View Full Version : Can spiders live in your ear?

......I really hope not!!!!!!

I've gone a bit deaf in one ear, and before you all tell me to clear them out, it's not that :p

I'm thinking it may be water, but I really don't know and surely after a week or so it should have sorted itself out? My mate has just very thoughtfully suggested that a spider may have crawled in and is hatching eggs  :-s I know heard of them crawling in mouths...

Is anyone an ear expert? :)

:shaking::shaking::shaking::shaking: It's doing my head in :( Should I be arranging to see the doc?

It's more likely to be an ear infection than spiders, I wouldn't worry.

I heard about someone who had a baby scorpion hatch in their ear once. although it was on the radio and probably an urban myth

Might be worth getting checked out as its been a week, particularly if it is painful.

Put some warm olive oil in there just a few drops. I get trouble with my ears regular and the nurse told me to do this and it works. Helps loads more than the stuff you buy in the shops, she said its safer aswell. If it doesn't clear go get it syringed, i love the feeling and then the radar hearing is great for a few days.

Ok you're gonna think I'm really daft now (and you wouldn't be far wrong :D) but I've never had that done, how does it work? is it as uncomfortable as I'd imagine it to be? 8-[

I'm a bit deaf in one ear at the moment, bloody annoying it is.

I'd feel sorry for the poor nurse who has to do that to people, but I think it might be in order for me.

It's great they shoot a warm jet of water in your ear and hold a dish to catch all the spiders, i mean wax ;).. you have to use a lubricant for a few days before i.e warm olive oil to loosen it but it's great, doesn't hurt just like jumping in the swimming pool and getting water in your ears. You'll have to see you GP first though just to make sure theres no infection..

A 1996 study concluded that ear candling does not produce negative pressure and fails to remove ear wax

I doubt that a candle flame produces enough pressure to lift wax, especially as it's probably stuck pretty well to the inside of your lug'ole.

How's about go see the doctor? :-P

Either that or come up ere and let my ma take a look.

And what do another even wierder bunch of quacks, who make a living jetwashing ar$eholes, know about ears?

Gives new meaning to "doesn't know his ar$ehole from his earhole" ehehehe

No you're not as there are many preparations available at your local pahramcy that could help sort out your ear problem. Most importantly do not use cotton buds beyond the outer ear to fish for any clumps of earwax as you may push through to the ear drum which is very painful.

as said before use some olive oil each night and a cotton wool plug to stop the oil coming out for a few days, then try cotton buds again carefully. But the best advice would be to go see your GP and get them to book you in for an Ear syringe. It's not painful and it will sort your hearing out if you have a blockage. Could be something else other than wax so go see your doc/nurse;)

I heard about someone who had a baby scorpion hatch in their ear once. although it was on the radio and probably an urban myth

Bizarre story from Lozzo's mispent childhood.

I got into a fight with a kid up the road when I was about 6 and living in Singapore. This kid had two bigger brothers who saw what was going on and ran to his aid. The larger boys overpowered me and held me down while one of them stuck an orange pip in my ear (he'd been eating the orange when he saw the fight). in my daft attempts to remove it I only succeeded in shoving it even further down my ear canal.

Fast forward two weeks and little Lozzo is in agony with earache, which I'd been letting everyone know about because it was proper painful. Now I'd been in a lot of trouble with my ma for fighting cos I was a proper little tearaway bully at that age, and I daren't tell her I'd been fighting, and worst of all I daren't tell my dad I'd lost a fight or he'd have gone mad at me for losing. So I asked my ma in a subtle way "what happens if you get an orange pip stuck in your ear?" and without even letting me explain I was in the car and down to the clinic in Serangoon.

When we got there I was fast-tracked into the treatment room and a nice doctor shoved a scope in my ear and recoiled in horror. A couple of minutes of flushing and prodding, during which I screamed the place down, and the offending orange pip was removed from my stinky lughole... complete with two large sprouting shoots. Apparently an ear is a perfect place for an orange pip to start sprouting, especially in somewhere as humid as Singapore. I'm still a bit deaf in that side as it badly ruptured my eardrum.

One day I'll let you know about the cherry stone and my nose.

I used to get that treatment done when I was younger. It was great coming out afterwards every sound is so crisp and clear.

Last time though they used a little hoover/suction machine thing which wasn't as nice as the water injection.

They used the hoover on me...eventually...

Got a blocked ear and the GP doc fished around with a hook/claw thing 8-[and promptly succeeded in pushing earwax into my eardrum denting it. Sent to nurse to syringe it...cue falling off chair sideways due to cold water used messing up delicate balance bone thingys in the ear. Had enough went home. Woke up during night with excruciating earache, ended up in hospital being given lots of drugs - pain did not stop, just did not care about it. :smt089Sent to Ear Nose and Throat part of hospital next day where they stuck hoover thingy down my ear and cleared the wax.:smt050 ENT doc had a look and told me the drum was 'dented'.:|

Moral of the story? Go to ENT and get it hoovered, they know what they are doing. Don't let the quacks near it.

U can get a syringe ur ear, do it very carefully ur self. clean warm water. I swim a lot so do this about every 2 months. Dont stick any thing in ur ear or let a "normal" DOC do the same, I did ONCE..

