Ok just put a new set of tyres on my bike, and as usual im always suprised how bad the handling had become on the old tyres.
So how worn do you let them get? are you a down to the cords rider
Or do you get them changed when they are prity well squared off.
I change the rear when it's square, but no cordage.

wise man! a guy on another forum posted a picture of his last tyre before he changed it! and it was total cordage right round! brave or daft you decide.
Well having a look at my blog... 9000 miles (http://bikersview.blogspot.com/2008/02/9000-miles_6622.html) and nice and square... and the fronts was nicely squared off on the right after 13000 odd miles.

changed mine on Sat because the back was starting to square.

I thought it handled OK myself, Just meant I lent it into the corners more to use the unworn bits of tyre. Though I must admit it did track abit what with the square front as well.

I inherited Suze with a very squared off rear, with a hole( but not punctured), about 8000 miles and me on the back. I did about 1000 on top of that. It were awful, I said i would never have a tyre like that again. felt like you were going to fall of it were that square.
I got some Metzler sportec jobbies on the black one when I bought it, they were brand new..put about 2000 miles on that and I got on with them so well I got rid, asap. There were nowt physically wrong with them( just a slight tear from france) , I just thought they were sh!!yte
So if I'm not happy...I get rid, simple as...
I generally buy new tyres when I feel the grip is fading.
Having lots of pretty high speed bends near by that you know well helps. When you have to slow down too much for bends, then it's time to change.
Obviously the exception is puntures. :king:

Well I most of the time run down, as soon as i start to see the carcass or whatever it is, I change it.

I'm a year round rider, and virtually 365 days a year, and I wouldn't let the tyre go down to canvass. I have had a few squared tyres, I replace tyres when they are either rediculously squared off or when they are getting close to the minimum legal tread depth. Riding year round you never know what the weather will be from day to day, would be very stupid to get caught out and then risk a ride with no tread in damp/rain.

Why it can be fun...
Though you have made some very good points I am an all yearer too, 200 miles a week, don't stop me running em down...Young and stupid i spose!

600+ miles a week for me, so planning in advance is needed!

Bllx you only need visible tread :p
I know only applies to 50cc
When people start to point at them when you're parked up's not a bad time....

Stu - Good post, wonder how many will fall into it?
For the avoidance of doubt & before it gets removed - 21 Quest rides a Scooter (if it was only a 50cc then only visible tread is required by law) HTH

I replace mine whenever they get to the wear indicators.
I don't need any more excuses for the coppers to give me points/rip me a new one if/when I get pulled!! ;)
Tyres are 6 points aren't they??!!?

3 points a tyre
A wheel rim with molten rubber stuck to it no longer constitutes a tyre Stu! :p
