So, you've got your sandwiches, a can of coke, a map and maybe a jumper. So what the hell else do these nutcases carry?!

I'll see troops of 10 or so ramblers all with massive rucksacks out on a day trip. I carried less when I went away for a year!

I really don't get why they use telescopic sticks either. Maybe because of the weight of those huge bloody bags

they're used to wave at, and if they get in range poke, the oiks on horses and bikes who have the nerve to use the ~2% of the bridleway system you don't have exclusive access to...

lampshade, coatstand, large umbrella.....oh sorry wrong type of bag!
Erm well waterproofs can take up a lot of room I guess, if some of them are birders too then they may be carrying a telescope of some description. Maybe a three course meal complete with giant flask of tea?

Saying that he has a tent/sleeping bag with him so dunno.

Do you think you get the rambler equivalents of weekend warriors?

Me too, love going out in me waterproof hiking boots and splashing in all the puddles and rivers :D

When I say like weekend warriors, I mean those that not only just wait for the fair weather but they splash out on all the top quality walking gear, goretex etc. and then don't even use it for its proper purpose!!

We know a rambler who is a social worker, she's the most boring person I've ever met and has all her pics of various walks on DVD. If we're round at theirs she'll stick one on the telly while we're talking and then start a running commentary as she flicks through them. If I see one more pic of her in a floppy hat squinting up at the camera on her lonesome I'll probably slot her...

Social workers all seem a bit odd, any of them that I've met anyway. I certainly wouldn't risk going into one of their houses!! :-P
