what os is your laptop?
what are you trying to do between the computers, if its file sharing, you need to check that in OSX "windows file sharing" is turned on
Trying to share a (cable) internet connection and don't have a wireless router. Trying to use the cable modem and an ethernet hub.

on the mac go to system preferences > sharing > then click on the 'internet' tab. voila :)

Virgin Media only allow one ip address per modem. Unless you bought blueyonders no longer available dual ip option about 4 years ago. You cannot use a hub/switch and must use a router.
First check on both machines you are on the same network by using the dos command and enter ipconfig/all and post both results

Can a mac lower itself to talk to a pc?
