Wow that's great.

I think I got a refund from the tax man too (£300)

because my pay-slip was larger than what I actually earn (and nope I didnt get a pay-rise, or a bonus or money for overtime :(). Took me a while to work out what the pay-slip meant because I thought you'd receive a cheque if you had been overpaid

Ah! At last - you can pay off them builders that are down your road so they won't be blocking everyone's access anymore. WINNER!!:D

I don't have to fill in returns anymore so it's just PAYE for me. I paiid what felt like a fortune last year and I'd like to pay less. I have a ?125 salary deduction (max allowable for that scheme) for a share save scheme which goes out before tax and I already pay monster pension.

Is there anything else I can do to offset the amount without ending up doing returns again? I'm on a std 543L tax code.

No idea how the whole tax thing works. Are you sure your tax code is right? I had to fill in a P45 form so that the tax man could work out the right code.

What is a share save scheme?

This is all well and good until you release that it was actually your money in the first place.....:smt005

I've never had a tax refund in my life, in my case the taxman cometh and taketh away all the time. I've looked at various bit and pieces to try reduce the amount that he steals on a monthly basis. Best I've seen so far is salary sacrifice, I used it to pay for my laptop before tax, so a nice 40% off. The talk at work is now that I may be able to move my car onto salary sacrifice soon, so at least I'll save 40% on a car I don't want, or need, except for work...... I may explore dumping another few K a year into my pension, seems it's another way to not have to pay tax, only downside is that I have to wait until I'm 55 before I can retire.

A few months back I got a tax bill. It was for 25 pence. It must have cost the morons at least 30 pence to send me the letter!
