Ok so due to refinery strike they're shutting a major oil pipeline. Ministers advised people not to panic buy or hoard fuel....

This morning the queue at our local station is the longest I've ever seen it. People getting a bit uptight here.

Anybody else seeing this?

The Sainsbury's petrol station was really busy last night, but as we very rarely shop there that may be normal. No big queues at the Texaco petrol station near work yesterday though:smt102

Could just have been this item (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/tayside_and_central/7368318.stm) on the news then.

I think some people will just panic and run around like headless chickens at the mere suggestion of a shortage.

Anyone remember the panic over sugar shortages?:D

No, I don't buy sugar.

We've had it up here since they started to close Grangemouth down, it's just that predictably the "UK" media ignored it thinking it was a Scottish only issue. They've only just noticed it's not, so now it's hysteria. But it's just as daft up here, petrol stations are running dry because of panic buying, and as a result people are panicking even more ](*,) But generally you can go round the corner and find an empty station with all the fuel you can drink.

People are moron's, that's all I'm seeing.................it will be shut for a couple of days, if people just buy normally there will probably be no shortage.

The trouble is though it's only shut for a couple of days, they have to stop and restart production which takes ages. They started closing down grangemouth away at the start of the week, because it takes so long. So even a 1 day strike affects the plant for much longer, and with grangemouth out the platforms soon fill up the header capacity then the same thing happens to them, and they take time to restart too.

But still, there's loads of petrol swimming around, it's not like the hauliers strike when it wasn't getting to the stations.

Some of us *need* a full tank of fuel next week just to keep our jobs though ;) It's a 3 week strike and they have 9 weeks of reserve supply  The media are doing a great job here ](*,)

Exactly.................so if people just buy normally there should be enough for everyone.

Ah, but a full tank IS normal usuage for you. It's all those people who do maybe 40 miles a week who'll rush out to put gallons of the stuff in their tanks that will cause the problem.

You know i don't care if there if there no fuel for a week, it will slow down the pace of life, which can only be a good thing.....I miss the simple life sometimes when the hardest choice of the day when I was in Mexico can I dive today? Yup so we kit up and dive and cook some food, perfect.

I wish life was like that here some of the time, oh look its sunny I have money for fuel lets go.

I've got a full tank, and there's a tin of fairly old unleaded in the garage somewhere, so hopefully all the cars will be driven off the road, then I can cycle to work, walk home (it's uphill) and then go for a ride on deserted roads :smt050

It is really selfish, people just buy like crazy to make sure they have some themselves. I am not filling up, just taking it easy.

It took Hitlers navy years to nearly reduce this country to the shambles we see here, but only a two day strike at Grangemouth which hasnt actually started yet to do the same.
Thats progress I suppose.

Whats the most expensive you've seen it at so far?

Ill go for just before the border on the A68 Carter Bar, (England side) ?1.30 Petrol, ?1.35 Diesel. I could have sworn I saw the cashier wearing a mask and waving her pistol at me.

Al this fuel shortage cr@p is doing my head in... was forced to use my car for a few days this week since all the local garages has been run dry Sun/Monday. There is plenty fuel to go round between the storage at Kinneil, and the Finnart terminal on Kitty's wibbly wobbly road. (East and west coast are linked by pipeline) As for shutting the plant down.. They are just making a big deal out of it to make the strike look bad. Every year they have various "Shutdowns" for repair work.. usually 2-3 weeks for the Cracker unit that makes the fuel, nobody knows anything about them though till they fire the plant up and the sky turns orange again.
Glad i dont work there anymore :D

Now the plant is shut down & presumably cooling, will they bring forward any maintenance to avoid later shutdowns?

Nope.. Coz they are all out on strike, No lazy sod's in the control rooms.. no permits to go set fire to things. (not that i enjoyed fire tenders appearing where i was welding)
Takes months to organise all the new pipework and other stuff that gets installed, 90% of all the shutdown work is carried out by us "subbies". Worked in BP/Innovene for 9 years with a contract pipework company, and used to love getting hired out to the BP's own workshop.. was like being on holiday working for them!

Well, we had no problem getting fuel yesterday anywhere. No big queues, no panic. Maybe most people are just being sensible this time and not falling for media hysteria.:)

I saw massive queues at Tesco`s in Llandudno Junction , and thought "blow that I`ll fill up elsewhere" ..... that`s when I realised why the queues were so bad , I went to Esso only to find it had been knocked down this week ................... DOH!!!!!

Good job I ain't going. But the robbing gits have been hiking up the prices whenever Asda has run out.

So who's pocketing the extra? The thieving git in number 10 or the thieving oil companies?

kwak zzr
28-04-08, 08:18 AM
i couldn't say but the guy at number 10 is having more than his fair share. it cant be the fuel company's because fuel is cheaper in other country's.

markmoto
28-04-08, 09:24 AM
Diesel is now more expensive because the goverment slap a higher tax rate on it due to it being a more pollutiong fuel!! which is correct but its just another way to milk the motorist.

northwind
28-04-08, 06:06 PM
Ah, but diesel engines tend to be more efficient so it still generally works out cheaper. With the short-term price hikes apparently britain's a bit short of diesel production, we can meet demand but there's not much surplus, unlike petrol.

Is the Moss not run by Exxon or Esso? only been in there a few times.

Same style "candle" in Grangemouth.. bit bigger if i mind right.. and also went Bang well back in '87! Explosion heard as far as Bonnybridge.. several hundred houses lost windows that morning.. and gained a few strange metal ornaments in the gardens! The Cat reformer also went bang that year.. not as big a bang tho. Excellent saftey record down there though ;)
