i had a coleman 1/2 man tent which was really light weight only 3 kg but it was not a 1 - 2 man tent I think it was a half man tent. coleman have quite a good range though I think. bought it 4 years ago for ?40 sold it on e bay last month for ?36.50 with ?10 postage - bargain
I've been camping/touring on bikes for 30yrs. As you say the packed size is a critical feature.
My current tent is a Phoenix Phreespirit (don't you hate that?), which I've had for 15yrs and has been well worth the cost. Two things I'd do differently next time though, first DO NOT GET A YELLOW TENT :smt018 , the insects think it's a big flower, and second, try to get one with a "vestibule". If you get stuck somewhere in a rainy spell, it's a pain not being able to sit under a canopy of some desription.
Tents are better value now than they've ever been (China effect?), but light weight and small pack size still costs. Major requirement for serious touring is waterproofness, if it leaks it can be misery.
