Gay bike name; Thunderace - directly from Top Gun...

After establishing that; the bike was so good... Of course it was really odd to drive I4 when brain (?) is set for a twin. I really liked the chassis, it didn't nod when braking and seemed to steer better (more accurately) than the SV. I have WP springs and stiffer oils in the forks, but still the Thunderace was remarkably better.

After I stopped chaning gears at 7k the bike really showed what the extra 350cc can do. It was like driving a bike for the first time again ;) Slightly scary when there was so much power on the tap. The 5 speed box didn't impress, but I guess it is ok and one learns to live with it.

I'd need to pay something around 2k? between that and the SV. The Ace (see, that is gay!) is 4 years older but has done 20000 km less. The meter might be tampered however, so I'm not really counting that into the equation.

I'm not sure if I want to trade. I'd love to get a bigger bike (mainly the dimensions, the power is not necessary) as I'm over 6 foot 8... Then again I'm sure the SV has still a lot to teach, but I could learn the same with the Ga... Ace. I like the looks of the Yamaha (huh, that looks better), being full faired and 'modern'. The back seat doesn't have a handle I know my girlfriend likes in the SV, but I'd put a rack there anyway so there is something to lean to.

Any thoughts?

?2K plus an SV sounds way to much to pay for an Ace. Should cost you less than ?2k. Lucky has one & had some problems to start with.

Lovely bikes the 'aces, however the deal doesn't sound that great to me. £2000 and a SV for an 'ace is overpriced!

It feels that the Yamahas are slightly more valued than Suzukis here... And yes, the currency is Euro, not Sterling :)

I guess different market........

Never had a Gay Experiance :D - but yer will get kinda hooked on the fact that from 80mph an IL4 litre bike is just getting into it's stride and takes off like a scalded cat.

Takes little skill in a straight line but great fun nonethless and addictive........:D Main reason I bought an SV650..........

Really? All the fours I've owned have been great at low speed, the one I have now is better than an SV.

It goes 'round corners fine too.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, of all the bikes I ever owned I really regret selling my 45,000 mile old slightly battered Thunderace.

Try saying it in that American Movie Voiceover Man type way:

THUNNNDER AAACE!

Also works for

FIRRRRE BLAAADE!

Just a thought, might help...

huh? I didn't say otherwise - just saying what I especially liked about an IL4, that the SV650 (for all it's good points etc etc ) doesn't provide.....wasn't meant to be an exhaustive list...........

Indeed! I bought this:

http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/6597/acell8.jpg

around 2 months ago......1996 model with 24000 on the clock for £1500. It's an awesome bike which goes like a rocket and I'm really pleased with it. I've not had many probelms with it, the main one being a smashed clutch plate (wrong one installed by a previous owner) and seized brake calipers, but both have been fixed and the calipers replaced by a set off a R1.....one of the good things about the bike is that many parts will bolt straight on from other Yams. The riding position is really comfortable, the bike is great for pillions, and I find it quite flickable even though it is a bit of a bus :D

If the price is right go for it, but remember that tyres and consumables in general will be more expensive and will wear out quicker putting your running costs up.

The clutch plate being broken wasn't a big problem - where the bits went was a problem.

Regarding the price....

People have commented that it is over-priced. This may not necessarily be true. It may be expensive for a UK market, but the poster is in Helsinki! The UK second-market is incredibly buoyant and flooded with options, meaning you can get some very good deals, however it isn't like this everywhere.

For example - An average price far a k3-5 SV650S with ~10,000 miles here in OZ is around the $7000 - $8000 mark or 3500-4000 pounds!

I rode my mates 'Ace about two months after passing my test and I can honestly say it scared me! Soooooo much power! Yes they are a bit of a bus but the way they pick up speed is mind boggling!

Bet the insurance help counter-balance that though! ;)

Im paying ?420/year living in London TPFT and I'm 29 so not too bad.

What you can't see in the picture though is the garage insurance company insisted I had, which involved moving house and paying a shed load of rent every month, but it's worth it :D

So far I've spent about ?600 on it including can, tyres, clutch, R&Gs, calipers, chain and sprocket etc, but I was happy to pay ?1500 for it.

On a lighter note, my dad just sent me some crash protectors over from Melbourne. I reckon they were named by an Englishman:

Quibbler :)

I will take yer word on it, I kinda lost interest in bikes before the Gaythunder :) arrived.

Although I loved the EXUP - I bought it brand spanking new in May 1991.........I will admit to being kinda P*ssed when the Fireblade came out shortly after :).......this years hot poop always becomes a nearly ran.......

I went from a ZZR1100D2 to my Ace, and it did everything the ZZR did but handled far better, braked far better, and was even more comfy on a run. I think the only real downside of owning an Ace is their ability to use oil when they have a few miles under their wheels. The good thing is the oil light isn't an oil pressure light, it's an oil level light. You have to be a complete and utter muppet to run one out of oil.

Yeah. The bike used in Top Gun wasn't a ThunderAce, or even a Yamaha for that matter. IIRC it was a Kawasaki GPZ900R, but I stand to be corrected on that. Deffo a Kwacker though.

Yes; the point was that naming a bike "ThunderAce" is sort of gay. And Top Gun is the gayest movie ever. Combine the two and you're heading to Danger Zone...

And not to upset anyone; I've nothing against any sexual orientations, as long as they don't include children or animals.

Now, off to Yamaha dealership.

Ace is now parked home. So no-more SV; maybe we get one if the ms. decides to get a license.

I had the fairings already fixed but never had a chance to see how they look like in a bike. That sucks, but got a good deal on the Ace. The engine has been rebuilt about a year ago so my worst fear of having an oil burner are gone.. New tyres, fork seals etc.. Just need to put gas in.

Thanks!

Engine has been rebuilt about a year ago, new set of tyres etc.. I just need to put a top box rack and fix the left rear cowling; the bike has been dropped to that side and probably hit somehing; there is a hole. No-one really notices the hole though. Oh, the bike has some sort of dubble bubble screen, it looks like a bus. Need to find a standard screen or something more cool as the current one has too many corners in it.

Really happy with it. I need to start attending trackdays as that is about the only place where you can really open the throttle...
