View Full Version : Rear Brakes, Disc and Pad Replacement - Can I?
Well basically I'm rubbish at DIY, but the more I achieve the more I want to try. I need a new rear disc and rear pads (desperately) and am wondering whether or not this is a step too far for me?
How difficult is it?
.....and are there any simple (really simple) 'Rear Brakes for Dummies' type instructions?
Also what tools would I need?
Pads - pish easy so long as the piston goes back into the caliper nicely (plenty of info on the org already). Tools required, a couple of sockets (I forget the sizes). Maybe a torque wrench to put them back on, but I just guess the tension of the bolts on the rear (front takes more braking force).
Discs - a little more complex, but certainly do-able. Wheel will need to come off for this one, then there's a couple of bolts holting the disc to the wheel itself. I'd be a little more cautious about torque on this one, spinning disc and all.

the pads are pretty easy as baph says and as for the disc the hardest part ther is probley just taking the wheel off lol the disc is only held on with a few bolts.
A friend of mine has offered to oversee my work and advise, he has been doing his own bikes for years, so I feel safer having a go now, plus he has every conceivable tool possible.
On another note, I called EC Bate (Dartford) to get a quote for the parts they quoted me EBC disc "as it is much cheaper than Suzuki" it was £97.52, so assuming they were doing me a favour I didn't ask about the Suzuki part.
My friend called Aye Gees, who I don't think much of, and got prices from them. A proper Suzuki read disc is £70 (all-in). WTF? That is the last time I go anywhere near ECBate!!!!
So the disc and pads are on order and I will hopefully be fitting sometime in the coming week. Thanks all for the advice.

Maybe they quoted you a price for a front disc by accident, lol - I think that's a decent price for a front. Although I've never bought one so never studied it in detail!

Shame, you could have got a braking wave disc for the same sort of money.
Use only a good quality allen type socket when removing the disc bolts as they are loctited in from the factory and are very tight, so you run the risk of b*ggering up the bolts if an inferior tool is used.
Also remove the reservior lid off your master to stop your caliper pistons moving back in. (only necessary if you've got a lot of fluid in there)
Here's my thread when I did my back brake last year...might help...

An important thing is to get an allen socket, you've got no chance of getting disc bolts out with an allen key!
Buy a rail of them, they're really useful.

Seriously though, I'm not too sure DD, what do you suggest?
I'm thinking of changing the air filter and plugs. Is it worth getting a K&N filter?

Nah, get a BMC one.
What else.... Motosliders, GSXR Front End, Rear Shock, Full System, Lightened Crank, Engine Bore, etc....
You shouldn't ask that question on this forum! ;)
GSXR front end eh???? Hmmmmmm not sure about that, would look cool though.

I bet that wasn't new from a dealer though was it YC?
Nah, get a BMC one.
I've had a K&N and BMC road filter fitted, and the bike feels a little better on the BMC, the K&N made the bike feel worse when i first fitted it.

GSXR front end on a pointy is a dodle to do, pretty much a straight swap only bit of faffing is with the speed drive

Nope... from one of those bike builders in the USA who takes a perfectly good 'busa and turns it into a chromed up, too long, wide tyre'd harley wannabe.
Tragic, shocking waste of a decent bike, but it got me some nearly new discs...
Any filter is going to make the bike feel worse on it's own, you've gotta remap/rejet or it'll run horribly.

Ah right a "slammed" busa.
Ihad the K&N, akrapovic system and had it rejetted but it still ran better with the satndard filter
