View Full Version : Black Rat stickers
Just been watching the Traffic Cops show from last night on-line, and noticed the copper on the VFR has a black rat sticker on the back of his helmet.
I always thought these were a myth...but is there any truth in the black rat club thing?
Do we have any of our boys in blue post on here?

I know of coppers with stickers, old school ones only mainly.
The new generation lot that i know dont know anything about it other than hearsay and myth. So I wouldnt take your chances and just wack a sticker on and hope for the best.
I understand you would still get pulled over and then and old school copper would then realise your not the dibble and bum you even more.
For the unobservant, here is a little pic!
I play nicely now.
From a high ranking officer on a police forum in the UK:
I must admit that these stickers have become devalued by their availability, mainly through eBay.
There used to be a time (so I'm told) when if you saw a car with a Black Rat sticker on you knew that it was going to be a bobby and more likley a traffic bobby. That meant that you shouldn't be surprised to see it out and about at strange times of day or shouldn't get concerned to see it parked near a police station for a long time. Alsok you knew that there was very little point in stopping it to check it for a routine document check. The stickers do not, and never have, got people off offences.
As they are so easily available now though, and anyone can buy them on eBay they've got no point and all it's done has meant that bobby's get stopped more often as you never know if it's a bobby or not with the sticker in the window. I must admit that I'm suspicious of members of the public who have this kind of sticker in their car as I wonder what other motive they could have other than trying to get off with offences, so they get checked more thoroughly!

Ride a Triumph= RAT
As ex job they meant something once but not so much today and some officers would take offence at a nonplod having them,I have even been asked by probationers or new
officers what they meant or symbolised

The original guff in Fast Bike mentioned that it was a secret Policeman`s club , and if you were speeding and another Officer caught up with you and saw the sticker , they would just ignore you and be on their way as you were also supposed to be an Officer of the Law .

That's how I understand it too.

I spoke to one of the journos on Fastbike (or was is Superbike, can't remember) and they apparently got grief from their local bobbies about publishing those stickers (I was asking him if he had any left as I was changing my plate but they didn't). I don't think every boy in blue knows or at least acknowledges the black rat so even if you have one don't abuse it.
I used to have a black rat and I'm in the Riders Association of Triumph. Does that mean I can wear two? I've just bought a black lid though.
