Right I have asked my Daughter if she wants to go Pillion on my bike this summer. She said yes so:

She is 9 in September and more than capable of holding on to me and her feet can reach the pillion pegs. I don?t want to go honing around like I would on my own for obvious reasons, And I intend to get an autocom set up for her so she can tell me if she is scared, needs the toilet, uncomfy etc. and I also intend to get one of those love handle things so she can hold on more comfy, as the 6R only has a crappy leather grab handle.

I want to get her some good kit as I am not going to be one of these ar*e holes you see in full leathers with a kid in jeans.

So wise peeps of the org any recommendations for kit, everything from head to toe, and whether you would recommend textiles or leathers. Not to worried about waterproof kit as I will only be going out with her in the dry to bike meets in the evening or a gentle bimble in the summer evenings.

J&S motorcycle accessories do a full range of kids clothes. Helmet, leathers, boots and gloves.

HG have some extremely cute arlen ness suits in kiddy sizes but they cost a small fortune... Missus has some "Hein Gericke Kids Gear" textile trousers & a HG part leather/part textile "Moto Gear" jacket - she's about 4'10 or so. They fit perfect for height but child/adult erm... shape differences means she finds them a bit uncomfortable. The protection on both items is fine and they zip together. Gloves were trickier to find, the ones shes got are too long in the fingers and probably wouldn't be suitable for riding as a result, however they're tight enough around the wrist so they're unlikely to come off. I seem to remember available boot choice was pretty slim. All in all, cost of the gear was actually pretty cheap (well, "cheap" ain't exactly the word, but reasonable for bike gear) with the exception of the lid, the only thing we could find that fitted was an XXS Astro Light.

Definitely get the love handle thingies, and for the first couple of trips you might find that your little'un wants to slide forward and sit on the same seat as you - so be prepared for crushed nads and don't brake too swiftly if you want to stand any chance of having any more kids :D

Love handles work well, and if you get a triboseat cover it will stop her sliding about too.

+1.

My 3yr old helps with the mechanics, and is desperate to get on the back for a ride. But he's far too young. The other two haven't shown nearly as much interest.

When my kids were small, I was able to get good kit for them from 'For Sale' boards in biker hangouts (mainly Squires as I lived in York). Kids grow out of kit and 're-cycled' gear is normally in good nick as it does not get the use adult stuff does. This makes buying next year's kit cheaper to.

Another possibility is the BMF show coming up soon - plenty of specialist kids manufacturers display / sell there

Boots, jeans and jacket were all bought this way.

Cheers guys some good suggestions so far. Thanks.

I will go and look at Both J&S and HG in Bristol with Shannon one day soon, ill let her choose what she likes with encouragement from me as I want her to have at least shoulder knee and elbow padding as well.

LP, good idea about second hand kids kit.

It will be good to be able to nip out to a few meets this summer with her when my wife is at work in the evenings. And who knows you may see an extra little org member on a few ride outs with us. Obviously I will be at the back going a little slower than normal with her on board.

And I will deff get the auto com kit for her to let me know how she is getting on during the ride.

I gave my nearest J&S a call to find out how much of the kids gear they stocked. The nearest one to me is in London. If you have to travel any sort of distance to get there, I'd give them a call to see. It would be a shame to waste all the time it takes to get there only to find they don't have it in stock.

We are taking Megan (daughter) to J&S next weekend. She doesn't know yet and won't know until we get there that we are actually buying the gear for her there and then. I'll be going down on the bike under the pretence of buying something for the bike. She'll be having her first pillion ride for the trip home. Hence checking they had the full stock so we could ensure she had all the right fitted kit for the trip back.

So this is where all my OT for last month is going. Money well spent as far as I am concerned.

Good work!

Good kit doesn't have to cost the earth, You're not lapping Donnington with the kids on the back, so no need to get race gear for them, just decent stuff! Very glad to see more kids going out on the bike, I loved it when I was a sprog and still do!

My son(7 1/2)loves coming out on the back of me,i use love handles as you can feel the child through them and know they are there. Also i've told him if ever he needs me to stop, just to pat me on the side and i will pull over.

As for kit...he wears a set of j&s leathers which also zip at the waste,a pair of trials boots(as any others were difficult to find in his size)a decent pair of gloves with protection and a nitro hemet with iridium visor(he wanted to look like dad:D)
I,m sure your daughter will love it.........happy riding

ps
a couple of pics of my son,the stormtroopr, lol.

my daughter borrowed her pals textiles for her first ride in case she didnt like it. went to Callendar as its a nice road with lots of twisties but only 30 miles one way. stopped in callendar she loved it, went up crainlarich and home the long way 180 miles for first trip. went to hein gerick and got her textile jacket and trousers, my old boots and gloves and my spare helmet. she now has leathers but needs new ones as ones she has are too short. my son now wears her textile kit. I would say go for leathers if only going out on sunny days. look on ebay always stuff on there.

my daughter is looking at getting her first bike when she is 16 (January)

then it would probably be easier for you to remove your own b alls and dangle them from the handlebars as opposed to waiting for Mrs to do it.:smt077