Don`t be sticking cotton buds down your ear... will do more damage. Best option is as has been said olive oil down your ear morning and night, you can buy an ear dropper from chemist and is less messy or you can buy ear drops but they`re expensive and oil works just as well. You can have ears syringed but the practice nurse/District nurse won`t do it until you`ve used drops for at least 10 to 20 days (depends on the nurses protocol).

Ear syringing is painless when its done properly.. cold water should never be used and its only ever done under gentle pressure cos of risk of perforation to ear drum.

I`d say if there`s no improvement after 10 days with ear drops then go to GP and ask for appt for ear syringing. Good luck, did you hear all that or should I shout?

PS: Don`t (as one recent patient did) use lard... i told him to use olive oil but cos he had none he thought he could melt lard and use that instead... doh!!!

OMG...I WOULD have gone mental if a spider was in my room

i have purchased a spider hoover now. The only colour i could get was pink. It has a little flower trap on the top. Got it from superdrug. 5 quid!

Now the tube that extends from the motor to the catcher is only 30 cm....

that is way to close for comfort. So im looking for a longer hose to fit to the end so i dont get bit:mrgreen:

Thinking it was a spider, finger goes into my ear. OUCH!!!! That F#!K^&G HURT!

Finger came out, along with one squished bee. That gave me a massive earache, and I was deaf in that ear for about a fortnight. The damn thing had only stung my eardrum. :(

There's no birdie eating spiders in the UK as far as i know, and it would have to be a pretty damn ferocious spider to take on a bird when it was less than an inch long!!! :p

Not only fruit, but also plants. There was a case not so long ago that I think came from South America? The bulb of the plant had been digested by a female spider, who had then laid eggs in there.

Customer bought the plant from a UK supermarket, couple of weeks later, they had loads of spiders crawling around the lounge. Think they were funnel web's too. Fatal those beggars.

Ah, that's nothing. You've obviously seen my recent comments about snakes.

A couple of years back, I also woke up in a room in which a female Chilean rose tarantula had given birth, and the eggs had hatched during the night. Couple of hundred tiny tarantula's...

The cage containing them was left open overnight. I was in a sleeping bag on the floor.

Nah, there were maybe 20 on me. I actually woke up becuase one of them was on my face.

I woke my mate up, we sealed the room & went to a local pet shop. The guy there agreed to loan us a couple of pet cages, and in exchange, he got as many of them as we could put in the cages. That was a couple of trips backwards & forwards.

When he said enough was enough, we used the cages to round up more & dropped them off at the nearest RSPCA centre, who I'm guessing will of forwarded them to zoo's & pet shops etc.

My mate was finding them for weeks apparently.

Typically, Salticidae grow to be a couple of inches (tip of the toes to tip of the toes) max. Some can also jump up to 40 times their body length. So a 2inch spider could potentially jump a little over 2 metres.

Most aren't that dangerous to people, but deadly to ants. Remember too, that ants have fangs & can bite the spider back, so they do pack a punch, then run & hide until the ant dies.

Are you sure?

Also, apparently 5million Americans are stung by fire ants every year... one of whom died according to the stats I've just looked at. 27 others needed hopital treatment.

unprovoked? Why don't they just run away like most do? Or is it just the sight of a big scary human that puts them into biting mode?

Oh and some ants are eeeeeeevil. I watched a documentary on them once, they attack in swarms, you do NOT want to be around when they're hungry. Is it army ants that can strip animals of flesh in a veeeeery short amount of time? Like the pirahnas of the forest :p

Think like a small animal for a second.

You see something bigger than you, so you hide. It comes closer, so you back away until you're trapped in a courner. This big thing is swinging something at you. Predators normally attack you from above. You know you have enough venom in your fangs to bring down a small bird.

Your last option is to jump, bite, and run, just in case the big scary thing doesn't die immediately.

Now from the human perspective, you've found a spider, but it's run away. You've trapped in a corner, and swinging a brush at it to squash it. Ouch that f&$k?r just bit me!! Where the hell did it go....

Spiders, like snakes and generally most animals, will only attack something if they perceive a threat, or they're overly hungry.

I'm not sure if they're as quick as pirahnas, but an army of ants will strip everything. Doesn't matter if it's fruit, bark, human flesh, other insects. Anything remotely edible is gone. Don't often see armies of that magnitude anywhere in the world, but it does happen from time to time.

An enormous spider jumped on my head this morning (no joke, it was big enough that I felt it land) then after I knocked it off into my lap shrugged off two mightly blows with my mobile phone, before running away at about a hundred miles an hour, knocking over a chair as it went. I'm sure I heard it laughing. Now it's obvious what it was up to, it was trying to get in my ear to lay its eggs.

Incidentally, I reckon far more people would go to the docs about ear problems if we stopped calling the treatment "syringing"... Makes it sound scary.

Just as an extra note to this thread:

If a ground dwelling spider is dropped from waist height on to the floor, chances are it'll die due to internal bleeding. Well, more specifically, the acid that is uses to digest it's food comes out & digests it's own organs. Nice.

When you get the problem sorted, don't use the same earplugs - that would only re-infect.

Good. I was trying to kill it with the phone but it barely even noticed.

A very good point, also makes it very misleading

Hope it's not an infection then, bought some new plugs a month ago
