View Full Version : Bike insurance
I would welcome any advice on which insurance company is the best for a Newbie. I have my bike but cannot ride it yet  until I pass my test in June ;). It is currently being kept in a garage...

Progressive is a great option. We've used them for a lot of our bikes.
try a couple of comparison sites and see which is best then go to them direct.
I am with ebike. Bennets seem to be cheap, but as you have got modifications i dont think they like those much?
I found motorcycle direct to be the cheapest, I was 20 when i got insured last year and it was just over £400 fully comp on a K3 SV650s which aint to bad considering my age.

Bennetts wanted to charge me an extra £1000 for fitting a set of twin lamps... if you make the stupid mistake of going with them then don't tell them about any mods.
And to completely affirm my view about them being daft ar$eholes, the renewal price was £300 more than the years cover.
Ended up going with carole nash this year, about £100 cheaper than last years, with all mods declared including gsxr suspension, full system etc etc.
Get a copy of MCN and ring around as many as you can. Each company does different deals for different riders at varying times. Get a good quote and you can use that to negotiate with the next and so on until you good a really good deal. I just bought a K8 SV650s and Insured it fully comp with zero no claims and no alarms etc for ? 235 that was with express but I wanted to pay in instalments and Hastings came out cheaper although they came in at ? 243 I also had quotes in excess of ?400
good luck

Just to add guys some companies no offer to insure excess for a bit of cash, I paid ?30 extra and now should anything happen to my bike I don't have to the excess, when you think ?400 that will be more than a months rent (when I move) so I think it well worth the money. Its something I will carry on doing.
As for which one, shop around.

It seems, from previous stories I've heard on here and elsewhere, that you'd be well advised to avoid Bennetts like the plague.

Express are supposedly the 'official' insurance brokers for Suzuki, and they made a reasonable offer for my first year as I had no NCB following a long bike-less break. Have stayed with them but changed to a different insurer for the hopeful addition of a Street Triple on the same policy

Wow!! That does sound really steep for a quote!!! Are you able to try anywhere else or are you staying with them??

Oh, just to add - double check the terms as well, my Norwich Union renewal came through at £240 but commuting had now been specifically excluded from regular SDP use. Got commuting back on the policy and £130 off the bill by going through Carole Nash instead - I really don't understand the science of working out insurance prices - such massive variance in premiums seems to suggest it's all guess work rather than any risk analysis.
I've used mce for the last 2 years, they beat last years price by £20 so i thought, bugger it, stay with'em, too lazy too shop around :D

Carole Nash for me. When my bike insurance renewal was due they wanted more so I shopped around then got back to tell them the lowest quote. They matched it.
Avoid Bennetts as they are a nightmare should you have to claim.
Thank you everyone for your advice and comments :D. All very helpful and I will avoid Bennetts like the plague. Will phone around and see what quotes I get and let you know... as I am sure it may help someone else know who is looking...

Yes I would have had a heart attack too!!! Have you had your respray done yet? What is the matter with your sv?
I haven't got leathers, lid yet, still looking around. I need to try more on in my size just to see. Went on a Sunday to Fowlers in Bristol to have a look and they didn't have my size and the warehouse is closed on Sundays so they couldn't get me any from there :(. Nevermind, I might go to George Whites in Swindon this weekend and have a look and try on some :D

Head oop north a bit to Cheltenham, there's a Hein Gericke store here that must have spent a good four hours finding gear to accomadate girly curvy bits for my missus.
