View Full Version : Emergency help required
I've just got home from work on my bike and discovered I am missing a rather important part of my bike.
I seem to have lost the oil filler cap. I'm sure you can imagine what the state of my bike and left leg was like.
Is there anyone that has a spare filler cap that I can borrow until I have ordered a new one :?:
If you have, I wonder if you would fancy a ride up to my house so I can fit it and get to work tomorrow :?: I'll obviously pay your fuel costs.
Many thanks from the newly crowned 'stoopid' person.
Many thanks in advance.
Si.

1. Go to kitchen.
2. Find cork.
3. Push cork in hole.
4. Consider whether cork good enough fit.
4.1 If yes then go to 5.
4.2 If no then Gaffa tape over cork.
5. Be pleased at your resourcefulness.

I had already thought of that. Damn it for not being a wine drinker. I think I shall have to go door to door asking if they drink wine.

If I had one I would gladly let you have it. If it's any help I have the day off tomorrow so you can borrow my Hornet if you like?

Likewise, you can use my Ninja if you can get over to Bracknell..
Round my house there is always plenty of things I can use to shove in a hole.
Thanks all for your generous offers to help.
In short, I found a cork. It was still attached to the bottle of red. The conditions of being given the cork was that I had to help empty the contents of the bottle. This I managed to achieve quite quickly.
I was then asked if I needed another cork. Just in case the first one didn't work. I have accepted the offer of the second cork. (can't be too careful). Result of which means that I am too busy to clean the up the rear brake I have already dismantled and may have a few coordination problems later to complete.
This also means I am about to send an email to my boss letting him know I shall be late for work tomorrow.
All in all. It's going to be a good night.
Stuff work, this is far more fun.
A quick show of the mess before I go and pay the penalty for the extra cork.

That is messy, did it just fall off or something?
Sweet lord.
"Safe" it is not.
You're lucky you didn't get stopped by the law otherwise it would've been a long walk home....
How far did you ride it?

 I over took a police car down the A4. He was doing 70 in a 60 limit until he came up to a lorry. He indicated left, moved to the left and I over took both the police car and the truck with a wave of thanks.
I noticed my foot slipping off the footpeg about 5 miles from home.

I'm sure I spotted a few spots of oil on the other side of the A4 coming from Thatcham back to Reading this eve... Didn't spot a cap though...
Your lucky the back end didn't go a little sideways!;)

Sh*t Si, it's all over the place!! Lucky you didn't lose it as it's on the back tyre. I'm surprised the engine didn't seize with that much oil ejected.

To be fair to Si, what with him being a stoical NTV rider n'all, I really don't think loosing a bit of oil, the engine seizing up, or even going sideways round the Robin Hood Roundabout would phase him that much...
Considering it was that bad, and he only really noticed that his right foot felt a little slippy!

Aye, and there's always the 'no sense, no feeling' argument. :D

It's not that much oil - a little bit goes a long way when it's spraying around.
An edit to my earlier instructions as per your text:
1. Go to kitchen.
2. Find cork.
2.1 Cork most likely to be found in bottle.
2.2 Shame to waste bottle contents.
2.3 Cheers!
3. Push cork in hole.
4. Consider whether cork good enough fit.
4.1 If yes then go to 5.
4.2 If no then Gaffa tape over cork.
5. Be pleased at your resourcefulness.
6. Ride bike to work.

Big Ape, you does realise the chain is on the other side if you wanted to lube it.:smt077
I have a spare if I can find it and I'll bring it down Saturday. Any good?
Damn only just read this - a 'help me fix my bike' thread that I can contribute to.
I'm rubbish at fixing bikes but I'm brilliant at drinking wine
So Si if you need any similar help in the future just give me a bell
Oh my head hurts.
As Sid Squid has mentioned. It really isn't much oil. Oil is like blood. It only takes a little to look a big mess. The level was on minimum when I checked it.
Now I have to get into work with a hangover. Lucky for me that it's the non productive day of the week.
If going halves on two bottles of wine of an evening has left you that ropey, maybe you should stick to shandy in future, you big jessie.

*removes dunces hat and give it to the ape*
So how did the cap come off? You must have left it somewhere surely, they can't just unscrew randomly :-P

Unless the bike was parked where some souvenir hunter helped himself. :smt013That's why I have an anti-tamper one on mine.
Well at least it would stop the rust...

what i want to know is...
how did you manage to overtake a copper whilst sitting backwards on the bike???
I'm sure you can imagine what the state of my bike and left leg was like.

Not needed now thanks Pete. The cork is doing a sterling job and I've ordered a new one which will be with me on Tuesday. Thanks for the offer though. :thumleft:
