Rather random, but funny :-)

How's about if your panniers or "I wish I was rogering Charlie Boormans missus" social airs cause you to filter at 3mph, then at least have the decency to get out of my f###in way! :-D

I had a right loud "discussion" with a GS rider who almost took me out, pulling across in front of me to then turn left.
When I let him know my opinion of his riding, he pulled a warrant card on me and tried to caution me! I nearly fell over laughing 'cos he was an old office plastic cop and couldn't remember it!
Put him right where he belonged. :smt014

Do you HAVE to wear the Ewan and Charley overpriced BMW garb with them?
I overtook a group of riders in full offroad kit on GS BMWs..... on a firetrack....on an SVS....in race leathers  I'd love to have seen their faces.

There are 'undreds of BMW bikes around Surbiton. I see them so often. Bumped into a guy at Newlands on a GS on Saturday- there was only him and a harley rider at the place at 11:30, so we had a quick chat and he headed off to Boxhill.
Then a guy stopped on a R1200 RT- he looked at my battle scarred SV and said 'nice bike'.
I was gobsmacked- didn't expect that and just didn't have a reply- just said cheers. Wanted to return the compliment, but didn't quite know how to other than, 'that looks like a bit of a beast'! (in a complimentary way).
I have to say though- far more pleasant to chat to than I'd expect from many BMW car drivers around here!!!
A mate of mine wants to get rid of his Ninja and get a Beemer again- the Ninja's too quick for him and I think he wants to go for 'steady comfort'! They're nice bikes- but not for me for a while...!

The GS, in all sizes, has always been a great bike, it has rather suffered from the 'Ewan 'n Charlie effect' though.
Buy a plain Jane R1200 instead, the same mechanicals where it matters and a big chunk cheaper, or an R1100S/1200S, fantastic motorbike. Despite what people might think it's quicker than you are*.
PS. Anyone that thinks they're old man's bikes clearly ain't ridden a recent one.
*Like just about every modern bike.

I got overtaken going up Hartside by a bloke on a GS who pretty much had the panniers scraping on the floor! He was nearly going as quick as Amarko!

You cheeky beggars!
Go back to your sore backs from hugging your petrol tanks on a motorway.
You're only jealous that top-boxes make the sv look ghey! Whilst a GS can pull it off nicely.

All fair points- it's just the image, I think!
Rode an F650CS for my DAS- very cosy, but not the most exciting bike in the world. My mate had the F650CS before he got the Ninja and decided he wasn't able to control the throttle well enough to keep his licence long term
Like the KTM's though, I find the styling a little too linear.

I ride a 1200 GS (as well as a naked SV Thou)
(1) I DON'T wear BMW gear - I looked at it, it's good kit but I got a sweet deal on some Rukka gear instead.
(2) I DON'T filter at 3 mph - in many ways it's a better bike for filtering than the SV because it has a far tighter turning circle that allows me to change lanes between vehicles if the gap 'closes'.
(3) Why would I want to buy an SV 650 instead of a 1200 GS - just to save some money - totally different bikes ???
(4) There ARE many faster bikes (and riders) on the road - the GS isn't designed for 'balls out' riding - just for quick, comfortable mile munching - although, if the 'red mist' descends . . .
. . . well, you might like to ask some of the org-ans who attended last years Org Goes To France day what the result can be !! :p

I was in Alaska for 2 months last summer and I got a loan of an 1100GS for a week - rode it from fairbanks (in the middle) to deadhorse (right up north) about 300 miles inside the arctic circle - pretty much as far as you can go by road there.
What alaskans call roads are frankly laughable by our standards - even ther good ones - due to yearly permafrost damage and the fact they hate paying tax. The last 200 miles or so were pretty much dirt track. Didn't get so much as a sore bum on the GS -awesome bike when its in its element.
Did I mention they make great beer out there too?
got about half a million pics of the trip if anyone's interested

I think the GS looks ok but its not my cuppa tea. Dont see that many about in Yorkshire countryside. Which is odd, maybe its like a 4x4 people get the for City riding heh :p
I do however like the R1200S, if they were not STUPID expensive I might consider one.

If the 1200S had a better back seat and provision for at least a top box I would have one. A gorgeous looking BMW. That does not happen very often. (ok new HP2 is even better).
Think you might be surprised how many are actually up for sale 2nd hand and how relatively cheap they are going for.
Still would never sound as good as a big V tho'!;)

You're not wrong there. Safeway used to import an Alaskan smoked beer (about 7.5% alcohol iirc) which was absolutely fantastic. Then Morrisons took them over and stopped doing it. They were sole importer and you can't get it anywhere over here now. I was most upset.
Sorry, completely off-topic.
Yep, the R1200GS is a LOVERLY bike.
I took one out for a test ride last year and almost purchased one (shame about the price!).
I made better progress down a dual carage way on the GS that I did on my speed triple. The thing has so much more visability (mirrors, higher up, etc) and so much torque that overtaking was a whole lot easier without getting into high revs and lots of power. Look, squirt and go.
It was also no slouch going down the race track (which is very close to the catherham bypass) at a very good lick (easily the same as I would do on any sports bike, or my speed triple)
Also, from 30mph they will power wheelie in 2nd, without any effot.
Loverly bike, 11/10. I might have one, one day.

since when is discussing libation off topic :-)
One place I stayed while I was out there was a mile down the road from a local microbrewery called The Silver Gulch - every friday and saturday night you could get 1 hour in the tasting room for $5 - then stagger over the road to the Howlin Dog Saloon

The thing about the GS- and this is the worst part- is that it's a FANTASTIC bike. Breaks my heart to see them in the hands of monkeys. Last trackday I did, there was a guy out on a big red tractor complete with big metal mule sidecases, he went round the outside of me about 3 times :smt045 AND he had a heated seat.

Brand new bikes and No funky LEDS on them, shocking.
We have GS600 at work that are not that different to what Kinvig is using. Not the best bike for our use.

Ch00, I don't have a pic of one of ours, this looks like BMW's demo bike that gets sent out to prospective "clients"
The ones we have just been given have 180 degree front blue leds, and a 360 led cluster on the rear pole. They are soooo bright it's amazing, however, 'cos it's air cooled, the BMW rep says they mustn't sit at idle for no more than a few minutes. To get around that, the Police spec bikes have a small, secondary battery under the fairing which will run all blues for eight hours. Apparently, with the screen in the fully raised position, the bike can do it's top speed with the pole fully raised (about 7 feet up!)
Just gotta persuade the Boss to signe me up for a bike course now!
We have 3 of the new BMWs at my base how ever I cant ride them as they are for a different team so we get stuck with the baby bikes !!!
However I wold rather have that pan next to the Beemer :D

There's a chap near me on what look like a red framed white bodywork HP2. He is the antithesis of your stereotypical beemer rider and only once, when really going for it down a section of road I know well have I gotten away from him. The chap is very quick indeed and I've seen him ride through a camera at 15 over the speed limit without a number plate on. In the right hands, these bikes can absolutely fly.
