Anyone know how old kids in year 3 are at primary school?

What sort of level of stuff do they know?? ... are we talking times table or basic algebra ... what level of science do they know, what level of English?!!?

I'm gonna have a quick google fu now, but expect to be bombarded with hits ... so asking the mighty .org ... someone must have kids in Yr 3?!!? :D

a child in year 3 would be 7/8 years old and learning would be some times tables (1x,2x,5x,10x)and the science would be water/growing plants/oxygen, they also learn basic computer skills (word, paint, publisher) this information comes from my 9 year old daughter.

Thanks, I get the sort of level ... it is my first day at school tomorrow and I was actually just preparing a few experiments in case I was asked to teach something ... and I didn't want to be caught off guard ...

I was actually going to demonstrate Newtons 3rd law and show how it relates to space ships. Demonstrate why some things float and some things sink ... then bring into context with a bit of history and Archimedes, and his 'eureka' moment and how that relates to big heavy metal ships floating and show some of the plasticine floating (as I have re-shaped it into a boat shape as opposed to a ball and how it is displacing its own weight/volume etc etc).

I was then going on to show how/why aeroplanes can fly and demonstrate 'lift' ...

I was then going to show how to use algebra to solve a problem that at first seems really hard ...

And showing them how to approximate how many times older than them I am ...

As long as I use plenty of props in my demo/explanation, would you see all this as beyond a 7/8 year old?!?!

in my daughters case yes, she would prob just deal with that kind of stuff now at age 9, she said they havent touched on algebra yet.

well i were nearly right with 8...see Dizzy to the end me.....

TBH I was surprised what my lads learning, hes been off a couple of weeks ill, and I've been popping in to get him bits of work to do. All literacy and numeracy, but it looks like me sitting with him and teaching him stuff, when he was little is paying off

Ok, so lets knock the algebra on the head, but I really really think I can get the other concepts across by way of play/demonstration and then trying to explain what happens and why. Then using the actual names of people as trivia rather than the important part .. the eureka bath bit and him then running down the street with no clothes on should make them laugh :) ... I want them to realise why stuff in the world around them does stuff and then to in future question why everything does everything and not just accept it does ;)

Newtons 3rd should be easy too ... as I can get them throwing stuff and pushing each other, they are bound to enjoy that/find that fun and memorable!?!? 8)

If I can get one kid to think science is cool as it explains stuff around them, then my job is done!! and I could be hooked!! 8)

Oh and history ... what sort of stuff do I need to know about ... like I remember the battle of Hastings was in 1066, but little more ...

I could probably waffle a bit about the barter system, but again, I can't remember when in time that was rife (gonna google now 8))

cool, ta ... what does she think to my level of stuff I'd like to teach them ... does she thing that if it is all done via demo, not just talk and chalk {yawns} I could get them to understand?!!? :)

Try this. your looking at Key stage 2, Year 3. So any unit beginning with 3...

http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/schemes3/subjects/?view=get

This too:

http://www.ncaction.org.uk/subjects/science/index.htm

Click on 'search for pupils work' at the top. She says pupils will be working towards level 2A/3.

She thinks you may be going in a bit high level. She suggests making parachutes and seeing which shape is best, maybe time on a stopwatch for them to hit the ground etc? She liked the idea of the plasticine boat though!

Cool, ta, Ill have a ganda :)

I'll do the boat one first and if they look to be a bit lost with that one will ditch the other stuff and do the parachute experiment 8)

I've only had an initial ganda, but those websites are corkers ... I was wondering if I started up how I'd know what was in the syllabus, that even tells you exactly what to do!! Basically as long as I genned-up the night before using that website I'd be in a pretty good position to know exactly what I need to teach in each class!! 8)

Thank ya mum 4 me :)

The teacher I voiced my concerns with said it is kinda natural when you are actually with the kids not to say anything like that!! ;)

I really don't know how involved I'll be, but I DID want to go in there with some idea of what sort of things the kids might be learning and a little bit of prep if I was put on the spot in front of the 20 little retches!! ;)

As I said until now I didn't even know how old they were gonna be ... talk about in the deep end

You'll be fine. Just be yourself and I'm sure I don't need to tell you but be firm if you need to be! Mum is quite strict but all the kids love her as they know where they stand. She even has ex-pupils who are now thugs in their mid-twenties calling her Miss, I stand there bricking it, while she tells them to get their act together!!! anything else you need just ask (although I'm away all weekend).

Re a syllabus I think if you google Key stage 3 syllabus/national curriculum you should be able to find something of use.

When I was that age my grandad taught me about what causes seasons, the earth's tilt, basic physics. I was really interested and I can remember him drawing it all on a piece of paper.
