue A) its not for sale B) Its a shed c) its done over 55000 miles d) the gearbox is shagged and so is the clutch.
On the upside its ultra reliable and to date other than 2 rectifiers, never let me down and im gonn miss her when i have to start commuting by train :(
aardvarks is a good place. I bought my R1 there for a pretty good price and the bloke seems very straightforward and just a keen biker really. Happy hunting. I will see my mate in the next week or so at work so will ask him and the all important question of price.

Cool, thanks for the clarity... Its nice to know that they do over 30k and so me looking at ones that are on 25k is not too stupid!
It'll do whey more than that. RandyO in the US, has well over 140,000 miles on his SV!!
Pleanty on here over the 50k as well. You just have to look after them.
Hi everyone, I just thought I would say hi again now that I have finally put a deposit down on an SV! I am so excited, I really can't wait to pick it up!
I look forward to meeting up with you sometime in the near, and please excuse the stupid questions I am bound to start coming out with... :-s
deposit? Where and what mate? I hope it's the faster colour...:smt021

Down at Aardvark in Hailsham. Its a naked blue K3... :smt031
Ow do n Welcome, nice looking velocopede you got there.
that looks very much like my old sv!!! I put the renthalls on, the black mirrors, k+n filter, carbob can company exhaust and gixxer thou rear shock. How much did you pay for it? It's done a lot of miles but still a good bike I expect.
Cool, I paid 1995 for it, it looks in good nick, and goes well. The mileage was a slight concern, but it looks like it has been well cared for, so I thought I would give it a go... lease don't tell me any horror stories now!
1st service done by dealer, I changed oil and filter every 4,000 miles, valve clearances were done around 2k miles ago I think (bloke I sold it to did 'em). I used it to do a 30 mile commute twice a day so all good long runs really.
Only let me down once and that was an ht lead.(You'll find there's an extra one as it was simpler to run another one in than replace the dodgy one).
You'll have to bring her over to me so I can catch up with the old girl:)
Definitely. It will be good for you to have a look over her for me! Thanks for letting me know about it. It is nice to know its not a bad bike. I'll be using it for my 20 mile each way commute and fun of course.
Oh, and you don't happen to have a 'show' plate hanging around for her do you by any chance to save me having to buy a new one? ;)
What are you riding now then Chutz?
"show plate"? Not sure what you mean but I don't have one. I do have most of the service manual printed out and another gixxer shock if you want 'em.
I have a k3 R1 now. Silver and black so if you see one around tunbridge wells give me a wave. I'll be looking out for you on your lovely blue sv dude.
By show plate, I just meant a smaller than standard one, which will of course be for use when I am not using the bike on the road...
I'll keep an eye out for you around town. I haven't seen an R1 yet, but now I have something to look for I will keep an eye out. I am still in my car for the next couple of weeks though until I pick up the SV... It is going to be a long wait!
The service manual would be brilliant if you still have it lying around, as would anything else that may be of some use. Thanks very much.
So, where, when and what music do you play?
mainly write and record stuff at home these days. The High Brooms tavern has a jam night every 4th thursday of the month and I played there last month for a giggle.
I'll sort the manual out for you mate. I still have some receipts for parts etc for the sv too I think so will bundle it all up. Whereabouts in t wells are you? I'm off to France tonight for the motogp in Le Mans so maybe I'll get the stuff ready for you next week.
I'm up on Forest Road, i'm in the flats on the bayham road crossroads near the frant road end... i hopethat makes sense, it does in my head!
Anything you have got for the SV would be brilliant thanks, there is no rush at the moment as I haven't got the bike yet.
