I was just wondering whether or not it would be fitting to make a plaque for the site of Marks crash...?
If so I have all the kit at work to make and engrave it, but I wasn't sure what would be suitable to put?
If anyone has some good "SERIOUS" ideas, tributes or mini-euligy esque. suggestions, then please could you post them.
Please NO silly stuff, else it may end up on it... "meh" ;)
Also I haven't figured out quite what to place it on as I haven't visited the site yet. I may get it done, then have a look to see if there's anything at the site.
Cool idea.
Can you attach it to a spike about a foot long at a 45 degree angle? There is nothing there that you can actually nail it to or anything. So sticking it in the ground is just about your best bet.

Nice idea, how about we plant something?

It would be about 3" by 2" and made of brass/bronze.
I might see if I can find some hard-wood, mahog' or oak...
I can get the SV.org logo on there somewhere too.

Not sure about what to put on it. I guess something like:
RIP
Mark Dardenne
13/03/1986 - 05/04/2008
SV650.org remembers 'ASM Forever'

Why did I think it would ever stay serious... (saying that, in the back of my mind I knew that it wouldn't when I was typing it!)
Were there any sayings that he used that would be APPROPRIATE...?

Thanks Dan.
It's d'Ardenne (lower case d, apostrophe, upper case A)
And it probablyt needs a Meh in there somewhere.

So how about:

SV650.org remembers 'ASM-Forever'

How about that? Wouldn't put the name of the website, don't know why, just wouldn't..
My version.

I just think it would be nice to express that he was remembered by the whole site. Not sure how you could do it without the name of the site though.
My version.

Gets my vote.
Incidentally, is it just me who keeps misreading the subject line in the TVSF thread list as "Plague..." ?

I was going to mention this - albeit I am not certain of where the accident was.
I seem to recall reading that Councils don't like roadside memorials - and although they may let them go on for a little while, they do get "tidied away".........
I do appreciate that memorials is a tricky one and the feeling of wanting to publicly mark the existence as well as the passing of someone. Is their anywhere else (Pub / Cafe / Mountain! / etc) that Mark had a connection to - where arrangements could be made?
Or a bit off left field.......what about a "living" memorial - the Org could sponser a kid in the 3rd world? Not wildly expensive - and in some yer get letters back / progress reports (albeit it would probably need someone prepared to act as a back stop, should the org go pop in 5 years time)........could really change someone's life..........and in 15 years time could be someone roaring around Africa or Asia on the trickest SV650 ever
Just thinking aloud...........

How about seeing if Fox's would let it be mounted on one of their walls?

Or on a table/wall/chair at the Shire?

If the org as a whole wants to donate something in memory to Mark, they could always follow the link in my signature.

I've received a PM (thanks Gary) telling me that Fox's have already stated they would be willing to be the home for the plaque. So this is something we could consider.

Probably quite accurate about the highways agency tidying it up after a while; if it were allowed then we would see many more plaques around. I myself am a little uncomfortable with loads of public displays of grief, I don't know why. I just like to remember him in my own way. Maybe Fox's can do a "Mark burger" or something.
Thats a great idea, be good to use the org if poss failing that chip on the GM too ;)
Waiting till pay day then will make contribution so don't worry its coming :)
Good message too

Now a mark burger... so that would be the burger where you think you are getting beef but end up with fish or something like that, in true ASM tradition ;-)

No, that would be when you think your getting a burger but end up with a bowl of cornflakes.
I think a plaque should be just fine. Somehow, I feel branding a type of burger after Mark is stretching things somewhat.

Ok, so I am one of the "foreigners" that never actually met Mark, but his death did affect me quite deeply.
Thanks however to a "group therapy session" on MSN at the time of his funeral (ended up with the few of us just saying "Meh" a lot), I have mostly managed to get over it - to the extent that I thought that coming on Tuesday Night, or cancelling plans made months ago to come to the ride on Saturday would be a step backwards for me in dealing with this, I think that when I finally get to meet all you guys I would like it to be under happier terms.
However I did think of something that I was originally planning to put forwards for on the site, but that may work as a plaque.
I PM's BigApe about this earlier and he suggested just putting it out on here for comment, so thats what I will do.
Please realise tho, that this is still very much up in the air, I dont know if it will be possible to get done for sure yet, but I would like the option to be put forwards before anything is settled on.
The PM to Si is as below
My Brother-in-laws cousin is a comic book artist, a fairly good one - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Erskine.
I sent him the following email.
"About a week ago, a guy I knew on an internet forum was killed in a bike accident.
I was wondering if you could take a tiny bit of time and do a quick pencil sketch for me.
Was thinking of a figure on a sports-bike, wheelie-ing past the traditional "Death" stereo-type with a caption of the guys catchphrase underneath it of "Meh".
Something postcard sized, with no detail really, hopefully no more than about 15 mins work - think convention sketch.
Sorry to just pop up from no-where with this."
I think that something like that to the side of the text stuff above would work.
Let me know what you think

This is very odd. I'm a graphics artist in my spare time and I have already started a peice of work in memory of Mark. It was purely for my own purposes. It's a rear shot of him on his bike, comic book style, it even has his lopsided riding position. I've yet to finish the design but will scan and post once it's finished.
Just my opinion... but I'm never keen on plaques to mark the site that someone 'died', its rather a bad memory to me. I'd rather myself have a bench up somewhere I liked to go, or maybe a plaque at my fav biking spot... Or cus I'm cheap, my name carved in a tree.
In NZ we have little white crosses that mark the sites of road accidents. It helps to serve as a memory but also as a suttle warning to other motorists to take it easy.
Was thinking of something similar but more appropriate to bikers is to place a concrete cast of Alpinstars boots (painted white of course).
Something to toot at when we ride past...
Fitting or not - I dont know - just an idea :)

(....Goes to plant the :offtopic: sign in the vinyard... )
I take your point about Highways... they always keep a nice clear mown grass verge... (shame about the debris in the road...)
But Foxs would be more permanent...
Would it be suitable to include a reference to the site? I didn't see a problem with this... and was going to put either the logo or some ref. to it... But if people have strong feelings about it then I can leave it off?
If I do it and it looks cack, I can always grind it down and start again!
